It's really insane, for months i keep saying to myself: "ohw, let's go, you need to go now" but i don't. Now i realized, i'm just too stingy :silly: Didn't think that's possible!

WHO ELSE?

Maybe buying good scissors and cut them myself? Now my hair is at tailbone length, that's the biggest pain barrier even possible. I want them back to waist!

I'd *yes*, for sure, invest in some good scissors.

Torrinpaige did a self-trimmming video lately, and I really like the way the U-shape turned out. It's a lot like spidermom's method in fact!

With all you've saved by not going, you can buy great scissors.

Sometimes the money isn't there, and the only answers are "Cut it yourself" or "Grow it out and put it up". I chose the second one. :)

Once I started cutting my hair myself, I have never turned back! With long hair, it is very easy, and as embee mentioned, I giggle sometimes to think about how much I would have spent over just the last few years... They usually charge me extra since my hair is thick, so a normal wash & trim usually costs me $50USD plus tip! Not to mention the time hassle. Of course, I think they do a great job, but trimming at home takes me less than ten minutes...

If you are still on the fence, you could try a medium-level quality shears first. Those, you can get for ~$15 online.

I use Feye's Method (http://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com/) to get a V-shaped hemline.

I did Feye's Self-Trim (https://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com) for years before going no-trim.

The reason goes beyond saving money: self-trimming avoids potential disasters . :hatchet:

You won't have to worry about taking too much off.

I wouldn't have dreamed of cutting my own hair until TLHC. (I left the pixie maintenance to the professionals.) After it got to SL, I compact cut it once. I think Lapushka had a thread about it, and I took off just an inch or so. Then, I used Feye's at BSL, removing 1/2" every month, for 3 months. I've trimmed a lot of times since I hit hip-length. Maintained for about 8 months to thicken up the hemline, and am maintaining again at TBL.

You can totally do it. Just take off 1/2" or so, brush it out -- if you brush -- and have a look. If you like it, you can take off a little more. At your length, an inch or two won't even blip up on the radar of most people. They won't notice until after you tell them. (Mine has always come out awesome, and I could probably trim it harder, but it took forever to grow out that pixie, and I don't want to give up the hard-fought length. I can't believe I was so nervous to cut it. It isn't rocket science. Really, it's not!)

I'll go search for the thread... Yep here's the official thread on compact cuts (layering)

Thanks for finding it, Lapushka!

I skimmed back through the links and found my old posts. It looks like I compact cut 2 or 3 times. I'll share those old siggys. Maybe it will help someone here:

Here are the 3 months I trimmed -- feyes -- 1/2" each month (1 1/2" removed total) the change is very subtle, but I remember it improved my hemline.

Good scissors and a Spidermom/Feye's combo works well for me; the ponytail under your chin and a straight crea clip with the level.
Then I re-check for evenness and the U shaping with Feyes end steps.
I can't do Feye's from start to finish because my hair is so fine and wispy.

It feels amazing ~ saves money, is more convenient and secure to do it myself

I'm with you.
I cannot stand the idea of having to pay so much, especially when men's short and shaped haircuts, which are more involved than a straight across the hem trim, cost far less. My hair also never managed to grow much with going once a year and them cutting off 4-6 inches. In college I tried to cut it myself but hadn't watched any tutorials or anything and I ended up with a super deep V that cut more off than I had wanted. Oops. Then I relied on my friend who can cut a straight line to trim my hair for me. Then I joined the LHC and finally learned how to trim my hair myself. It really saves money, time, travel, and stress about whether they're going to cut off too much or not.

Hear! Hear! I took a page from (do I blame Spidermom here?) somebody's book (literally) and use a small hardcover book as my level.

Mom gets the biggest kick out of it when I come into the living room, complete with book, comb and scissors :p And it takes pretty much no time at all to trim!

I've done Feye's self trim for over ten years now. I highly recommend self-trimming! Just get a nice pair of shears and you're golden! (I didn't buy a crazy expensive pair, but not a cheap pair either and they have worked swimmingly)

Thanks for posting those pictures!!! I love the waves on you, browneyedsusan! Don't you miss them? I sure would miss them. ;) But then I love layering my hair this way; it's especially nice on TBL and longer, which is what I'm going for. :D

Lapushka, when you cut back to hip before, did you just do a compact cut? What I'm wondering is, did you just take off, say, about 6"/15cm by using your compact cut method?

Yep, a compact cut. It is cut according to that method, so when I make a ponytail on my forehead it all hangs even. So it's easy to cut a number of inches off of that. So yep, that's what happened. I urged my mom to cut more; she refused, and thank goodness or I would not have been able to bun it any longer.

I did the compact cut at collarbone length! it was years ago, when I began to cut my hair on my own, what a disaster....... I had to chop off something like 10 cm afterwards to make it look more decent!

Thanks for all your answers! browneyedsusan, this looks great! :)

I was so impatient, i chopped off my hair today. It's now at waist length again and feels fresh and nice with lot of layers. I'm not soooo super pleased with the outcome though. Maybe it's about practice? And I need good scissors. I'll order some tomorrow. This was my reference video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byjEXpYNRNk
But what REALLY feels good is: saving money!

I definitely don't promote this method for hair shorter than waist/BSL at the *very* minimum or you will have SUPER short layers.
