View Full Version : Manic Panic Advice!

Hey guys!
My hair is almost TBL and pretty darn healthy. I do enjoy coloring it though -- I got highlights last summer and let it grow out for a few months over a year, then got it dyed to match my root color (mousey dark blonde).
I was *DONE* with dying... but I'm getting an itch. That needs scratched.
My hair is fine in texture and can be wavy if I encourage it.
Wondering how long MANIC PANIC Red would last... if I were to use it.
Anyone do this before? I used to be crazy for fun colors and would often use them. Purple, green, blue, red...etc.
I've never tried it on "natural" colored hair though, was always previously lightened.
Any advice you have is welcome!
I'm getting married September 2018 and wouldn't want the red to stick around THAT long.
Thanks <3

I've only used Manic Panic once (and it was on lightened hair) and it was a fail for me. It was the lovely magenta I wanted for about 5 days, then it faded to a really odd shade of grey. Maybe on natural hair, you'll have better luck? My only concern would be it 'sticking' to the parts of your hair that were previously highlighted. Then again, nearly a year is plenty of time for you to be able to fix it, and I understand coconut oil is pretty good for lightening/getting rid of color!
Do you have enough shed hair to do a patch test?

OTOH, I'd say you're 21, and your years of "experimenting" with hair and dye are probably not over. OTOH, I would urge you to be careful, especially with bleach if you're going that route and especially because your wedding is less than a year away!!! I would not go crazy now. Instead I would focus on growth for one more year, then go crazy on your honeymoon!

Good idea about the shed hair! I was going to do a patch test and only on a bit of my hair. This is difficult!

Definitely wouldn't bleach. That stuff is evil!! Lol. That's a good idea, too. Just waiting it out then if I still want to color next fall I will.

On my silvery hair, Punky red-violet lasted about 4 months, gradually fading a little at a time. It was pastel pink at the end.

I had trouble with Manic Panic sticking in my virgin hair, but! My hair is highly porous, I only dyed the damaged ends of my hair, and I did ultimately have success removing it with clarifying shampoo when I got fed up with the weird pink highlights that were left over.
That being said, even in my hair the stickiest of the colours (Cleo Rose) was gone in six months. (Because of course I did it again).

I'm using LaRiche Directions dye (same type of dye as Manic Panic) on virgin hair, and it sticks pretty well. I ended up with an unfortunate pale blue-green shade on my underlayer after using a purple dye, and it was quite difficult to get rid off. I washed my hair every other day with Head'n Shoulders for about a month, and after that the blue-green colour was pretty much gone. That method also removed almost all the pink I had in my underlayer as well. I'd recommend strand testing to see how long it takes for the dye to fade, but I do think the dye would be gone by september 2018, especially if you wash with a harsh shampoo every now and then.

If you *really* want to go for it, and are prepared to sacrifice some length when it in the worst case scenario doesn't wash out, only color your very tippy tips.

I did purple Directions over henndigo in the summer and it lasted for about 2 weeks. Had to leave it on for 2 hours to get a decent colour to show though.

I used to only use manic panic on my natural hair and that's what I do for my boys as well. I find that it stays forEVER in my hair. It comes out of my youngest's pretty quickly ( a few weeks or a dip in a pool) and my eldest's it'll stay for months! Do a strand test :-) I'm too impatient to have ever done one myself, but it might be the ticket ;-)
