When I do my hair. Which gives it more volume and wave, like I want it (no matter what the length is). Then its flat within the first hour. Even if it were to last a little longer. The wind blowing through it makes any wave or volume go bye bye when I'm outside. (I have to walk to my job, no car right now lol). This drives me crazy, its like I work hard to get my hair where I want it then its all for nothing! Any way to avoid this? or any product to recommend? Please tell me.

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do against the elements. I remember with my hair, having blown it dry straight'ish and going to school in the morning in foggy weather. Imagine the poof! Yeah, I laugh about it now, but back then it was nothing to laugh at!
Maybe blow dry it upside down. Leave it to air dry for a few hours, then go through it with the blow drier (upside down). That *will* give you volume (and probably poof too); but against the elements anyone's hair is helpless.

To maintain volume, I'd coil my hair on top of my head and cover it with a hat or scarf - something. When I got to where I was going, I'd shake it out.

No advice here, but wind is also the bane of my (hair's) existence... I feel ya. :)

I guess hairspray with strong hold should help.

I don't like these products for my hair (cause I have volume) but as a hairdresser and a best friend to a flat head gal... I've had my share of voluminous journeys.
Matrix volume collection. Shampoo and conditioner... And root lifter, mousse, and, their hairspray.
True story: I stayed at my best friends house and FORGOT MY SHAMPOO STUFF! I was stuck using her Matrix shampoo and conditioner. She took her shower after me... So when she came back into the room where I was blow drying my hair... She started laughing at me because my hair was so huge! It was out passed my shoulders! Needless to say I never forget my own shampoo again!
They often sell their lines in cute little prepackaged gift looking sets. They're usually about $20. I worked for a long time at salons that had a money back guarantee if you didn't like the product sold to you and literally I never, ever had anyone brush that matrix volume set back.
I'm not getting paid for this recommendation hahaha

I am currently growing out a pixie, I know its not a lot of hair but its still enough to style it. I like volume in my hair and wave. I cant do anything against wind but even when I'm inside after 2 hours at most. Its just flat. It still maintains the style but none of the volume. sigh

I thought of one more thing. Chagrin Valley sells a shampoo bar called Herb Garden. It doesn't say anything in its description that would explain why, but my bestie uses it now to wash her hair with bc it gives her tons of wave and volume. She's got fine, collar bone length hair, slightly wavy.
Well being a Chagrin Valley addict... I bought it too. It did the same thing to my hair. Moreso then any other shampoo bar I've used. And I've used most of the CV line and I'm working my way through Apple Valley Naturals shampoo bar line as well.
It's a bit much for me so I sent her the other half a bar after I used it a few more times when I wanted curly hair. I do not heat style my hair right now, so it's super convenient to wash and go curls! I did use some coconut oil though as a styling product or else I'd have such huge hair it would be a bit comical.

I think it is a hair type problem. I just don't bother going for volume. I recall trying so hard in the 80s and 90s, and even with product my hair would still flatten...and then be crunchy and gross feeling too!
I currently think perfectly styled hair is really for people who never need to go outdoors. And are possibly wizards, because I can get tangles just walking two steps away from the trashcan.
