View Full Version : length & frizz & damage? &....trim?

Hello Friends!
I have a question about whether or not to cut my hair.
About a year ago, I lopped my hair from waist length up to my ears, and have been growing it out since. It's back to about bra -strap length now, but I've noticed recently my ends have seemed really 'frizzy.' My hair is wavy, but heavy, so as it gets longer it doesn't hold curl and the frizz seems REALLY noticeable.
My default assumption is that my ends are damaged and therefore just need to be chopped off. But I would lose 3-4 inches of length, and I've also been diligent about trimming & purging split ends. I've also had my hair grown longer and not had this be an issue.
What do y'all think? Is it damaged? Do I need to cut? Or maybe just condition more regularly?
Thanks for listening!

If your hair is curly or wavy, more likely, it is dry, not damaged.

Yes, try some oils treatments and deep moisturising conditioners. Or you could do a SMT.
(Snowy's Moisturising Treatment - 1 tablespoon runny honey, 1 tablespoon aloe vera clear gel, 4 tablespoons of moisturising conditioner, warm the mix slightly in the microwave, mix all well together, wash hair as usual and then put the mixture on damp hair, cover with a shower cap and a beanie, allow it to sit on there for an hour, then rinse it out, finishing with a rinse in cool water)
See if that makes a difference. I often add a half a teaspoon of olive oil to my mixture as well. I just put it from the ears down, rather than rubbing it all over the scalp, as it's the longer, drier parts of the hair I'm working on.
Good luck :)

I learned SMT as 1 part honey, 1 part aloe vera gel, and 2 parts conditioner. So to 4 tablespoons conditioner, you would use 2 tbsp honey and 2 tbsp aloe vera gel. Of course it's perfectly fine to experiment a bit with the recipe. I ended up preferring store-bought conditioning treatments.

Your hair sounds similar to mine! Mine was very dry and I thought it would be best to chop. It is thick and wavy..tangle prone etc. I just did a lot of SMT, and use deva curl daily conditioner as a leave in. When I began stretching washes and used a leave in..it really made a difference! good luck :flower:

Try using lots of moisture in your hair, so very rich conditioners (for dry, damaged hair, for instance if you want to go drugstore). Then use a leave-in on top of that and a serum (LOC/LCO method, see signature). If your hair is wavy you need to treat it differently with lots of added moisture (oil is not moisture).

I was getting the exact same thing. I used Calia Intensive Conditioner as a co wash and it took care of my ends in one use!
I too am growing my hair after a big chop and mines also wavy and usually not dry when it was longer. So we might have similar hair?

This is awesome advice, thanks y'all! I have renewed resolved to not just chop off my ends-- I'll try moisturizing. I'm looking forward to trying the SMT this weekend, it sounds perfect and super relaxing.
Thanks everyone!

You're also not alone in automatically equating frizz with damage. I tend to do the same thing. My hair is also wavy and just below BSL and has a tendency to frizz so I think "damage" but when I inspect it, I might find a split or two but nothing major or wide spread. I'm still trying to find my "perfect" routine, but one thing that help tame my frizz is jojoba oil. I just finger comb a few drops through my ends. I'm hoping to find a conditioner that actually moisturizes my hair enough that I can just wash and go, but no joy yet.
Share if you find something that works for you, I might want to try it :o

In addition to moisturizing (always a good first thing to try when ends aren't right), make sure you're protecting your ends. You're at a good length for them to start rubbing on things, which can cause some mechanical damage. Wearing hair in a gentle bun is usually easiest, but if you don't mind babysitting it more, make sure your hair is over your shoulder when you sit down and that it doesn't get caught in straps and other things.

I have the exact same problem. Try using moisturizing products like shampoos, conditioners, and oils. No, you do not need to cut. Frizzy hair does not mean that it's damaged. It just mean that it's dry. Everytime I wash my hair and let it air-dry for 5 hours, and then blow-dry for only 5 minutes I still end up with frizzy ends also but I always make sure that I moisturize my hair right after every wash.

When I diffuse my hair for 5 min. after airdrying for 2-4H and toweldrying for 30 min., I always leave my very ends dampish. I make sure to get my roots dry, but the ends remain a little dampish (90% dry). And that helps with frizzing later (they don't frizz).

I keep my ends moisturised and so I avoid breakage. It works! I am getting rid of layers and breakage taper nicely and I still have a hair growth at a slower pace with longhairedatheart's method . My hair is right at the coccyx bone, the middle distance between sacrum and hip bone.

Yes, it sounds like an excellent idea. Ok, I will. :)
