View Full Version : Help to thicken sides and back of hair? DHT removal?

Hi guys, I have noticed something with my hair and I need some advice
1. Lack of baby hairs - why I was younger, I had a ton of baby hairs around my face that would just fly about, nowadays I feel like baby hairs (at least around the front of my head, are less in number)
2. I am 19 now but my hair seems to be the same thickness as when I was 8 - surely this isn't normal?
3. I have a lot of hair on the top of my head, but a lot lot less on the sides and the back. I have close up pictures

I am concerned because my hair seems thinner than I remember, but I don't really notice it shedding a lot (since young I'd have like 2 hairs in the shower, if any. By comparison my mother always had handfuls). The only thing that I changed I'd say is that I cut my hair shorter and that I ate very unhealthily for 2 years (I'm talking one junk meal every day unhealthy), but I have since had better meals for a year. I am also iron deficient so maybe that is the reason...

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences with dense crown hair but thin/thinning sides/back
I had heard of cassia/henna, but it seems that it will affect the thickness of the existing strands?
I also researched MN, oils, and biotin, I have tried this and whilst I now have a new layer of baby hairs it didn't seem to help the rest of the hair.

I would just like advice on how to unclog any follicles - by removing DHT? or even stimulate new ones to grow, as I hate having slightly thin hair.
Thanks everyone in advance! (Also welcome to any suggestions in general to thicken hair tbh)

How often do you wash? For me at least, the less often I wash, the thinner my hair looks.

Also we can't tell if your hair is actually thinning from those pictures. With the exception of the hair color, it looks like the thickness of my hair. In order to be able to tell you would need photos several months or even a year apart.

Thickness / density *never* changes. You are born with a number of follicles and by the time you are 8 they have already reached their full potential. It's normal to have the same thickness at 19 (and thank goodness because often hormones can disrupt things for the worse).

Be happy that you do have the same thickness.

akurah is also right about the pictures. Besides you can't count follicles and thickness in pictures. I mean... hardly. For that you need to be measuring your ponytail circumference.

Also think about how you sleep. If you toss and turn, you could be causing a smidge of thinning on the back and sides just from rubbing all over your pillow. At least, I think that's a thing that happens. Like how babies often have a little bald spot on the back of their heads? My son did, from rubbing his head back and forth on the floor/his bed/his car seat/stroller etc. Most of it happened with him just looking around, but sometimes he'd just rub his head on stuff because it felt weird, presumably.

I don't know if its thinning or it's just always been like that, I'm just freaked out by how thin my hair is at the sides compared to the front...

Oh... I thought density didn't but surely as you grow your scalp expands so the area increases...? I don;t know, I could be making up bullcrap... that is reassuring at least. But i guess I just wanted to maximise the potential I have, e.g. by using oils/massaging/ other methods

Hmm maybe, I do sleep on my sides a lot. Thanks for your reply:)

I think its just that, whatever is happening, is that if I take ear to ear and split my hair, the hair in the top half is like 5 times as thick as the bottom section, which seems ...off to me D:

Those close up to the scalp photos don't show us how thick your hair is or isn't. You might want to take a normal headshot, from the front and from the back. Just a suggestion.

Your hair isn't thinning based in those shots. A significant number of people have hairlines like that. I have a hairline like that.

I am surprised you're even discussing "thinning". IMMHO thin or thinning hair looks quite different than this. This is as thick as it gets. I'm a little confused TBH.

OP, there is no need to worry!

The thing is, I think I'm just alarmed because when I was younger I had a sense part from the front to the back, and now the back looks really sparse comepared to the front. Not worried about the front at all, but the "bald patch" at the back worries me a bit. Just wondering if there were balding patterns that mainly targeted the sides/back.

I definitely think I could correct the back though, I'll give castor oil a try

I don't see anything that looks like a bald patch? I think maybe you're being too hard on yourself here

Yes, trust me. I have had bald patches when I was 13/14 (patches with NO hair) due to hormonal changes. You do not seem to have those at all. I think you are worrying just a tad bit much, if I'm allowed to say that. :flower:

Don't stress out over your hair so much, that's even worse.

Your hair looks perfectly thick and normal. Stop worrying.

Looks pretty normal to me too, I think my hairline is similar to that at the front. I have been using caffeine shampoo to see if it made any difference to that and honestly it made zero difference. It is what it is, it's just that shape. It definitely look worse on less than fresh hair. Try not to worry :)
