Hello everyone, I've been a quiet reader for quite some time now, but have yet to post. I had a quick question for those of you who have dealt with hair loss. I'm currently struggling with losing considerable amounts of hair daily due to a period of stress a few months ago. I used to have pretty thick and strong hair, but now I'm finding that I've lost about half the thickness I used to have. I've heard about Nioxin and was considering using that, but then I saw several review posts about Nizoral. My roommate is using it, and she swears by it, but she has a drastically different hair type than me (4a/c). I was wondering if any of you had experience with Nizoral, and if it helped with hair loss. Thanks in advance!

We have a thread on hairloss somewhere around here. Nizoral is a treatment for hairloss.

Nioxin is not a hair regrowth product. It will not help you regrow your lost hair. http://www.livestrong.com/article/18224-nioxin-shampoo-make-hair-grow/

Nizoral 2% is prescription only in the US, so you might be better to consult with a doctor first. You can only get Nizoral 1% OTC in the US.

In Belgium we can only get the 2% as that is the only thing on the market and it is OTC at our pharmacies.

I use Nizoral for its intended use, which is seborrheic dermatitis. I have not yet before heard it can help with hair loss from stress. It can help with hair loss from fungal overgrowth due to SD, but IDK about "regular" hair loss.

^ There is a bit of research on ketoconazole (in Nizoral and other products) being effective not only for Seborrheic Dermatitis, but also for slowing down effects of Androgenetic Alopecia (male/female pattern baldness). Ketoconazole-based shampoos have long been used in standard protocol for AGA control (together with minoxidil and finasteride, for example). It's not totally clear why this occurs, possibly because it reduces sebum which can be a problem for people with AGA? It was even shown to increase diameter of hair strands, but it was used very frequently in these studies.

Here are a few relevant studies:
