View Full Version : Experience with interlocking combs anyone!?

Hi all. I've just figured out that if I wind my hair back and forth in a ladder-like configuration and then secure it on both sides with french twist combs I get a puffy, messy bun. This is a major discovery for me since my hair is fine and thin and compresses easily and most of my buns end up being super sleek and walnut sized. I'm all excited at this point and am thinking maybe I should invest in interlocking combs since they were probably made for this purpose. The French twist combs have a little longer teeth than I'd like which makes them heavier in my thin hair and they don't exactly fit together well. I've looked at the France Luxe site and they have a variety of interlocking combs. They look like they fit together in an almost scissor-like manner which makes me a little concerned that they could be damaging.

Has anybody used these?

Oh, and here's what the "do" looks like; this is way bigger and messier than my usual bun (and yeah, I went back and fixed that dangling piece but was too lazy to update the pic):

Have you looked into banana clips? Same principle applies to them.

I have one and it kind of works BUT I can't really manipulate it it the do the way I can unconnected combs. Pins work too but they don't puff it up as much as combs. The combs really seem to do magic.

Never seen these, but I can't see why they would be damaging. If the hair is too compacted, surely the teeth just wouldn't go in. Not that with my thin hair I have any such experience.

BTW, please explain how you laddered your hair. I like the look of that bun!

I did it again today. This has been in all day so it's really messy. It's a little blurry 'cause of the flash but you can kind of see how the hair goes back and forth. You can also pull the loops to puff it up. I'm kind of excited because it makes a non-damaging messy bun that holds. Basically I start like I was making a high cinnabun. But instead of coiling it around- I zigzag it back and forth with every zig and zag directly beneath the previous one. Then I use french combs on each side to catch the edges of the zigs and zags where they switch back. The finished bun looks really complicated but it's as easy as a cinnabun to make. Just keep doing a tight Z pattern with the hair until you get to the end. I really want to ask for a custom of these combs (https://www.etsy.com/listing/232280639/gothic-steampunk-black-banana-meshing?show_sold_out_detail=1) but I'm gonna get some really inexpensive interlocking combs first to make sure they work before I invest.

I can see I will try this. Let us know how you fare, please!

Okay, here's an update Cg. I got these combs (https://www.etsy.com/listing/538068236/3-sets-interlocking-banana-combs-hair) from Etsy because they were the cheapest I could find to just try out. Two words....Epic Fail. Primarily because they are gi-normous! They are 6 inches long (not counting the curve) and 4 inches across when they are completely together. Way bigger than even two typical French Twist combs. Personally, I think they are too big for ANYBODY'S hair. Not to mention they're kind of ugly. I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and get some more normal combs from France Luxe. I'll let you know how they work out when I get them.

In the meantime, this also works with mini-maxes. I still like the combs best though.

I tried this with French twist combs but managed to push one side out while pushing the other one in. Or one side worked and the other slid out on its own. Mrs Fumblefingers strikes again. I think it doesn't help to have very slippery hair. (Sounds like a viable excuse to me....)

I have only France Luxe French twist combs. Perhaps those with thinner teeth would work better.

I tend to hold the whole thing under the palm of one hand as I make it so it doesn't escape. And I stack the combs over-top of each other when I slide them in rather than trying to lock them. I have one of those France Luxe French combs and, you are right, the teeth are too big to work well for this. It absolutely works best with the combs that are lighter and have the thinner teeth. I have two of these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Caravan-French-Twist-Comb-Tortoise-Shell/172708381835?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649).
