View Full Version : What's your favourite cheap brand of hair products?

My favourite brand so far is Aussie, which is middle range priced IMO. I can get a bottle of shampoo or conditioner for ~100 SEK/~12 USD/~ 10 EUR at the grocery store. The L'Oréal Elvive masks are ok too, ~75 SEK/~ 9 USD/~ 8 EUR, but their conditioners aren't enough for me. I've just never found a cheaper option that is moisturising enough, but I use Coop Xtra conditioner (12 SEK/~ 1.5 USD/~ 1 EUR) for pre-poo or cleansing CO. I've heard both really good things and really bad things about Pantene, though I need to head out to the Maxi supermarket to get it, so I haven't gotten around to it yet. It's about 30 SEK/~ 3.50 USD/~ 3 EUR around here, so it would be great if it worked out for me. Dove is another brand in the same price range I want to try.
What's your favourite cheap brand? What's it like? Is it moisturising? Heavy or light? Silicones and sulphates or silicone- and sulphate-free?

Cheap, I wouldn't call it. 2 to 3 euro for a 200ml conditioner is a *lot* in my book. That is about what my HE Hello Hydration is. It's cheaper in our local discount store (Action)... if they have it, which is not always.
I love the Cien/Lidl range of products (0.79€ct for 500 ml of my favorite shampoo) and the Kyrell/Aldi range of products. I wouldn't call them "cheap", though. They are not expensive but I haven't had a quality fail in these ranges *ever*.

I use Sainsburys own brand for most things: shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, skin care etc. It's cheap and cruelty free. Shampoo & conditioner is 75p per bottle, most brands in Sainsburys start at £3 per bottle. I used to buy Brilliant Brunette when it was £5 per bottle and now it's £6-7  My hair isn't any worse off for spending less.

I like Suave a lot. Their shampoos are too harsh for my usual cleansing, but I do like it for clarifying. And I really like their conditioners for CO washing, and I'm also experimenting with using them as my regular conditioner now that my hair doesn't have any heat or dye damage left. I especially like the price, you get 30 oz or about 887 ml for about 2 dollars. :)

Ebelin for hair toys and balea or Alverde for shampoo, conditioner, hair mask and leave-in conditioner. I will also try moroccan argan oil one day who knows (damn expensive the argan oil).

I love my Renpure Originals Argan conditioner. It's $8 for a 32 ounce pump bottle at Wal-greens, which with that Wal-green's inflation, it's probably retail suggested at $5. Ahahaha.

Well, everything is relative. Around where I live, the cheapest conditioners go for an equivalent of 3 EUR per 250 ml or 5 EUR per 500 ml, except the one super-duper cheap conditioner that goes for 1 EUR per 500 ml - but that one is pretty crap and I can only use it as a cleanser. Has tonnes of perfumes and alcohol denat. You could probably get a bit cheaper ones if you head out to the discount store, but that would either take me 45 min by foot, 25 min by bike, or 3 EUR by bus, so for me the point of getting a shampoo or conditioner cheaper out there is kind of... cancelled out.

I tend to like cheaper, mainstream brands under umbrella companies with huge R&D budgets - L'Oreal (Garnier Fructis) and PG (Pantene and Herbal Essences). As long as they have enough silicones (which they usually do), I never run into problems with their conditioners.
(I think I might have some emotional attachment to Garnier Fructis, because I used that brand almost exclusively as a kid and my hair was in its best condition and totally hassle-free at the time.)

Tresseme is my favorite for my general stuff, and it's like $5 US for a 32oz (I think that's the size?) bottle of shampoo or conditioner. I really loved Dove's nourishing oil care shampoo and conditioner, but it was a bit more expensive (like $7 US for a 375ml bottle) and I'm pretty sure it's no longer sold in the US? And my favorite deep treatment is pretty cheap, too. L'Oreal Nature's Therapy Mega Moisture is $12 US for 16oz. Since I don't do deep treatments often (I think I could use one, right now, every 6-8 washes or once every other month), it lasts me ages.
The only expensive thing I use right now is the oil I put in my hair, actually!

I'm thinking of hunting down the cheapest coney-rich conditioner I can find and mix it with a tiny bit of aloe vera gel before applying for humectancy... I think I get enough proteins even without them in my shampoo/conditioner combo.
Garnier Fructis was never good for me unfortunately :( But another vote for Pantene is making me even more curious about it! :)
I tried Tresemme's Botanique when I CO'd, and it was the best silicone free one I tried, but in the end I realised cone-free isn't for me. Makes me think maybe I should try their coney conditioners after all!

Hask and Liveclean. Most products are 5$ and under. Some contain silicones - like the hask products i use, though the silicone serums i no longer use as much, maybe once a month now if i remember to use them. The deep treatments they have do not.
Live clean is all silicone free. I think the shampoos are also sulphate free, they are CF and eco friendly as well.

I love their "moisture rich" or whatever it is formula the most. Coney conditioner, and the shampoo has... SLES? I think. It has just one of them, and I have a bottle of Pantene moisture something that has both SLS and SLES that I use for clarifying  One or the other is fine for my hair for regular washing, but if I get buildup then having both gets it right out.
But it's cheap here, for a huge bottle, to get Tresemme. Which is why I tend to use it so much! Smells nice, and they have a formula my hair likes, so there's little reason to stray unless I'm feeling "fancy" lol.

Scandinavia is more expensive, so what we deem cheap won't be seem as cheap by others. 3 euro for a 250ml bottle IS cheap here.
My hair needs sulphates and silicones, so that's what I go for.
I really liked Garnier Nutrisse, but unfortunatley it doesn't seem like other people do, because they've started disappearing out of the stores :( The only ones I can find often now has the clear shampoos, which my hair doesn't like, it needs the creamier ones. Another brand that's cheap that I like is Schwarzkopf Gliss, H&M often has them on sale for 19.90NOK/about 2 euro. In general I try to shop around, the clothing stores like H&M, Lindex and Cubus often has sale on at least one brand of haircare at all times. Åhlens also can have a very good stock in Sweden (they've closed all their stores here :( ). I don't remember if you have Nille or Europris in Sweden, they often can have deals on brands like Redken and Tigi and Loreal Professional.

0.79 eurocents for a 500 ml bottle of shampoo at Lidl, you can't beat that price. And their blue conditioner is nice and can practically replace my HE Hello Hydration (it is just a tad less moisturizing, but just a tad) and it's about 1 euro less in price.

I love Alberto VO5 shampoo and conditioner for fullness and thickness, and it is the cheapest. I also love how it smells too. It also gets my hair squeaky clean! And, the conditioner is just great! It really softens up my hair. I also love that it has callogen in it too. Pantene is also another one of my favorite cheap products too.

I thought I'd do a quick update since the thread was revived: my current fave conditioner is Garnier Respons (Whole Blends/Ultimate Blends etc.) Honey Treasures :) I think it retails at about 8€ per litre (or 3.5€ per 400 ml bottle/family size) at the discount store. I also recently got their Maple deep treatment, but haven't had a chance to test it out yet. I got the ICA deep treatment awhile ago, which was more like a coney conditioner than a deep treatment TBH. It's good for a first C in CWC or as a shaving cream... LOL
Do you have an Aldi? They do good bargains as well. And they have awesome shampoo & conditioner.
Speaking of, I really enjoyed the thread on Aldi/Lidl shops around the world! My main take-away was that I think we have a slightly higher price point for Lidl shampoos and conditioners compared to most countries (hello pricey countries!!), though I do enjoy their shampoos and try to stock up whenever I happen to go to Lidl (which is far away and a big hassle for me to do). As for conditioners, I can get similar for an equal price closer to home so I usually don't bother with them. Their keratin treatment was not for me - I've found regular conditioners with more keratin that that. And unfortunately, we don't have Aldi at all!

2.19 for a Lidl conditioner is a lot, I find. They last did a buy 1 get the second one free, and I bought 2. More would have been ridiculous with my stash. :o

Garnier and L'Oreal and Pantene and such all cost slightly under 3e here, but they are not considered "cheap", it's rather like "better drugstore option". I'm extremely dissapointed by Garnier costing almost 3e! It's not that good! :D At least not all of it.
L'Oreal and Pantene conditioners can be bought in bigger backages (400ml) and they are usually on sale if you are in a country where people don't use conditioner. We also have Syoss which makes big 400ml bottles only and those are pretty cheap but also not very good imo.
Then the dm-only brands such as Balea. The conditioners in white bottles are a bit cheaper, less than 2e for 300ml and the ones in the squeezy tubes are around 2e for 200ml which is quite expensive given they are cone free and tend to have less slip. Plus I don't know what they use for perfume, but all of them smell weird :D
One super cheap and good option is Kallos if you can get it. 1000ml of conditoner for 2,50e. But given that all of their products have nearly the same ingredient list which is pretty basic, you'll probably find that you need to use a different product occasionally. At least I did, after around 2 months of using Kallos pretty much everytime I washed.

That's a bummer... :( I guess not all Aldi's are the same over the world. We have had an Aldi here since I was about 14/15, so that's 30 years or so of faithful shopping there? So yeah, maybe that's the difference, the length of time they've been there?

I've got mixes of all sorts of things. Dove, Pantene, Garnier Fructis, Garnier Ultra Doux (whole blends), Herbal Essences, Nivea, and the Aldi own brands, the Lidl own brands. I suppose the 2 latter ones are the cheapest out there, but not necessarily. I once "scored" a whole box of Dove conditioner for 99€ct each, and that makes it cheaper even than Lidl conditioners (at €2.19). I also have the brand Hegron (from Action discount store, their own brand) and that counts as cheap too.

I have used V05 for a long time. It works well and you can't beat the price. I used to get it for 80 cents at Rite Aid, but they stopped selling that size. I can still find it at the dollar store, though. I just bought some Herbal Essence Hello Hydration since I read about it here. I really like it a lot. My son has been using L"Oreal Extraordinary Clay and really likes it. His hair does look nicer when he uses it. He had long hair when he was in school, but now he has cut it for job hunting and it worked well with both lengths.

Aussie probably. 3MM and Aussie Moist are the only two products that make a huge difference on my hair I've tried.
You know what, me too! The shampoo and conditioner combined are wonderful, and the 3MM even on its own is great. Unfortunately, I got sick and couldn't work, so I couldn't really justify using it anymore. I did some price comparisons with Garnier Respons (Whole Blends/Ultimate Blends/etc.) since the shampoo and conditioners tend to work almost as well for me - but I'm not sure about the mask yet.
Aussie Moist: 276 Kr/L
3MM: 396 Kr/L
Respons: 75 Kr/L
Respons hair masks: 120 Kr/L
I dunno if y'all know anything about metric conversions (or Swedish currency for that matter!) but I guess that's not really my point. Rather, my point is that the Aussie products are ridiculously priced in comparison, and I think you can see that even if you're unfamiliar with the price units. I've recently started working again, but I'm not sure I'll go back to Aussie simply because... because. I guess it's the principle of the thing.

Where I am in America, Aussie moist is 5$ for nearly 30 oz and 3 MM is 3$ for 1, or 5$ for 2. Whole blends is 3.47$ for only 12 oz for the regular conditioner, 5.47 for the masks. As you can see Aussie is cheaper, That's weird it's more there. I've always considered Aussie to be cheap.

Isn't it a product common to the US, that would make it an import from overseas, and therefore more expensive for us. Could be as simple as that.

Wow! What a price difference. Aussie is considered a very very cheap, drugstore brand here. So I'm suprised.
I found 3 24oz bottles at tjmaxx of my live clean argan oil conditionder. They are 8.99 each. The smaller bottles are 6$ each so I felt the price difference was justified. Because the smaller bottles are about 12oz , so I'm getting double the conditioner and saving 3$ since I'm not stuck buying 2.

On the bottle it says made in the USA from locally sourced ingredients(Which is hilarious since it advertises being Australian!) so it probably is from import costs that hikes the price up.

Hah, I never thought to check, I just assumed it was Australian because... yeah. (There's even a kangaroo on the bottle, darn it!!!) This has been such a fun thread to read! Does anyone else choose hair or body was based primarily on smell alone? Well, if you see some weird person standing in the shampoo isle just sniffing all the products until they find one they like... yep, that was probably me! When I was using cones, I fell in love with White Rain Coconut and Hibiscus Shampoo and Conditioner. (They have it in a body wash, too I saw. Yay!) I fell in love with the smell alone. Man, they need to make this into a body spray, stat! Now, I'm using the shampoo, along with VO5 Vanilla Mint (smells so good) along with Suave Coconut. So, yeah I smell like a cookie and I'm proud of that. My hair is loving this so far, too and the price is awesome.

I really miss living near the DM drugstore (in some countries in Europe). I really like their Balea line - so cheap and there is so much to chose from. Also plenty of silicone free options. My favorites were Glossy Blond shampoo and Argan oil conditioner. And if I needed something not super packed with protein, there is Alverde in the next aisle :)
Last time I visited my home country I came back with half of my suitcase filled with beauty products from there, since it is so super cheap compared to Scandinavia's prices.

Sally’s Generic Value Products are great. I’ve got a number I like, although my hands down favorite is their version of Sebastian Potion 9 leave-in. That stuff is the perfect weight to detangle easily and calm any frizz I’ve got, plus it smells amazing.
I’m experimenting right now simply because I wanted to try out a few detanglers and salves I’ve read so much about. Even at the higher price point, they can’t touch the results I get with my GVP Sebastian Potion 9.

Fructis or Whole Blends (Loving Blends, Ultimate Blends, Ultra Doux, etc.)? Because the latter is definitely not "cheap", costing around 3/4 euro a bottle here, for a 200/250ml bottle.

V05 stuff. Mainly conditioner and shampoo.
I like the sulfate free line they have. Where I live it’s 79 cents for shampoo, and 99 cents for conditioner. Pretty good steal.

Pantene conditioners works well with me. My hair do better with cony conditioners.
Tressemme was good too until they started manufacturing it locally. The new formula does not work with my curly hair and it gave me dandruff.
Unfortunately also locally manufactured HE is no good for anything.
VO5 and dove are good for co washing too.
And where I live oils are not expensive at all and abundant.

Since the English-speaking community online is (arguably) predominantly American I keep seeing posts about all these affordable US brands like Trader Joe's, Mane n' Tail, etc. But they're really not affordable over here with all the shipping and import taxes on top, so I guess I'll have to go without  You can actually find Pantene in some local shops these days, but they're still a bit more expensive than in the US. Same with Garnier, but their products are more common around here. Honestly, Sweden's a fairly expensive country, so "cheap" brands over here are usually more expensive that everywhere else. Sigh.
Currently I'm sticking to Cien shampoo and Garnier Respons (= Whole Blends, etc. etc.) Honey Treasures conditioner.

For US products, I like Herbal Essences (Smooth/ Shine collections; Body Envy). Pantene was another one, up until they changed the scent.
Also I shop at International markets, and have found that I really like some shampoos that are imports from Poland (Ewa, Farmona). If I buy them in the stores and not online, they are under $5, so not sure how much they are for you guys who live over in the EU:

Maybe we need a Europe only- thread or at least some kind of a product listing. :D Hair toys are also hard to find, it's rare to see a local store selling sticks or forks. Or how about cheap silicone and sulphate free styling products for curly hair? There's no such thing.
I've been trying some new products. Tresemme botanique nourish & replenish conditioner is amazingly good, very cheap too and no silicones. It also works as a leave-in. My new must have-conditioner. Now I just need to find the perfect shampoo. Urtekram is ok, sometimes it makes my hair squeaky and unmanageable but mixing some Tresemme in it solves the problem. I just wouldn't want to waste my conditioner.
Btw, cocopanda.se sells Mane n' Tail and if I understood correctly, shipping to Sweden is free. I might be wrong, my Swedish is bad.

You're right! However, compared to the US prices I think they're quite a bit more expensive over here. In the US it's ~ 6USD = 5.30EUR while they're sold at cocopanda for 84SEK = 8EUR. Garnier Respons, another US drugstore brand, is a lot cheaper per litre over here, for example.

I think what's "cheap" is relative to how big your budget is, what needs you have, and honestly what the economy is like wherever you are. Sweden IS an expensive country for example, and Lidl does sell their conditioners for around an equivalent of 2EUR a bottle. If I remember correctly you said previously that they're a lot cheaper than that in Belgium? Cien conditioners also don't work nearly as well for me as SOME of the cheaper drugstore products that retail around 4EUR. Since 4EUR is within my budget, using a product that work for 4EUR rather than a product that doesn't work for 2EUR is a lot more worthwhile for me.
I do like the Cien shampoo and the Cien argan body lotion. But my hair is extremely picky when it comes to conditioner. I've only ever found one or two "cheaper" conditioners that work for me, honestly. Garnier Respons Honey Treasures and Dove something-oil.

I find some of Live Clean shampoo and conditioners in local Dollarama at 4 bucks a piece.
That's 2 bucks cheaper than at local Walmart.
In US I see it at 5 bucks each plus BOGO offer ,only then I buy .
They are excellent quality for the price.
Tresemme products on sale are for 4 bucks for 739 ml on sale .Huge bottle and good quality.

Schwartzkopf Gliss. They are pretty much identical to the salon products Schwartzkopf makes, but a lot cheaper. Many of them have some keratin or other protein in them. They used to make a good silicone free but protein rich conditioner, but sadly it’s discontinued. I use their shampoo & conditioner for colour treated hair at the moment.

Probably Garnier, but I wouldn't consider Garnier and other general market brands "cheap", because nothing here is cheap unless you buy some suspicious crap that has surfaced on the shelves in the recent years, but the ingredients of those products are generally very poor. I saw one where "argan oil" was all over the front label but it was, in fact, the very last ingredient.
When it comes to actually cheap stuff, I quite like Superdrug's own brand products, but again, they aren't available to me locally so I have to order them from abroad, so they end up being a little less cheap, but still cheap.
Small Aussie bottles (200 or 250 ml) cost like 8 or more euros here, I definitely don't consider that a cheap brand. Goes in the mid-range category for me. :D

Ha ha ha, OGX is a really expensive brand in Sweden, and not that easy to find. If you can get a shampoo or conditioner for 100 SEK/ bottle, then there's a discount. I tried theirs sea mineral something for a couple of year ago, and my hair dresser told me to change shampoo & conditioner immediately (she didn't know what I was using, only that it had ruined my hair, she was really shocked). Alaffia is pretty cheap for the quality ingredients as well. I can get a big bottle of shampoo or conditioner for about $10 at Sprouts. I like the Everyday Coconut line.

What's your favourite cheap brand? What's it like? Is it moisturising? Heavy or light? Silicones and sulphates or silicone- and sulphate-free?
Right now, my favorites are the Herbal Essences Chamomile Shine Collection Conditioner and either Suave Essentials or Vo5 shampoos. The shampoos are pretty heavy-duty sulfate cleansers and the conditioner is very light, which are both perfect for my straight, fine hair. I can even use this conditioner on my roots without it flattening my hair out. And the shampoos keep the cones clarified out, so no build-up. :)

I can't believe how excellent combing spray I found from drugstore, really a miracle liquid! plus that I've been using it a few years ago but I've forgotten it totally, and now I need this kind of product more than ever because my hair is longer than ever before. Although I make my own products, in the summer I do buy some products to take to the beach or travel. The brands that I know and like for leave-in masks or cheap detanglers are Yves Rocher, which I find to be quite acceptable quality, Lovea is worse but Monoi's styling cream is great, I have bought Carrefour hair masks in the past and I still have Garnier fructis one, but I have already decided not to buy brands that support genocides in any way.

I’ve just looked up Garnier. It seems that 500 care packages of Garnier intimate care products were delivered to female Israeli soldiers in 2014. According to the source I read, this was an initiative by a local retailer and Garnier itself did not approve and wanted no further link with the campaign.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/israelgaza-conflict-garnier-apologises-after-girly-care-packages-sent-to-female-idf-soldiers-sparks-threats-to-boycott-company-9658876.html
I don’t know if there is more recent news about them.
From a different angle, Garnier are now listed as cruelty free as far as animal testing goes. I still don’t use them, as I have avoided them for so long I tend to forget they exist. Their parent company is L’Oreal and that is enough reason for some people not to use them. Personally I tend to focus on the company rather than the parent company, but we all have different feelings about these things.
