View Full Version : Shower Heads: What style do you like?

Bit of a funny topic I suppose, and I'm not sure if it's been brought up before, but what heck! :D
I started thinking about this while we were on holiday and staying at various BnB. What type of shower head do you prefer? Back in the States, we had a shower head that sat on the end of a flexible neck, so I could adjust both the height and position of it as I liked. I could get it right over my head, close in, or higher up. I loved it! And I can't wait to go back to it when we move. Currently I have a detachable type that sits attached to a pole on the shower wall. I can adjust the height and angle of the sprayer on the wall, which is nice and works pretty well. And then obviously I can use it hand-held if desired, though I rarely do so, since washing hair one-handed annoys me.
What type of shower head do you use or prefer?

I really like the extra large ones that come straight down like rain. We actually have a combo head, it has both the rain type and a regular on a hose type. I generally use the regular head because we have low water pressure and the larger head doesn't work that great.
The hose helps when bathing the dogs too, easiers then dumping water on them with a cup.

I like the handheld kind that sits on a neck and can be removed for scalp blasting. I like to remove it and hold it against my length for fast rinsing, too, similar to the motions you do to flat iron your hair.

My big thing is to have a handheld one, on a longer (6 feet, typically) hose. Especially necessary in my current house, where a shower head attached directly to the pipe in the wall would be approximately level with my nose! The handheld one gets it up a few more inches so it's over my head, and if my taller hubby were unhappy, we could place a mount on the wall so it would be higher still.
The long hose is for utility purposes. It makes it easier to clean the tub or anything that I need to rinse out in it. Over the years, that's been everything from screens for screenprinting to housecats. The more common 4 foot hoses just don't have the reach for it.

Handheld ones are the best for me in my opinion - just because you can direct it where it's needed and this tends to become a bigger issue with growing length. I really wish my current one was handheld, because rinsing out some hair mask or doing a cold water rinse or an acidic rinse without it touching skin or getting into eyes is so easy with handheld showerheads. They also make all Scalp-Only washes a breeze and allow you to wash your hair without getting the rest of your body wet, if need be.
As for water pressure, I really love very high pressure... but I do have doubts - maybe it hits canopy hair a bit too much? :hmm:

Like a lot of the others, I really like the ones on the hose so I can rinse directly on and all around my scalp (and body). I specifically look for one with multiple settings that has a high-pressure stream sort of thing so I can get my hair very thoroughly rinsed easily.

I definitely appreciate having good water pressure. Makes rinsing a lot easier! :) I can accept lower water pressure if a filter is needed, otherwise low water pressure is a pain.
I always liked the idea of those rainforest shower heads, but I can't imagine they would make washing hair easy unless the pressure is good. I suppose you'd just have to take a bit longer to rinse thoroughly?

I didn't grow up with a handheld, but once I got used to it I don't know how I managed without it! (I had a similar experience with switching from an electric stovetop to gas flame.) I don't think I could do a good scalp wash without a hand held. I do like to have a wall-mount bracket for it though, so that I can have both hands free sometimes and give my arm a break. As far as type of droplets and pressure, I like medium to high water pressure, but fatter droplets. The showerheads that send out tiny droplets at high pressure sting like pellets on my skin. However, that's still preferable to me than fat droplets but low water pressure so that I never know if I've rinsed out all my shampoo.
Sometimes I daydream about getting one of those giant paddle shaped showerheads so that it's like you're standing in heavy rain. That seems like it'd be fun.

Definitely a detachable one. I think that's the only kind we have in Sweden. Get all wet under it while attached. Then I shut it off and schampoo my hair. Then I hold it in my hand when rinsing. It's perfect and you can direct it so you don't get shampoo/conditioner in your eyes.
Also, it's uhm easier to wash "all over" your body if it's handheld. :p
Same routin with body as with hair. I get wet, shut of the water, soap up my body, then hold the shower head in hand for rinsing. Much more effective than if it was attached IMHO.

I have T3 filtered shower heads - both the old bell style and the current with a wand. We have really hard water in Southwestern Ontario and we found this helpful. It has multiple settings. It's quite easy to install and change the filters and the filter medium is compostable and the container recyclable. We've had the original for about 4 years. The only pain is we can't purchase the filters (change q6months) at Sephora anymore for the bell style so we need to go to Amazon. Sephora still carries the wand filters.

I like the detachable ones a lot, but we currently have one of those big ones that feels like rain and I love it. I only think about replacing it when I'm scrubbing the shower and want the detachable head to rinse off the walls.

I have 2 shower heads. they're both the same with adjustable streams, although I always leave it on the one that comes out equally at all points like rain I guess. One is attached to the wall and the other one is removable, but I don't use it because I'm too short to reach it :( they can work one at a time but I use them both at once because it's faster  but, I've gotten so used to having 2 that if I use someone else's shower or a shower in a hotel it makes the water pressure feel really low and it takes me forever
