View Full Version : No-trimming 2018! First half only!

For this challenge, you need to trim at the latest January 1st 2018.
Challenge ends on June 30th 2018.
No other trims are allowed during this half of the year for you to be part of this challenge.
If you want to no-trim for shorter periods of time during the year, then the "no-trimming club" is a better place for you:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=132
Welcome, and "happy growing"!
Here's some easy guidelines for you:
You may maintain bangs. (or undercut / face framing layers)
You may not cut them in.
You may S&D
You may not trim.
If you are wanting to trim, please do so from:
January 1st through to January 5th!

Lol I already responded to no trims in 2018 as I didn't see this one, but this challenge (if any) would be the one for me!
I'll keep an eye on this thread (and my ends to see if they can handle it), thanks for starting this lapushka :flowers:

I dropped out No trimming 2017, and didn't join the 2nd half of thread, even though I'm not planning on trimming for the rest of the year (my last trim was on 4th of July, too late to join properly :)). I thought I would trim away dye in 2017, but so it happened that I did bigger (not micro) trims which made my hemline kinda lopsided  and I had to even it up while wet, so I took off a lot more. Now I'm really fed up with cutting my hair by myself, so this is good motivation to gain length :D

I'll probably join this challenge after a trim in between the ongoing challenge and this.
Am I the only one who thinks that it would be fun to trim your hair right after 00.00 new years eve? I definitely won't do it, but still it feels like a fun thing to start of the new year with :p

I'll join this challenge, too! I just hit shoulder length and the bottom layer of my hair appears much longer than the top layer, so it looks like I've got a mullet going on back there. In the past, I'd grab scissors to even it out, but I've been so inspired seeing long hair here that I've decided against it ... and this upcoming challenge will keep me honest! ;-)
Thanks for having me - good luck, all!

I am considering this challenge. I would love to do the full year, but I have some damage. If I trim before this challenge I may be able to complete it. I will see how it looks after my next trim.

I think this is a great compromise for me! I don’t think I can go a full year without trimming some of my damaged ends off, but hopefully 6 months should give me a nice head start on some length. I’m in!

I think I'll join aswell. I really want to make it to waist and then maintain there till all my layers are gone and my hair will look better. The other option is trimming each or every other month on my way to waist but I think I'm going to obsess about it to much. I wear it up all the time anyway and I want more length. But I probably should do a bigger trim at the end of my other challenge I am in now.
Is this normal? ^ Do you guys think about stuff like this?

Yes :) I'm having the same debate, do I chop 2/3" to get rid of my layers and then join this challenge, or microtrim instead, maintaining at BSL? I have until the end of the year to decide.

Glad I'm not alone. Ca't seem to make up my mind about this. But what I like about this challenge is I just let it grow and don't have the 'should I or shouldn't I cut' debate going on in my head. Oh the peace that it brings. :o
Hope I can get away with a 1cm trim then on januari first, hope it's enough.

I know what you mean! I've decided to leave the possible trim till the end of the year as I'm waiting on a new pair of shears, and it's nice to know I don't actually have the shears to cut it until then - no debate!

Joining! I am still deciding if I want to go all of 2018 without a trim though. I'll definitely be going until the end of June without any trims. If I do that then I will be able to get hopefully around 4 inches of growth, which should bring my hair close to BSL. I don't actually know my length right now as I got a big cut back in august (regret) and haven't been able to measure it since then as I don't have a tape measurer. Hopefully I'll be able to reach BSL by the middle of 2018. So excited for this challenge!

Ok, made up my mind! I'm in! Will not trim when the other challenge ends either, I always wear it up anyway. If all goes well I will make it to my goallength of 33 inches, which is waistlength on me, by july 2018. After that I will maintain/ microtrim and grow out my layers and U-hem to a straight blunt hemline. The plan is there, now I need patience. But honestly it's fine. I've got a routine I like and I've got some comfortable styles I love and a lot of pretty hairtoys to play with!:p And, I hope I can actually do buns next year when I reach my goal length, so cool!! :cheer:
ETA: Thinking about cutting in bangs though at the end of the 2017 second half challenge...hmmm

I may try this again. I failed the no-trimming second half of 2017. But my hair is doing well now so maybe. Only thing I can think of that might make me want to trim is my graduation in the middle of June. Hopefully I am APL by then and can do something like a fun updo.

Thanks Lapushka!:smooch: I probably won't go with the bangs. My younger sister has them and she looks so cute and pretty with them but they are high maintenance and will probably drive me nuts. Plus her hair is a really different texture than mine and mine probably look horrible. Maybe I should go for some face framing pieces instead. ProbablyThe layers I had are al longer than APL now in the front.

I second this. I feel like my hair has grown quite a bit in the summer through fall section of the year (4ish inches if my measuring can be trusted). But it has slowed down significantly as soon at the temperature when below 10 Celsius. I am going to take a picture on Jan 1 for this challenge so I can compare it with one at the end. Hopefully by Jan 1, by hair is long enough (bangs and all) to fit into a pony or braid so that I can practice some neglect on it and it will be an awesome moment come June 30 to take it all down.
Good luck to us both! I hope your hair grows fabulously!

I'm going to join this thread. I think going the whole year would be too long, because I'm just barely grazing chin with my longest layers, but I could easily see trimming next week sometime and going until the end of June, trimming then and going the rest of the year. I've got bleach and green on my ends, so I might change my mind partway through and just chop, but I want to see how far I can grow in a year. A year's growth should put me past shoulder with my longest layers. I'll have to just keep thinking about that, because I'm really annoyed with my hair right now and missing my buzz more than I'm missing my braids. I think that will change once I get to braiding length.
Dye is allowed, right? Because I have green over my bleach and I'll probably want to change colors or touch that up before June.

Yep dye is totally allowed; no restrictions on that whatsoever. Bleach, henna, indigo, regular dye, permanent, semi, demi, colorful veggie dyes, all allowed. :D
S&D is allowed. Maintaining your bangs is allowed, just not cutting them in (because that is a major hemline change and is in essence cutting a lot of length off, so huge chop). At least, that's my reasoning. :)

Now all I have to do is stay away from the wild colour changes I normally go in for, which has been the cause of so much loss of length over the years.
What a great idea to do a six-monther. :cheese:

Yeah, IDK, it suddenly came to me to do it here, due to someone doing it on another board (that has since gone off the air for good). I can't remember for the life of me who it was, but my thanks go to whoever that was!

I'm in! :) I had a cut (about one inch) last week and it resulted in my hair being somewhere above upper BSL. I'm struggling with false terminal and looots of white dots and breakage so I will probably get sharper scissors and S&D every now and then (knowing myself, probably every single day, I'm obsessed...) but apart from that, I'm planning to practice some benign neglect. Oh and I might maintain bangs, too! I haven't decided yet.

Just make sure you decide before the challenge begins, because you can't let them grow out for months on end, and then cut them back in. Maintaining the bangs is a monthly process, and that is allowed, just not cutting them back in (because that's messing with the hemline). I have to be strict about some things. ;)

lapushka, yes, I understand that! :) I've had bangs for a couple of years now and they really need regular maintain. I'll be sure to decide before the challenge begins! Is it okay to do it another way around: if I maintain the bangs for a couple of months but then decide to grow them out and won't cut them anymore during the challenge -- is that allowed?

Ok, thanks! :) I think I'll start with maintaining and then let it grow out if I feel like it. I've been a bit bored with my bangs lately and since my hair thickness is just average, it would be nice to have more hair on the back. :hmm: But I'll think about it!

I'll trim the 31th in the morning /midday, since 1st is going to be a super busy day for me and I'd rather to have it done. So, I'll fail the last 6months without trims for a few hours  and after that, let's see if I can hit hip by July 2018! :disco:
As I measured it on me, I'm at waist with 64cm, now I'm 69,5cm and plan to trim 1,5cm to even the hemline... I'll hit hip at 74cm more or less. Yay!

So.. I was going to trim today because my last cut was end of January 2017 so figured it needed one. My husband has convinced me that it looks fine and doesn't need a trim so with a deep breath I'm going to join this thread. Might try to make it to the end of 2018 buuutt this is probably more realistic.
So strange not trimming when I was used to having a "trim" every three months at the hairdressers before lhc.
We can do this, guys! :D

I will be "hypothetically" joining this thread. I want one more last final "large" trim, before doing this.
Like a least a half inch, I have been micro trimming the last 6 months and have see very little growth.
But I have been using pretty crummy shears... as you all know. I bought some new ones.
But I dont want to do this trim until I got my new expensive shears. Which wont arrive until the 5th!
Ugh. So I will trim in January ... ill jut mentally be a part of this forum just not... physically lol

Oh, me too. I'm hoping for at least 6 cm of course, I'm gonna be really disappointed if I don't gain this. I have decided to wear my hair up as much as possible to protect it. And I just measured it too, it's 51 cm or 20 inches.

Yay! I really want to join in this challenge. i've been trying to grow out layers for the longest time (or so it feels) and their nearly all gone except for my old bangs. I've been holding off trimming since September. I know thats not that long but having layers my fine hair gets damaged so easily... this is the longest time between trims since I started growing them out.
So Im thinking tomorrow i'll start the new year with a slightly bigger trim, just to finally get rid of my layers and even up the ends, then hold out from having trims for at least 6 months. so excited to see how long my hair ends up by then!

I am waffling between microtrimming all year and doing this. I have recently become fixated on the imperfections I see in my hemline, so it would probably be healthy for me to put it up a lot more and ignore it so I can power through until July. I really want to get to classic in 2018 but I keep impulse trimming. I need to settle down. And maybe accept that this will be my hemline at longer lengths. Anyway, I don't measure before and after trims so I'm not sure how much I took off, but I only gained about 4 inches in 2017 as far as I can tell. And it would be nice to see what my 6 month growth rate is, now that I've decided to tag husband in rather than trying to measure it myself.
I did an itsy bitsy trim on Wednesday, so I would still qualify for this thread. We shall see. At the end of it I could always treat myself to a trim at the GM salon I've been eyeing.

But I do have the bare minimum taken off the ends once in a blue moon at the hairdressers, maybe once every year... I think fairytale ends on wavy/wurly/curly hair is awesome. My hair is heavily layered and so it thins out towards the bottom as well. I just leave it be. It's just the way it is. As long as you don't have a mass of white dots or splits (a few you can always S&D out), then it's fine.

I completely understand! In 2013 I had bra strap length hair but was soooooo unhappy with the way it was growing out, I had layers and the ends were just super thin. I cut it not too long after and tbh... worst decision I ever made! It actually was healthy but
I was just sooo fed up trying to grow it out that I went shorter and even more layers. I say leave it till you get a little longer then your desired length. that way you can even out your hemline and not loose too much hair

I did my pre-challenge trim last month and I'm thinking maybe to try the whole year challenge instead. My MO for my bi-yearly trims is microtrimming the long part (the back of my hair) and then getting my much shorter front ends to be less damaged with the least trimming possible. This past trim I feel like I just made the difference between those lengths even larger. :( I really want to even out my layers without cutting off my progress in the back, but I wish I didn't have to keep my front layers so damaged and fragile and even though I didn't lose too much length on the whole with this last trim I really am tired of the layers difference. I'm thinking the plan I've had to grow out my front layers to a happy length where I can maintain and even my hemline would be achieved faster if I didn't trim at all, even if it stays damaged (which it always is). Ugh, I wish I hadn't any layers at all but it's partially not up to me since I fairytale, too! My back ends are BCL and my front is just past WL with this last trim. Overall it looks healthy but I might switch to the full-year no-trim challenge and see if I can make serious progress by leaving it alone and committing to protective styles.

Consider yourself automatically added to the yearly one. If you enter one or the other, it's fine until you partway trim (of course). Then it's clear you're part of one half of the challenge. :flower: Good luck!

Fun fact. I recently saw a proper pair of hair scissors I want to purchase.. BUT I told myself if I get them I would just end up trimming non stop..
So i've convinced myself that if I survive this challenge I'm allowed to get the scissors in June. And by the time June comes around I should have some dusting to do anyways.. :D

I'm going to join in here! My last trim was mid-October and my hair just inched far enough past shoulder that I can get it to stay up with a hair fork, so I imagine I can keep the ends in the condition they are now at least until July  especially with the arrival of my samples of Nightblooming's salves. I was thinking about taking a length picture but I'm just going to wait until February... but seeing your 6 month picture Suze has convinced me I should definitely wait until these 6 months are over for my next length shot

I was already in the 2018 no-trim challenge but this one is ideal since I last trimmed in October and I will probably need another dusting at the end of summer.
Sooo there will be a lot of face-framing layers maintaining in the next 6 months, but no trims!

This may be premature, but I am really enjoying not trimming my hair. I think I was trimming off perfectly good hair because of a desire to be thorough. Ridiculous. Just s&ding has drastically improved the quality of my hair. I think I am practising mindfulness. Detangling my hair is a breeze these days. I may just join the no trimming challenge for the latter half of 2018.

Yes, I think a lot of splits happen in the last few inches, not just the very tips, so S&D is a much better option, especially when the vast majority of the hair is undamaged.

I trim just above the split end, pretty much as close as I can to it, because losing length hurts... :)

I feel the strand. When I get to a rough part or feel a knot, I snip.
Light from a computer screen and/or tablet works marvellously, at night especially.

I have the same problem. Well, I can do S&D, but not for all of my hair, and it's not so easy. And my hair is full of split ends, so I don't know if it will ever grow longer, really. I suppose this is just my hair type then, super prone to split ends. I even have tiny knots in individual hairs.
But I found out that white screen is helpful for S&D.

I get those knots too, theyre called fairy knots. some users here are able to use a little sewing needle to undo it before its too late but S&D is really the only thing that you eventually need to do.

I think I'm out. I think I'm going to need to microtrim :(
Since mid December somehow my hair has lost 0.3cm for no discernible reason and hasn't gained any length according to my growth chart.
Fhairyqueen get a tape measure, put the tip to your hairline next to your forehead in the middle of your head and then move the tape over your head and down your hair, measure that way :)

2/ 0.3 cm is a measuring mistake that is fast made!

I did end up trimming half an inch - I got DH to measure afterwards and somehow it came out the same length as before, 88cm. THEN my DH told me he didn't count the racers before, just where the main bit of my hair ends so I guess I just got rid of the racers.
Still, I'm what looks like an inch from BCL again so have been set back but my ends are a bit blunter.
Anyway, I'll see you all for the second half of no trimming 2018!

I broke down and measured my hair and indeed it looks as if I may have gained somewhere around 1/2". I wish I had snapped a picture of my hair on the tape measure. I may do that tomorrow so on March 1 I can compare. It is super easy for me to mess up with the tape measure. I think it could be easy for most people to make mistakes like this.
Anyway I find this encouraging....still wishing good luck to all.Jas, sorry you had to drop out, good luck on the second half.

I had to bow out too... though I was continuing on from the second half of 2017 challenge and hadn't trimmed since May 2017. I tried to only take off about half an inch, it was just feeling so terribly unhealthy down there. I have been having a terrible time getting accurate measurements because of fairytale ends and because curly hair is a pita to measure, so I don't know exactly how much length I lost, but it's not really visible, so I'm okay with it. My last measurement made me really feel like things have been breaking off a lot, because I hadn't made much progress at all in the last 4 months. So hopefully this will help and I'll get some fresh new growth that will stick around.
See you all in part 2 of the year.

I did a little S&D and found the odd white dot, always just 1mm (0,1cm) from the ends but no splits and no fairy knots either. Get some of those sometimes but not lately I think. Anyway...yes I could do with a trim but I always think that and I can really start seeing the length coming along so I feel quite comfortable not trimming. Going to take a photo for the BSL 2 waist thread so I hope I won't feel to bad about my hair then. If I do I WILL come back and wine about it here. Sorry in advance guys.

Depends. Do you see a lot of white dots in your hair?
I'm not going to tell you how to treat your hair, but straightening often might be a little counterproductive to not trimming... You might lose a lot to breakage, the hair making its very own "trim".

Oh, OK. I hope you don't get many more white dots, because those can be tricky. And due to the heat all over your head, they can go quite high up a strand causing possible breakage (I had that happen to me). If it's a monthly thing and you keep the temperature reasonable, I doubt you'll see much damage. I once went ham on the heat and got white dots up to my roots (well a few inches off)! I grew it out to hip and some broke off, but most hung on for dear life. When my mom finally did the S&D at hip, I lost half my thickness up to BSL, that is how much the white dots still hung on, so we cut back to bra strap.

Suze, I often feel the same way! I look at my hair and I’m like, “look at all these white dots! Look at all these layers in front that need to grow out!” And then I realize my hair doesn’t really look that bad at all, and I’m just frustrated and taking it out on my mane.
I think your hair is really lovely and I can’t wait to see what it looks like in July!

Welcome CaranDulin.:)
I have these thoughts where I think: I might aswell cut my hair because it just look b疆 and then other times I'm like, considering evrything it looks quite good maybe I should let it grow even longer then waist. I think I caught a bad case of LHC-itis. I'm just frustrated with myself and am taking it out on my hair I guess. My poor hair, it has done nothing to deserve this negativity.
In any case when that mood strikes, just make sure to come and talk to us first before doing anything drastic! :flower:

I havent been doing any length pictures or checks all month. I am going to try and go the whole first half without documenting and over analyzing my length.
I think it will keep me going and make this whole 6 months of no trims, I have been doing intense s&d every 2-3 weeks in place for when I micro trimmed. It helps lots.

Really? But your hair is beautiful, I love all the pics you post, suze! And you've got a great hemlime, that's something I crave for myself :flowers:
As a side note, today I realized that whom I addressed as "the long haired girl" in my class (lovely blonde wavy mane, looks very soft and healthy. Yep I'm a hair stalker) actually has the same lenght than me, WL+, if not 1 inch shorter! Those high waist jeans confused me lol, and the fact that I look at my hair and see it shorter than it is. My hair is really really going places!! :D

I feel like everyone has seen growth in this challenge except me, lol.
I hope by the end of this I will have managed to gain some sort of length.
Aww, thank you so much. It's good to know others get these contradicting thoughts too. They are anoying, right?

Yes, I will. I guess that it is just That I feel really down lately. I need to get over it, lol. And the good thing is: I'm a bit scared to actually do a trim myself. I have to watch lots of tutorials first so when I will be actually ready to trim the urge will have been long gone I think.

Thank you so much!:smooch: I'm having some issues with my scalp again so that might be a factor too. I just need to get into braiding again when the problem settles down and enjoy my hair a bit more.
Your hair is already long!! Well to me it is anyway. And I love your braided styles. They are awesome and look so pretty on you.

Thank you Suze :flowers: actually I think that we both share the same lenght, despite it might looks longer on me as I must be shorter (I'm 5'5"). I measured last week and I'm at 78'5cm :) waist for me was 73-74cm, and I'll be at hip at 83cm... By the summer :o
I'm happy to grow with you!

Well I'm out.
I'm not sure what happened to my ends, but all of a sudden they turned velcro, and I could hear the snapping when I finger combed through. I tried working through it for a while but nothing I did was helping. Not sure if I just didn't protect them enough from the dry winter air or what, I think I might still have some left over perm on the ends which might have contributed as well. I trimmed about 3/4" maybe a little more (only here could we lament such a thing :p ), ends feel much better.
Hopefully that's it for the rest of the year, I plan to baby those ends because I don't want to have to trim anymore this year. I really want to make it to hip by the end of this year if that's possible. Good luck to the rest of you. :flowers:

Haven't trimmed since December, I'm in it for the Long haul though, no trims for all of 2018. I'm barely at shoulder length so I have a long time before I reach my goal, but I'm excited to see what progress I will make this year. 😊

Thanks! Sorry, I get all needy when I feel down. But the support in this thread and on this forum really helps. Recently got some stupid comments about my hair and they stick around in my head too much.

Oh, this is so weird for me because when I see your photo's I always think it looks so long, and it does. But yeah we are at the same length then. I'm 5'8" (1,73m), and waist is about 84cm on me. It is nice to have a growing buddy!:cheer:
If I want a straight hemline it would take ages to 'grow out' my U-shape so I may aswell just keep it. I think bunning etc. woukd be easier with some taper but at the same time I would love it all at one length. I will just see where my hairjourney takes me.
