View Full Version : Crown braid

I've seen various threads and tutorials mentioned. However, I'd like to have my hair done like this next Saturday.
At the moment I can barely do a french braid down the back of my head without it being wonky, I doubt I'll be able to learn how to do the crown braid in time for Saturday.
If I get it done in a salon, or get someone to come to me to do it on Friday night - will it be ruined if I sleep on it? I have a sleep cap if that makes any difference.
We are out early on Saturday morning for an event.

On my own hair - as long as the braid is secured well and I have used some grip giving product (like hair powder, really recommend it for you!!!!!), my crown braids usually are even better on second day. The sectioning is not so clear anymore, it looks softer and my hair looks thicker.

I *really* recommend some styling product for you though, especially hair powder/volume powder is like created for your situation.

And yes I would use your sleeping cap.

Thank you! I will have a look for powder.

I am hoping for something like this :

or this

because most other 40s styles I've found are for shorter hair, or require curling which is a nightmare.

Beautiful! However those are not crown braids. Those are either heidi braids (2 braids wrapped around the head in opposite directions) or coronet braids (one braid wrapped around the head, needs very long and non-tapering hair). I assume they are heidi braids from the way the hair is parted. The braids seems to have been propped up sideways somehow, so that the braid pattern is visible from the front. Typically the braids are flat against the head.

so that would be easier than a crown braid then :D
My hair isn't long or thick enough for a coronet, I think.

Yea those are just braids wrapped around the head which is so easy. I recommend amish pins to make them stick up like that. I do it when I want height on top. Sleeping cap will make it stay in place without frizzies. I wear crown braids for like 3 days with my silk cap and it looks nice.

The first photo you shared is a coronet braid: 1 English braid wrapped and pinned around head. That requires around ~ classic length.

The second photo is heidi/milkmaid braids: just start off 2 English braids really high up - preferably at your ears or maybe even a bit higher than your ears (but leave enough "give" for folding on top) and then pin each one up to the opposing side/ear. The placement is pretty high up here. Depending on how long your hair is, you might be able to create a whole "crown" from those 2 braids. If your hair is on the shorter side, you'll still be able create that braided top, even if the braids don't go all the way around to the back/the nape.

Good luck! :cheer:

Thanks, I can get the Heidi braids but they don't stick up much so Amish pins sound like a good idea.

Thanks, I'm not quite a waist length. Had a very quick go this evening - posted pic on instagram. It's not as high up as the 2nd pic so your advice is very useful :)

I can do Heidi braids, they're pretty puny though! I have quite a lot of taper :( Arctic can you recommend any brands of powder? Even if it's just a starting point to find something similar here. Thanks

I have only used a Finnish Pirkka brand, they are not sold outside Finland. But I think Got2B has a highly rated volume powder, affordable too! The volume/hair powder will help make your braids more massive and substantial, as well as will give staying power.

Thanks! I've seen that one before :)

I managed it, wasn't quite as full as the ones in the pic (would kill to have hair that thick!) and maybe could've done with being further forward but I was quite happy :) I picked up a hat that matched my dress & cardigan just before lunchtime, so it ended up covered up mostly.

I like it on you, and with your outfit! Did you try hair powder? If yes, how did you like it?

Thanks all!

Arctic yes I bought the Got2b powder you suggested. Felt a bit sticky but it held in place quite well. Maybe a needed more to plump up the braids.

Meteor I fell in love with the dress as soon as I saw it :)

Ahhh gorgeous!!! That is a dress that not only is pretty itself, but it's one of those dresses that shows off the lady wearing it! Absolutely spectacular head to toe!

I was going to recommend Osis hair powder it's very, very good. It's a tiny red bottle. Platform hairstylists use it in their crazy updos and the powder is cheap :) figured id mention it just in case anyone else tries this. It's not at ALL sticky and you use it on dry hair. More you add more height you get. But I mean like pageant hair BIG, so beware! Hehe
