View Full Version : Selling hair from the UK and possibly further afield

Hello, I was wondering if any UK peeps had experience of selling their hair. I suppose I could do an international sale so not ruling that out, but it might be less complicated with postage to do it within?

I have hair a couple of inches shy of fingertip, it has never been bleached or coloured apart from henna, and it has never seen any heat styling of any kind including hair dryers.

As well as needing the money, i'm really eager to cut my hair ASAP. Having really long hair has been fun but I feel done with it.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get the best price for hair? Afterall, it has been probably good 7 years in the making and i've taken very good care of it... (with lots of help from this forum!)

A quick google search did bring up sites with hair calculator type things but it was treating all coloured hair in a certain light, not accounting for the fact that henna is nourishing not damaging.

Perhaps there is a place where you can do a blurb with photos a little more like Gumtree/Craig's List

Any help much appreciated.

Thank you ^_^

Maybe take part in Pantene's campaign (if it is still ongoing), or another charity's campaign. They will not *buy* your hair, though. And then, I fear places like Craigslist might just attract... people you might not want to attract. Just take that into account.

I think hair that has been dyed (henna or not, it is red, red is red) will be harder to sell too.

I'm not very helpful, am I? :(

Thanks Lapushka! I'm unemployed though, definitely looking to sell

Just an FYI, the people who will pay the most money are the hair creepers. There was a thread about this a few weeks ago, and someone posted the 'main' site that hair is sold on. Unfortunately I can't remember which site it was, but if you do a search, you should be able to find the thread.

Another option might be opera/theatre companies, but they likely won't pay as much. In England you might want to look into the English National Opera's wig/costume department.

It'll be harder to sell it as a lot of wigmakers want to dye the hair themselves. I personally love the idea of henna'd wigs and hair extensions, but I guess it's hard because it takes several people's ponytails to make a wig. The wigmaker cannot find as many henna'd sellers, and if they do, they can't tell if they used pure henna or the cheap metallic "henna".

How long/thick is your hair? If your hair is thick and long enough, I'll buy it. I am actually collecting colored, processed, non-donateable, and unsellable hair to for my research/study, and I can definitely use henna hair to see how it compared to virgin hair and damaged hair, and finally blend it with the rest of my henna-tested wefts of hair once I am done with my study.

What brand of henna did you use (I am using hennasooq's Red Raj for my study)?

I know this is LHC and it's kinda not the right place to ask for hair, but since the topic came up: If anyone is thinking of trimming their hair at least 6 inches or have old human hair extensions and ponytails laying around that you don't know what to do with (or will throw away), please send it my way?

Thanks Tosca - can you tell me more about the hair creepers? The search didn't come up with anything useful..

Hm, theatre, hadn't thought of that!

Oooh intriguing, what's your research about?

I used Lush Cacao Rouge the first time, and this the second time http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/henne-color-henna-powder-hair-colour-copper-red-60027036?skuid=027036&&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_adid=192265854642&utm_adgID=58700002379627196&gclid=CjwKEAjwpdnJBRC4hcTFtc6fwEkSJABwupNiZGCLNgky 0Q9SlDC5a6pPcVh6fwmDw-PkLq4CZCS1dxoCRJ3w_wcB - both a while a go so it's faded but still vibrant red in the sunshine.

I am trying to research ways to restore damaged hair that is usually thrown away. I heard that Locks of Love and other charities throw most of the donated hair away because they're not good enough for wigs (or they sell it, and if those hairs are sellable... surely they're not completely useless. Hmm.)

I know that women spend tons of $$$ on hair extensions, use them only a couple times or a few months, and then throw them away because they're too matted for their own hair. Yet, good human hair is a rare commodity with high demand. What if there was a way to take all that old hair (a waste product) and reuse them as suitable wigs for hospital patients? Mostly patients with alopecia or temporary hair loss thanks to chemo. Most human hair is fresh hair hence very expensive, yet synthetic wigs don't last as long and usually don't look as good. What if there was a third option - refurbished hair that is human hair (hence has the benefits of human hair) yet just as affordable as synthetic wigs?

There are four parts to my study (I am still in the process of tweaking the procedures): restoration of hair, reliable way to color processed hair (or blend it in a way that will disguise bad dye jobs), perform a blind test with virgin hair bundles and restored bundles (ask or hire hairdressers to rank the bundles by quality and guess which ones are virgin), then turn the bundles into wigs that will be given to patients who volunteer to use it for a year and provide feedback. It's the test of time that counts.

I am accepting discolored and unevenly colored hair as well, and hair that are dyed non-natural colors. I am thinking of methods that would help these colors blend, and thought of hair heckling like how this lady does it (https://youtu.be/2IPbpd5p5g0).

Henna is part of my study, along with different chemicals, products, and methods. I have a lock of henna'd hair that's 3 years old and it's still extremely vibrant (even though it didn't get the daily wear and tear of hair still on my head), which is what made me consider henna as an option to create durable, long lasting wigs with beautiful vibrant color.

To be honest, I didn't feel confident about my study at first. It could be a total failure, but dammit I gotta try. A lot of people I spoke to thought my research was interesting and that I should at least try. It will open up discussions and give other scientists ideas to consider.

I am still seeking virgin hair, which is the most difficult to find especially since I don't have the budget (I spent my money on buying the chemicals and supplies). A local hair extension specialist sent me some of her old hair wefts that her clients threw away, but I still need more samples to test on and then turn into bundles plenty enough for several wigs. Currently I am performing trials that don't require virgin hair, but for the last portion of my trials, I'll have to use virgin hair alongside processed hair.

If only I had known sooner. I cut off 6 inches in one piece, and a few shorter bits last November. All virgin, all in excellent condition (no splits, no white dots). It all ended up in the trash. Darn. I would have sent it to you - no charge too, just my shipping costs.

Maybe you should open a thread about your research esfand so more people know about it and don't put their cut hair in the trash but in a enveloppe. :agree:

Your study sounds very interesting.

The trouble with selling hennaed hair to wig makers or for extensions is that even with BAQ henna, you really can't dye it to match non-hennaed hair. It stays resolutely orange in most cases, and the people who used indigo provide hair that can get a green cast if they try to lighten it with peroxide. Thus, hennaed hair might be excellent quality, but it's seriously limiting for making wigs or extensions.

That leaves people who purchase hair for other reasons. Some, like esfand, may want hennaed hair for experimentation. Some might like the shade and use it for fiber arts, I suppose. But a large segment of the remaining market like to purchase hair for erotic purposes, and it's up to you to decide whether that's something you're comfortable with.

I came up with the experiment last week! If only I had come up with the experiment sooner.

As long as they're getting the hair with consent, good for them!
