So I just did some physics for school to learn more about lasers, and in testing a strand of hair, it turns out each strand is about .1 milimeters thick, just about exactly 100 microns!

Isn't that neat?

I think about half of that is fine hair? I could be mistaken.

There's actually a very wide range. I've seen people whose hair must have been 0.5 mm in diameter. My hair is very fine textured and I'll bet it's well under 0.1 mm.

Oh sorry, I was really tired last night and should have clarified I was measuring my own hair and using an average strand that shed out.

Oh yes, very neat! It would be fun to measure my strands! If that was an avarage strand of yours, your hair is more like coarse than medium.

That's so cool! it would be interesting to see how it varies across the different hair types, I'm curious about what mine would be now!

We did this way back in high-school physics, but with a micrometer screw gauge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micrometer), not laser. My own hair didn't even register when measured, it's that fine.

My old hairdresser had one of those, but it was tiny and round (analog and like a clock face). She once "officially" told me I had F hair, so I guess I can say that with ease. I had a few M hairs in there, but there weren't that many. She measured several. I had no idea what the heck she was doing at first.

This is so interesting! I'd love to measure my hair and finally know for sure whether it's fine or medium. I guess a little of both but mostly F.

I have access to a micrometer and have measured and done microscopy on hair, mine and other LHCers. Mine is also about 100 micrometers on average. :) Fine hair I've measured 40 micrometers at the finest so far.

Arctic, I've had a person or two on here send me hair to measure. :D

Fine blond hair next to coarse dark hair. :)
