I searched through 20 pages, and didn't find a specific thread for this, so here goes. Thoughts on long hair with curly bangs...yay or nay? I will post several photos to help with the decision process!

This is several years ago. Hair is thin from post baby shed. I have a big forehead, which is part of the reason I gravitate towards bangs. But I don't want to be fussing with straightening them each day!

Janurary 2016. Last summer I chopped this into a short shag. Currently at shoulder blade length. I've been growing the bangs and pinning them back, but now I am at a crossroads of deciding if I should keep them. Goal hair length is WL.
Goal photos for reference. This is a lovely lady "Merriyogi" from Instagram. My hair is not quite as curly as hers. I'm 2C/3A.

I like the look of curly bangs. I also like the look of curly hair without bangs.

It's more important your preference. If you find you genuinely cannot decide between the two, your next question should instead be "how hard will it be to care for to keep it from sticking straight up" or "how much of a pain in the butt will it be to grow out if I decide not to keep them indefinitely?" The first because I have heard curlies complain about their bangs sticking straight up if they don't strong arm the bangs with gels or creams or similar. The last one because I would not be surprised if growing out curly bangs may require a different technique or styling or clipping back than growing out straight or mostly straight hair.

If you do get bangs, I do think they would look nicer if you did not choose to straighten them, but as I mentioned previously, your preference is more important.

I apologize for the visible photo code. I'm a posting newbie, but this has not happened before!

Thank you for your feedback Akurah. You absolutely nailed it with the hair care part. That really is the main thing I'm struggling with, as I'm already pretty sure that I look better with a little forehead coverage! The other thought is, how will this style look worn up (with curly bangs). That is something I don't have experience with.

It's a nay for me personally. I like it on you though, it's very nice! I've got way too many cowlicks to pull it off and not enough "curl" to my hair.

I like your bangs very much! great style!
I have bangs too, wispy bangs that I keep more to the sides, I think curlies in the 3 area often need some movement around the face, also CG cuts usually leave at least some wispy something in front. Personally I don't find bangs difficult to handle. My only concern is to keep them away from most of the moisturizing stuff I put on the rest of the hair, so they won't look greasy.

Randomly I read that curly bangs are one of the new fashion trends right now! Not that that probably matters either way.
Also to note bangs that part in the middle and fluck out have recently become trendy too, probably a fringe look you could achieve.

My friend has very small tight ringletty hair and a longish face, she used to pull it tight back off her face. I remember the day she decided to cut bangs In Was a revelation! Just two or three little ringletty fronds either side really softened her forehead and gave more balance to her face.

Kate bush had curly bangs , thick heavy ones, sometimes just wavy, sometimes she'd wear them as a side part, big curls on your hairline have the advantage of looking like vintage quiff / finger wave fringe with out the effort of heat or pin curls and setting lotions etc.

Google curly bangs there's some lovely looks!

I actually think that curly bangs suit you more than no bangs. I really like it! I'm also curious as to how they would look with your hair up though... I've only ever seen long curly bangs with an updo, but never short.

I have a forehead about the size of yours, and I have bangs. I think you look great both ways. Do you have any other factors, like oily skin that the bangs get in? Cowlick? I'm dealing with both of those, and I really wish my hair were all one length. Akurah pretty much hit the nail on the head. How much of a pain will it be to dry your bangs? Will you need to use heat?

ETA: This link (https://www.buzzfeed.com/tabathaleggett/celebrities-wholl-make-you-proud-of-your-fivehead?utm_term=.gexL7myLL#.koEYbRmYY) helped me feel better about leaving my forehead bare.

Thanks Ghanima! And good point about avoiding moisturizing stuff on the bangs. That's not something I had thought about before!

I absolutely love Kate Bush's 70's hair, and have many photos of her hair Pinned! I'd love to find more photos of curly hair+bangs+updos. I'm thinking softer styles like braids will look best. I'm still learning, and my hair is only just at a length that I can pin up in simple styles, so perhaps it will just be trial and error over the next few months!

Thanks Prism! That photo gallery was awesome! I think ideally I will keep a soft, longer bang so that I have the option to pin them back. I have about another month before I'd have to trim them, so maybe I'll use this month to play around with different styles.

Personally for me, I love bangs. But my hair is curly and I don't like the look of curly bangs. So I straighten my bangs only. And it's fine because that hair gets trimmed more often and I'm not intentionally growing them. So if I was you, I'd do the bangs, especially if you like them and if you don't like them curly: then straighten them. Because it's not like that hair is more fragile or needs to be treated nice, cause in a few weeks you'll need to trim them. :p That's how I see it.

That's an excellent point about not worrying about heat on bangs as they grow so fast. And it would actually give me more flexibility with hair styles if I sometimes wore them straight!

You are right OhSuzi! Just found this photo on Pinterest when I was looking for curly bangs with updos:

I've never tried short curly bangs for myself, only straightened, in a period when I straightened or relaxed my hair. The thing about short bangs is that they make any hairstyle and updo feel more contemporary, and also that they make the eyes pop. And you have fantastic eyes! So I personally would vote for short bangs continuation, like in the picture. In fact you're making me think I may do the same. Next cut day is the 25th as it's new moon, so I have a week to ponder on this, ha ha!

I'm confused are we talking about curly or wavy? That picture the girl has a little wave. I think for anyone who has probably higher than a 3a hair, it'll be a nay. I've tried them with my 3b/c hair and it does not work. So I guess for curlies I'd have to say nay, but if you have wavy hair eh it might work. I'm not fond of it though.

Yes the photo above is definitely wavy, not curly hair! My bangs create ringlets, unless I twist them into separate pieces while they are drying, and then fluff them out, and then they look more like the bangs in the updo photo.

I agree! I don't particularly like corkscrews in the bangs either!
The 3a type probably is enough in the middle to be able to work it out. I am 3a and have corkscrew allover the head, including the bangs, but on the forehead I open the corkscrews so you could say they become just wavy bangs. Whereas 2-types, which are the typically wavy types, have bangs that are usually not particularly wavy because they need length for texture to kick in. For a type 2 probably it is ok to straighten the bangs while on 3a it would look more artificial.
I mainly used the term curly to distinguish between those that maintain the texture in short lengths and those who lose it.

I love how bangs look on you!

I think it depends on the person and their curl pattern on how their bangs turn out. Like in this video I think this lady has gorgeous curly bangs: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4VQVex9mHhw
More recently I decided to try out bangs again, but I was having trouble finding tutorials that were meant specifically for curly hair, so that is the one I found that I did really like and I tried something similar. My goal was to have a Regency/Victorian era type of bangs like these: http://www.songsmyth.com/paintings/1806hairofelizabethburney.jpg
http://www.buzzle.com/images/hairstyles/pin-curl-bangs.jpg

Though I didn't trim mine short enough since I worry I'll lose my curl pattern, but I love how this sort of bangs looks on me and the finer strands of hair even comes out with some 3b and maybe 3c curls at this length, so I prefer it much better as compared to straight across for my hair, so I think it really depends on the person and what style they use. :)

Thank you Shepherdess! Yes, I love how her bangs look! It suits curly, layered, shoulder length hair so well.
I too love the regency look. I snipped a few forehead ringlets years ago, to style my hair for a Regency event that our daughter's and I attended:)

This would be my other option. Continue to grow out my shoulder length curly shag, including my bangs, and end up with a look similar to this:
https://s6.postimg.org/7o1910wfh/2017-05-15-11-18-39.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/7o1910wfh/)

The benefit being that I could have the layers pulled back when I wear it up (which is 90% of the time anyway), or I could have it up with a few face framing curls pulled out. I think I may have made my decision! Thank you all for your input. Bangs may feel like no biggie to some, but for us that are on a hair growth journey, it definitely takes lots of thought! You helped me so much with my thought process:)

How do people with bangs work with curly/wavy hair?

If you have curly/wavey hair it is likely that bangs would also be curly. You would have to use a straighteners on it every day, this will ruin your hair. It will dry, lack shine and eventually cause, (https://hairstyle-en.com/curly-bangs-ideas-for-short-hair-2021-stunning-bangs-curly-hair/) the hair to split. I'm against using these straighners and hairdryers. But on occasion I do have to use them. There is a spray called L'Oréal Elnett Satin heat protect styling spray that keeps your hair straight for 3 days. It protects up to 230°c and keeps away frizz and flyaway hair. It's light weight and applied to damp hair. There are other treatments like keratin therapy or relaxers but they destroy the hair so bad it's a ****ing joke and I never recommend them. Apart from the heat protect spray, you could try bangs that are made with real hair but are on a very fine hair band, these are fantastic, take it off, put it on when it suits you, these are purchased in a hair shop called hairspray, the girls are very professional and will match your colour perfectly.
