What sort of pins are you fastening with at the end?

I normally use spin pins for that part, but those pins look really interesting!

Just did this quickly on dirty hair, and it's not as pretty as the one in the video - might have to save this style for freshly washed hair, when it doesn't compact down so much.

Anyway, here it is -

In the description for the video she says she uses Amish pins.

Rope braids used in lieu of 3 strand. Apologies for dark picture, my coworker and I failed to consider the lighting.

For rope braid variation, I learned:

Twist each braid a different direction, or when you wrap one will become a little untwisted looking (you can see this a little in the picture)
If you are using anything thicker than a hair stick (like I did), anchor the braids with a ponytail per braid. Otherwise it'll be very difficult to get it in because the twists will sort of start higher than the base. Fork would also be fine because the individual tines are thin like a stick

I bought it a very long time ago. I don't remember what it's called, but I know other LHCers (or possibly former ones?) have these. If you want I can see about starting a "help me identify this hair toy" thread for it.

Oh wow I feel silly! I've always done the chinese bun with the braids going up over the stick the first time around and never liked how it made weird bumps.

My try. I crisscrossed my braids before inserting my stick, held really well and I didn't need to use a elastic at the base that way. Do excuse my rained-on (and dirty!) hair haha

Late response but do you have chopsticks, pencils, or knitting needles? Many people have one of those three on hand and any of the three can be used. You generally don't want to use disposable chopsticks unless they're the really nice kind (and very few restaurants carry those), and you need to make sure the pencil wood at the point is smooth, but you do not need any modifications to the knitting needles.

Yes! Thank you. I actually just bought some pretty chopsticks a few weeks ago and I tried a twisty bun yesterday. Still trying to learn not to twist too tight. I saw a bun you posted yesterday..or maybe the day before that I can't wait to try!

Oh man...well, here's my attempt! I clearly need to invest in some hair sticks :) I'm gonna put someone's eye out. I've never really done much other than a ponytail, standard bun or simple braid in my hair. My arms were not ready for this heh heh :P

Sorry to spam this thread but I was having such fun trying out this bun! The first one was pretty loose then I watched Wildcat's video and tried that version. I was able to make a tighter bun and and it feels more secure. I think because of my undercut I just don't have enough hair underneath to hold the first version, but I'm not sure. I also broke the head off of one of my paintbrushes and managed better with smaller stick! The third pic is just the second bun with a scarf covering my buzz, it's chilly out today! :)

Some of my first 'hair sticks' were long-handled paintbrushes, definitely much too long too! Hair sticks and forks were like a wow moment for me - once you get the hang of a few stick styles it's crazy how quick and easy it is to put your hair up. Your arms will adjust some (but lets be honest, anything too complicated and I still have to rest mine mid-way down the braid. LOL)

You're doing really well already, even if you're not used to it. It looks good! I'm amazed by how big everyone's buns are here.

Not quite enough hair for this bun, (barely more than one wrap of the braids!) but it does feel nice and secure and I think I could wear it for work with a few extra pins.

Very nice everyone! I did this early in the month, but only just realized that I'd had issues with transferring the photos and that one didn't make it. I'll have to redo.

Littlestarface, I always listen to suggestions! Check the list of past styles (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=132079), I'm still not at the point of repeating!

Ladies so many beautiful buns, big, small, light, dark, sparkly, love braided buns... and also so many beautiful sticks!

Here it goes one with my rosewood stick that is starting to peel off unfortunately...

And a more recent one with a set of korean chopsticks, man I have so many now, cannot be more thankful to my husband to introduce me to those, since I am too cheap to spend a lot of money on a real hair stick ;p

Everyone's look so nice. It makes it seem like a lot of hair!
A little late, but I actually did try this in May! I just procrastinate about getting the pictures onto the computer. I'd need to practice a bit more as the braid tails were sticking out in every attempt, but I quite liked it. Will definitely try this one again in the future, when I have extra time in the morning.
