View Full Version : I think I've possibly discovered a new bun?

So, I was trying to wrestle my hair into a french twist today with no success and gave up. But I decided to try something different after the initial twist of the french twist. I coiled my hair around the top of a twist like a cinnabun and secured it with many amish pins, one coil at a time. The best description I can come up with is maybe a reversed seashell bun or a seashell bun variant? Thoughts?

I wonder from your description if it is similar to the Equilibrium Bun?

It looks similar, but I form the bun above he initial twist that I make towards the bottom of my head and I form the main coil itself differently.

ETA: Instead of wrapping hair around my hand and twisting to form the twist (like in the video) I form the twist itself first like a french twist, then I take the length of my hair and twist it like a cinnabun coming out of the main twist.

Is this it? It's how I prefer to wear my hair and Ficcares, unless I let the tail hang. :)

(From WEO a couple years back, so my hair was shorter):

The coils droop a bit because I don't secure each one. I've seen similar updos with other members, too.

Decoy and Crystawni...very pretty

I have to try that, because now with a longer length, the top is hard to get to lay nicely after the twist is secured.
Bunning it would do the trick I think :hmm:

I don't know if I'm explaining this well, but is the first coil of the cinnabun portion on the inside or outside of the bun/how do you form the bun portion? (inside would be like a cinnabun, outside would be like coiling it from the outside in, like a seashell bun I guess?) If it's formed by starting on the outside and coiling the hair towards the center/inside portion of the bun then it would be the opposite of what I'm doing. If it's made by starting at the center of the bun and coiling around it, then that's what I'm doing.

It looks like it could be what I'm doing but it's hard for me to tell.

I used to do something similar when I had super-long hair. There was too much length to tuck behind the twist, so I'd coil it into a bun at the top instead.

I coil from the inside like a cinnabun (I need that to grab and hold the style), with the tail tucking underneath for a few turns around the stem. I've also done it the other way around but it's not as easy to secure/hold with my slippery hair. Like spidermom, my hair's too long to do a normal French twist, so this was my alternative. I love the shape it makes, how it looks from the front, and how soft the style is, too.

Oooh okay, that's what I'm doing then :D. Thank you!

It also works for other buns, like a LWB, and with sticks, forks, or whatever. :) I just love how it eats up some length so the bun isn't as heavy, too.

More examples from the wayback machine (excuse the Ficcares--it was my lookee, I got da new shinies pics ).

1st one shows the coils better:

And the tail, or without... :p

I do something like this too, but of course with my length it looks very different to yours. In any case, this is my favourite french twist variation, and it's my go-to style when I want to look elegant and have a flattering style. I sometimes make the bun (or more like a coil at my length) loose, voluminous and messy, sometimes make it neater, tidier and more compact. I think Nightshade has done a tutorial of similar style too, it was from her that I got my own idea.

Your versions looks both great Decoy and Crystawni!

Thanks, Arctic! You and Nightshade were the two members I could think of who'd done this as well, although I didn't know about Nightshade's until I was nosying through some older threads/posts not too long ago.

I don't have enough length and thickness....and have lots of slip :p

Unless I use a smaller ficcare, it is a 'no go' for me ...it slides right down my head :rollin:

Even that doesn't do the style justice ....and just looks like a messy blob on top of a twist. Oh well...I tried  lol

CrystawniWow, such gorgeous buns! And your ficcares look really really good with your hair color. Do you have a name for this bun? :).

Groovy Granny Oh, my hair is way way too heavy (and has too much slip) for me to do this bun with a ficcare alone. I used about 20 amish pins. I secured one coil at a time as I made the bun itself, then I pinned the heck out of the twist. Later in the day I added a ficcare for decoration :p. Even then, because of the twist this isn't a very secure hairstyle for me.

If I'm hearing you correctly, you could theoretically do any number of buns on top of the twist? So it's more like a french twist+bun variation of sorts?

Aww, GG! It's the messy blob I sometimes go for. :p It's also why I only use medium-sized Ficcares for this when my normal buns need a large. I do find a sneaky spin pin at the top of the loop is handy sometimes. :) Aaaaaand, I think my layers and thinner hemline help to secure the bun around the stem. Anyone with a blunt hemline may struggle.

Thank you, Decoy! I think your stunning hair does it justice moreso, gotta say! It just swirls so beautifully, and looks more uniform (mayhaps due to your pinning?).

And nah, I haven't named it because to me it's just a French twist with a bunned tail. French Bunny Tail? Hahahaha! And as mentioned, others have been doing it for years, too. Maybe Nightshade named it?

Yup, for sure! The twist eats up the length, but you're still left with a tail to bun whichever way you like. It's getting it to balance that's the trick.

We're talking TINY (messy) BLOB here :rollin:

Spin pin.....must remember that

Blunt hemline....I got it = struggles.... but I will keep trying :cheer:

The new bun is really an "invention" rather than a "discovery".

As an inventor, the next step is to race to the patent office. :cheese:
