I cringed so hard when I saw this video. I'm weeping for her curls.

The man in this video talked about here beautiful curls like they were a disease or needed to be fixed. I'll just sit here with my thick, voluminous head of healthy curls thank you very much.

Yep this made me cringe. I loved her hair better before too.

OMG, how is this different from thinning out hair at the root with thinning shears? (which is what he's doing) Horrible technique, and to say that he is "advertising" for a curly hair brand - terrible. Awesome for the client too when she runs her fingers through her hair and discovers strips of basically shaved off hair. Pffft. I have no words.

Yes exactly!

***Btw, this also makes me cringe because a hairdresser used the same technique on my hair because it apparantley woulld add volume. Nope, since I'm a 1a those hairs stood straight up and I looked like a hedge hodge for months (and not a cute one). Thank goodness I found LHC and learned how to self trim. I am never going back to a hairdresser, ever.***

He butchered her hair. If i were his client, seeing a playback of the work he'd just done, we would have exchanged some very real words. That is the nicest way I can possibly put it. Now I'm pissed.

What the... O_O Why "fix" something that isn't broken..

That being said, I think the end result looks good (like if I had just seen the after pic, and not the butchering of her hair). It just looked like thinner hair, which is nice as well. But I'm wondering how her hair will look and feel when the almost shaved pieces starts growing out? I'm imagining lots of tangles?

Oh my good god; that's going to look so bizarre as it grows out.

Right? When it grows she'll have an extreme amount of volume and density just at her crown. While more than half of her length will just look thin and oddly shaped.

Good grief, talking about the thickness of her hair as if it were a bad thing!! That really pissed me off.

I like how he's talking about how thick and unmanageable and poofy her hair is while actively fluffing it to make it as large as possible. -.-

That's just terrible. Her natural curls were so beautiful and her hair was so lovely and thick. :( He obviously had no knowledge about caring for curls, whatsoever. Just because it's challenging, it doesn't mean you need to obliterate it. Christ.

I couldn't believe what he was doing !
That's going to be a knotted and tangled rat's nest growing out .

Oh geesh this is so sad  I loved her big beautiful hair, wish my hair was more like that. So awful what some of these "experts" talk people into.

"We want to keep it long" he says - then chops half of it off....

She will need to keep going back now to keep the short parts trimmed. What a great money-maker for him. No wonder he likes it!

Growing out is going to be so awkward for her. This method was actually suggested for me

This made me so sad! Also I think the before was worlds better than the after. Sometimes 'curly hair specialists' have scarier ideas than the average hair stylists. And this is based on lots of personal experience, too.

Wow, that is sad :(

It is hard enough dealing with new growth at times (as good as it is lol) ....or growing out layers.

But then to cut all those 'tunnels' in...imagine how it will be growing that out....it is so weirdly placed :agape:

How can you be a curly hair specialist when you don't like curly hair, her hair was beautiful.. he cut it off at the scalp.

That's sooo unfortunate. I really love big big hair! Glamazon hair! She still looked pretty at the end but she didn't need to tame her gorgeous hair. Definitely a cringe worthy cutting technique.

I'm not a fan of the tunnel cutting technique demonstrated here, but I really like the styling products this company produces. Hit and miss I guess.

DH is the first to admit he doesn't know much about hair, but even he can't see any form of logic or reasoning in this style of cut.
If this is a "curly hair specialist", no wonder it took 20 years and a buttload of trial and error on my part to work out how my hair actually works.

Oh, wow... I remember this dude butchering someone's thick, curly hair ten years ago; she posted the befores and afters on CurlTalk (NaturallyCurly.com). All she wanted was a little shape-up and trim. Stylists seems to have an attitude that they can improve upon nature (instead of working with it) and are entitled to do what they want.

 I did NOT see that first cut coming! Yikes... I guess if you actually liked the cut (de-bulking?) and wanted to maintain it this would be easier than with thinning sheers as there are actual sections cut short. I know from experience trying to repeatedly maintain a cut that involves thinning sheers just starts to look odd after a few times.

Pet peeve: I hate before and afters that involves unstyled and often deliberately frizzed before and then a perfectly styled with product after. That tells me nothing! Wash and air dry both so I can see what difference the cut itself makes, not how different that AND a bunch of styling product makes it look, gah!

Is this guy for real?? Her hair was lovely! I only wish I had such thick hair! And how on earth is she going to manage all those short pieces as they grow out? If she wanted to put her hair up for example they would probably stick out all over. Nope nope nope... this is horrid!

You can tell she's not too happy with it. I know I wouldn't be with all of those random short pieces. What if she wanted to do a half up or something? It'd be a little weird with two inch sections sticking out.

The followup video really highlights the extent of her butchered hair. :( I really feel bad for her. I just want to tell him to get the f away from her hair.:nono:

I don't know, maybe I'm being silly but I feel very wary of people calling themselves experts on hair types that they don't have themselves...

In my experience, I don't think that's unwarranted. I've had so many people ask to do my hair, only to completely butcher it. I would feel much more comfortable having someone who does my hair, to be familiar with my texture of my hair and handle it on a fairly consistent basis.

OMG!!!!! I can't stand videos like these. I once saw a stylist ruin waist length curls with heat and he took scissors and sheared the ends and made them tapered !!! To create "edge"

This poor girl in this video. I hope she eventually sees the truth in her natural curly beautiful hair !

Nah I feel the same way too. IMHO you can only know so much about something that you don't have of your own. I mean it's possible, but this guy is clearly completely clueless, to me it just looks like he's sectioning off random chunks of hair and snipping way too liberally away.

And here I was thinking that one has to be extra careful when cutting curls...

I think you are right. I have 1a hair and every time I go to the salon they want to blow dry it to "make it straight". When I refuse and ask just for regular dry because my hair is already straight whatever I do to it they say that "NO ONE has COMPLETELY straight hair". They seem rather surprised when it turns out straight.

The video is horrible, this is not hair cutting technique it's hair butchering technique. And a pretty barbaric one, if I might add.

That butchered cut isn't versatile at all! you can't tie it back because the cut tufts would be sticking out chaotically.
