View Full Version : 7 Year Anniversary (or how I accidentally went from knee to ankle)

I can't believe it's been 7 years already!
7 years ago, to the day, I started googling super long hair to see if there was anyone else out there like me...turns out there was a whole community!
I've had such a blast with you guys, lots of great advice (who knew you could shampoo only the top of your head? And what is jojoba oil, anyway?), some wonderful meetups, and...wait. is that 16 inches??? When did that happen? Proof, my friends, that if you forget to cut your hair for a couple years, it grows. (deep insight, I know :P) And, maybe more importantly, proof that LHC is actually good for your hair. My hair was at my knees for 10 years, and I really think I wouldn't have been able to grow it (albeit accidentally) to ankle without LHC and the techniques I learned here.

So here are my length photos: (sorry to those of you who have seen them in past years)
https://c1.staticflickr.com/2/1483/26355713216_9c84b30373.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/2/1676/25776767064_eb393b9708.jpg
https://c1.staticflickr.com/2/1591/26289260032_4c1df59e7b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/2/1533/26428861441_276e09c82b.jpg
2014
https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7380/11788589026_231fabd24e.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/2/1636/26495529205_f0fcd51951.jpg
https://c1.staticflickr.com/2/1641/25641418923_e0aef6679d.jpg Then, in July, I decided my hair was TOO DARN LONG and I was going to cut it. Really this time. I just needed to force myself to do it. So I came up with a failproof plan: dye the hair from my knees down blue, it'll be awesome for a month or two, then start to look terrible, and I'll HAVE to cut it. So here's 2016.5
https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8216/28604390864_04dc593b98.jpg(oh yeah, my parents decided to join in the fun)

and then it just kept looking awesome (or at least blue), and the blue started moving farther and farther down my legs. I couldn't bring myself to make the chop... Here's my current length:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2909/33826869935_388b04cc10.jpg

It's now 66 inches, brushes the floor when it's wet, and I still haven't cut it. (I'm so bad at sticking to my resolutions...) But this summer, for sure! I'll definitely cut it back to knee. Or at least calf. Suddenly knee looks so short now... :s

Anyway, thanks to everyone for their support and camaraderie. This really is the nicest place on the internet. And I've been so happy to meet some of you in person at our meetups, or through the mail via swaps. You're the best. :grouphug:

I've seen people say that Sisi's hairstyle needed rats and false hair, but now I know that it can be done without it. *quietly vindicated*

Your wedding dress and your hair makes me think of fairytale princesses. <3

Wow, :crush: amazing pics. Your hair is just gorgeous and LOL, longer than I am tall (60" tall). You obviously got some really awesome hair genes from parents :p

Love your mothers silver hair, that color/length is as rare as hen's teeth in my neck of the woods.

Your hair is so beautiful! It's always been an inspiration to me. I love the blue ends! It's also neat to see how the thickness has travelled down the ends as time's gone on. I also love the braided styles. (Also, I love all of your blues!)

Thanks again for being my gifter and I feel like I know you a little better now. I especially liked the photos of the multi-person braids. I am sure you had help with those.

Wow... your hair is incredible! I don't know if my hair would ever grow that long, and if it did I think I would have to keep it in an "up-do" most of the time because I am pretty clumsy and I'm afraid I would get it all over/around my legs and mess it up– so SERIOUSLY major props to you! I love your wedding picture, it looks straight our of a fairy tale <3 !

Thank you everyone! You're so sweet.

I was thinking when I first started here that there wasn't really any point to doing any of these techniques because it would be years before I saw any results, so why bother, but seeing the length photos all together...it's really clear that my hair is in much better shape now than it was when I first joined. So for anyone doubting that it'll all pay off in the end, don't worry!

Oh, and VegVampireQueen, I TOTALLY keep my hair in an updo all the time. It would be a crazy hassle to wear it down doing everyday things!! you are not alone :)

I see an obvious difference in hair quality between your pictures from 2011 and 2012!
Your blue tips are an inspiration to me, I keep thinking about dyeing my tips now. After all, if I don't like it or it goes badly, I can cut it off. Or not! :)

Haha well that's mostly the difference between day-before-wash-day hair and day-after-wash-day hair that's just been oiled. Oil makes a huge difference! (even though I forget to do it on a regular basis) Like...2016 looks amazing and really long, but that's because it was still wet from washing...so that's kind of cheating ;) it didn't reach that length while dry for another year.

Thanks, guys! Sorry I've disappeared - I keep starting a thank you/update post and then getting sidetracked, but I'm so touched by all your sweet comments.
I just took a length/condition shot of my braid, and I think that's a good testament to hair health, more than anything else:
2009 (before I joined)
https://c1.staticflickr.com/2/1563/25891971663_57df403d13.jpg
2013
https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7403/9182823437_0e40604074.jpg
2017
https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2869/33932616391_86acf8181c.jpg

I think it's interesting that the circumference of the braid is clearly growing, and slowly going lower and lower. I clearly didn't take good care of my hair before LHC, and I'm so glad that changing my routines has had such a substantial result! I'm so interested to see what my hair thickness will be like when I finally cut back to knee...
