View Full Version : Using a Moon

I have finally created a hair moon 3" across. I have thin tailbone length hair and do not wear cinnabuns. I looked for a tutorial on how to use it but Sailor Moon just kept coming up. Does any one know of a tutorial? Well besides Torrin paige. She has 5 times the thickness of my hair and twice the length. So who out there has thinner hair and uses a moon? A little help please...Thanks

Here is mine.

I always have to use a ponytail holder and spin pins. A paranda might not be a bad idea too. I have had them fall out before. I can't make them work well without extra support.

Thanks Diva, I really hate using any kind of pony holders. I will watch it and play with it a bit.

I wonder the same, I haven't bought one yet because I'm too afraid of not being thick enough. They do look amazing though!

My response in the bun pic thread might have gotten buried, bparnell, but this is how I do mine :)

I tried wearing it with a nautilus as well, and was successful! The only thing is it that for me personally, I found it helped to make a slightly looser nautilus than usually because the curve of the moon tightened the bun substantially. I had trouble getting the moon to sit the way I wanted to at first, but I sorta figured out that to get it to sit right and hold securely, you have to work the moon into the bun upside down at first (same way you would a hair stick), grab some scalp hair while it's upside down still, then rotate the points inward towards your head and upward as you're pushing the moon through the bun. To get the points to sit almost flush against my head (they kept sticking out away from my head at first), I also pushed the points against my head as I was working the moon in. :)

I'm quite terrible at explaining things in just words, but did that make even a sliver of sense??:hmm:

This should work with any style you can use a stick with I'm pretty sure and I don't need pins, it holds really well! I haven't tried using it in my freshly washed hair though, that's when my hair is at its most slippery.

I also mentioned that I did my bun looser than usual, but that's because my moon is quite thick compared to my hair sticks. I saw the one you made and you shouldn't need to loosen any hairstyle for yours as it's thin enough. :)

thanks gals. My moon is almost finished, just a couple more coats of spray and then I can experiment. I will post an action shot when I can.

I can't wait to see the action shots! So few crafters out there make moons so I'm always looking forward to seeing new styles of them. :D

this is the only bun I was able to do with no horns sticking up. Just finishing this thread so it can be put to bed.
With horns:

no horns in a flip bun. This held for a few hours before it started to slide down the back of my head.

I will probably try a few more buns. Maybe a vertical infinity.

I also don't have super-thick hair, and my hair's a bit on the slippery side, as well, so I've had trouble getting a moon to actually hold a style together.

Here's what I've hit on as a solution: I make a simple bun and insert a hair stick horizontally, a little lower than I normally would. Then I insert the moon through the top part of the bun. The stick holds the bottom of the bun together, and the moon holds the top in place. My moon has a little star dangle attached to it, so in doing this I choose a stick that also has a little dangle, so I've got a nicely decorated look going on.

I use Torrin Paige's Minotaur bun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SR1TMSt45U (although my hair is so thin it looks very different on me - still cute though).

I always braid my hair when I use a moon, then bun. It seems to hold okay but I often have placement issues and wind up with devil horns.

I'm thinking I must be the only one who actually likes the "horned" look.

I do not have a moon, but I always figured a (non braided) Chinese bun would look fantastic.

Basically this thing:

You can also use a ponytail as an anchor. I haven't tried the twist method. I sometimes use a very short braid (like, each strand gets crossed once) as a base

I use a couple of spin pins to secure the bun and tuck the moon behind, otherwise it swings out for me. You can see a pic on my profile page if you click my username.

That's an interesting idea...I'll have to try that tonight and post a pic (if I'm successful). :)

I've always used my moon on it's own without any pins or pony tail holder. But my hair will also hold a bun with nothing. I just go in one side, make sure to catch some scalp hair and go out the other. I like the horned look, I do turn the horns either up or down depending.

My new moon finally arrived. Please excuse messy hair as I collected from PO this morning and put in at work. Has stayed firm all day. Got hubby to take photo.

Who did you buy from? I've seen a couple of moons here and there from various vendors, some of which don't look as good as the moons made by... wow. The name is escaping me. I think RavensCroft. Or did you buy secondhand?

I bought it New from Forevahairforks Art. She also makes hair forks and sticks. She has an Etsy store and Facebook page. They seem to be very good quality and she has excellent reviews. I'm very happy with the quality and smoothness.

Could you post a picture please. I want to try this

I won that moon! It was a raffle for charity. Tatjana from SiriusHairtoys carved leaves into it - it's really pretty. I wish I could do it :)

Oh wait, I see what you mean - the brontosaurus fork is a separate 2-prong fork, also carved by Tatjana. I decided the moon and the fork belong together.

Hmm I bet she could make a beautiful dragon fork.

I was looking for ways to use my hair moon (ready for when it arrives) and found this thread - definitely saving some of these ideas! 1

Two_wheels that brontosaurus definitely belongs with the moon, I love it :D Makes me want to buy a cow hair stick for pairing it with my moon like the nursery rhyme lol.
