View Full Version : Wet Brush vs Tangle Teezer

Does anyone else here have a Wet Brush? (A real one, I've read that there are counterfeit ones available online that aren't the same, so be aware.) I have used a Tangle Teezer for years, and liked it a lot, except that it was hard to hold and didn't penetrate my thick hair very well. I decided to try the Wet Brush and I'm so glad I did! It doesn't seem to harm my hair, is light weight but well made, and has a handle (making it easier to reach the ends of my now-classic length hair). It also penetrates my hair well. It detangles better than the Tangle Teezer. I have put one through some abuse already trying to help someone de-mat their hair, and it didn't flinch or lose a single bristle.

For me, the battle of Tangle Teezer vs. Wet Brush is won hands down by Wet Brush.

I have a wet brush, it tugs at my scalp like any other paddle brush out there; the TT doesn't do that.

I use the wet brush regularly and much prefer it to the TT. I felt like TT was breaking my hair.

I have the SPEED DRY Wet Brush (https://www.amazon.com/Wet-Brush-Speed-Hair-Pink/dp/B01BCU41UG/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1489526502&sr=8-2&keywords=speed+dry+wet+brush) and LOVE it so much I got one for the shower and one for my room
It had NO PAD and is so light, it feels amazing on my scalp.
It is very easy to remove sheds, with no water collection or pad care....and no 'hair ripping' noises of the TT type brushes.

I have both and I slightly prefer the Wet Brush because of the handle and I slightly prefer the Tangle Teezer because it grabs my hair a little less. Each bristle on the WB have a second, shorter bristle in the same hole. Where the two bristles meet can grip hairs every so often. I can't really explain it better than that. It happens so rarely though that I don't really worry about it. Also I occasionally get a particularly nasty tangle that the WB isn't strong enough to remove and I have to switch over to my TT. I won't be giving up either any time soon. So I would give the TT a 10/10 and the WB a 9.5/10 in terms of how happy I am with them.

I also bought the Wet Brush with boar bristles and I like that so much better than a straight boar bristle brush!

That's strange, mine only has one bristle per hole and nothing at all at the bottom to snag hair. I wonder if yours is a different model, or older?

I've been hearing about the wet brush but I looked it up and it's the type of brush with little "pegs" stuck in plastic holes, right? Whenever I use brushes like that, my hair gets caught where the peg meets the plastic and it rips my hair apart! It's why I could never use wooden brushes, even though people rave about those too... :/ I love the tangle teezer for this reason, it doesn't pull my hair out.

Exactly the reason why I love my TT too. :D

My wooden brushes don't have that, that's why I love them so much :D

But ontopic, I've also tried the Wet Brush, my sister loves it. It got stuck in my hair ..... so I'll stay with my TT haha xD

I wonder the same, because I have very fine hair and it never gets caught; mine also has only 1 bristle/hole and nothing to catch your hair on :hmm:
And I also have 2 different models of wood bristle brushes with no snags at all; the peg is perfectly set into the pad = brands or dates

Overall I much prefer the wet brush, but one of the models I picked up has the bristles like you described. So I don't use that one due to it getting caught and snagging, which really stinks cause the brush is so pretty!

I had a wet brush once and it had the two bristles mentioned above. It ripped my hair out badly, and plus I dislike brushes with balls on the tips. There is just something about ball tips that freaks me out which is why I am faithful to the Tangle Teezer. Now that the Tangle Teezer has a handle I'm so in love with it. It's definitely a GINORMOUS brush with long bristles that really works well with my thick coarse hairs almost to mid thigh lenth!!!

Compare the bristles on this with the orignal TT. It works amazing and it really smooths out my coarse hairs.

Interesting! :) Does it detangle with less snagging than the original? Does it bend more? It's just that "The Ultimate" is listed under "Finishing Brushes" on the TT website, so I thought the brand markets it as the brush for the "styling" step, after the detangling step, which would be supposedly done with the Original/SalonElite/Thick&Curly/AquaSplash? :hmm:

Over the many years on this list many of us have learned not to trust brushes with ball tips, as they can and often do, cause a lot of hair breakage. I would never try any version of the wet brush on that basis.

I think this one is the finishing one? Not sure but I bought mine at amazon. It says it could be used for detangling on the box and so I went with that. I knew I didn't want the one for blow drying.

ETA: I love this one over the original since I finally can move some sebum down my hair since I wash once a month. I do detangle with my fingers before I even use the brush as it is somewhat used as a final finishing touch for my hair. It's nice that I can finally have a brush that can touch my scalp.

If I remember correctly, Torrin tried the blow dry or blow fry edition. since then TT made the finishing series that can be used as a detangler as well. I couldn't find any locally as well so I ordered through amazon. I love it personally over the original since it can penetrate to my scalp cause of the long bristles.

I love the wet brush...sometimes I liked it more than the tangle teezer and sometimes the other way around. I think it works better on wet/damp hair than the tangle teezer.
I have been thinking about getting another wet brush since I lost mine a while ago. I usually preferred it to the TT as well!

I just found another brand (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MY96HVW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1) with boar bristles added and it is awesome!
It has the same light flex massage feel, with the benefits of BBB; good for cold weather use when the plain brush sometimes adds static....and the BBBs penetrate a bit more than the regular BBB.

Has anyone tried the Conair version of the Wet Brush? I got a chance to see it at the store today, and I almost bought it (but I already have a brush.) It's more substantial than the Wet Brush and the bristles are softer and more flexible (and there are two different length bristles). The handle is round and much nicer than the (cheap in my opinion) flat handle on the Wet Brush.

I'm severely tempted.

I've had both TT and Wet Brush (not sure which versions) and on my fine and fragile hair the WB seems to cause less breakage. I switched to a wooden brush for a week or two recently but it seemed to cause static rather than cure it so I'm back to the WB now.

I gave in and bought the Conair version, the big rectangular paddle brush. I LOVE IT. I much prefer it to the wet brush. The bristles are thinner and more flexible (so I can't rip out chunks of hair like I could with the Tangle Teezer) and the balls are smaller. There are two different length bristles. It takes a little longer to detangle than its stiffer bristled cousins but it actually works as designed instead of ripping bits out anyway.

The handle is also much, much nicer to hold.

I don't get how you do that. <scratches head> It has never done that for me, that's why it's different for everyone, I guess. I am the most gentlest with a TT, I find. My wooden bristle brush does nicely too, but it's been a while since I used that.

I don't get it either lapushka, and I have rough coarse crazy hair texture than Kaelee with her smooth silky straight hairs. It just puzzles me how a ball tip is more safe and works better than a non ball tip brush like the Tangle teezer on straight hairs like hers. I guess I'm with you that it's whatever floats your boat.

ETA: Being part of the wavy hair family I'd give ball tips a big fat no no for wurly hairs.

I have stick straight, very fine and silky hair and vote NO for ball tips for any type of hair. They cause breakage. The ones I owned have all gone into the trash long ago.

People can use whatever they want I guess, and maybe their hair is just different in some way.

The problem is that lots of products and methods seem good at first. It's over the long years that we eventually learn what really works and what actually causes damage.

I have a wet brush. I managed to lose my tangle teezer - I'm convinced it's hiding in my belongings somewhere. I do prefer the wet brush though due to it having a handle were as my tangle teezer didn't. I think they do tangle teezers with handles now. I've got thin, fine, silky hair that doesn't really knot easily and when it does they general come out without much effort so I can't really say how good either brushes are at detangling.

So, would either of these be good to use in the shower, before I get out of the shower and leave my hair alone to do its curl-thing? I'm seeing a lot of type-1 hair folks commenting.. am wondering about something with 2c/3a hair.

I have a Wet Brush and I love it because even the ball tips are seamless on mine. No catching at all for me and I love how flexible it is. The TT even on my thin fine hair couldn't reach scalp and I found it extremely awkward to work with. It even seemed to get tangled on my ends easily. I threw it away. Everyone is so different with their needs I suppose.

Have you guys tried the wet brush on dry hair? I mostly detangle dry hair as the corkscrews once wet become sure knots, but I have to finger comb first, then go with a wide horn comb. I was just thinking of buying a detangler to simplify things, maybe instead this brush could do it?

In the Winter it caused a bit of static, so I got a vented one with BBB that I use just for dry detangling.
I am so impressed with it; it distributes my natural oils and detangles very well.
Plus they are so light and flexible, they feel amazing on your scalp.

I use mine on dry hair too and it's really quite gentle after I finger comb any potential tangles. I have straighter extra fine/thin hair and I'm not certain if that makes a difference. The vented version sounds interesting and I suppose I'll check that out too.

We were just talking about the handle version recently, but do you think I can find the thread?!

I tied a string to the handle of the regular vented wet brush, but this will be more convenient because the string tangles/gets caught in things.

Now to go find that convo :eye:
