View Full Version : Are buns trendy now?

I have been wearing my hair down a lot in the last few months. I've noticed more and more girls wearing their hair in buns, though. Yesterday I was in a group of 8 girls, 7 of them have long hair, and 5 wore them as buns (I wore mine down.). I have to wonder if buns are popular now, and also how they keep them up. They have no Ficcares, or heavy duty hairtoys to make those buns. How can elastics hold up thick waist length hair? Somebody should really capitalize on this trend. :)

I've seen a lot of various ages of buns around, and I wear them occasionally. Honestly, I make my own trends, whatever makes me feel good that day.

I've seen buns for ages, especially the 'messy bun' kinda thing because most keep failing at a nice one with elastics. I could never do it so I grew up with ponytails. My friends with thick long hair usually put it right on top of their head-somehow. I haven't seen much of a difference except for more braids than usual lately because of the current 'trends'.

According to this page, it's the hottest trend. :D You have to do it on top of your head, though. Which might be difficult (for me it is anyway). http://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/gallery/celebrity-topknot-hairstyles

Instructions from all around the web seem to use hair elastics and bobbi pins. Why spend 5 minutes securing the bun instead of using a stick and be done in 5 seconds? :)

Well, nice to know we're suddenly trendy.
But I don't understand the hair elastic buns either. I have a coworker with tailbone length hair, and that's what she does. I can't make them stay more than about 5 seconds.

Very trendy, but they are all messy looped ponytail kind of buns.

I would guess they don't know how to do anything else.

I'd never done a bun other than with elastics or claw clips until I started lurking. If you don't see sticks and forks and spin pins around, you are unlikely to think to use them.

What I don't get with those trendy top-knots is why they are all pulled back so tight - to me the whole point of a top-knot is it takes the weight off the roots! But fashion...

I'll stick to my untrendy Edwardian oddity.

10 to 20 years ago, I would do a bun with elastics too, but my hair was never *this* long, because it was just too thick to handle (I didn't have the appropriate accessories for it). I'm glad I discovered forks & sticks, they are so handy to have and put your hair up with.

Good to know I'm in fashion. ;) :p

I see lots of buns about town. A surprising number of Bow buns amongst the Sock buns and messy top knots. Accent braids have been popular for years too.

I have moderately thick (4" exact pony circumference) below waist length hair (albeit at 5'2 it's not super long) and I can still use a scrunchie to wrap around a messy type bun. It's comfy especially if my hair is bugging me. Elastics hurt/pull but I think girls just put up with it because they think that's all they have. That's certainly what I thought as recently as this past June!

I've used scrunchies to hold up buns and that works fine for me. I've even got a lwb to stay up on its own because my hair is clingy. I don't use hair sticks or hair forks etc.

I'm not seeing that many buns around these parts.

Yeah, I see the messy bun / top knot a lot, always secured with an elastic. I actually don't like the elastic look. It makes the bun look wonky (to me almost all of those buns in the link sapphire-o linked to look "wonky"--too long, like they're being squeezed up and out of the elastic). The "messy" bun (which is a ponytail not fully pull through the elastic, I think?) is cuter in my opinion, less severe, but I'd worry that it's damaging to the length.

Before coming here, I knew nothing about the style of buns other than doing a loopy floppy elastic bun. This forum showed me the way of spin pins, sticks and forks and a whole slew of lovely buns, it was like Christmas day for me. Always on trend for me. Yea!

I've seen a few more buns around here, but mostly messy elastic buns. I've seen a lot more braids though, especially side braids.

Definitely trendy, even the guys are trying to get them. :D

Really, I don't think I'm seeing that many more than I've seen for the last few years anyway, but I'm in the Midwest and trends move slowly here.

This past year I've seen more buns on others than I ever did before, always high on the head, and not just those messy buns that have been around forever. Women of all ages seem to be wearing them, but especially the teens. They are usually very big buns, probably made over a bun form. They are definitely IN - quite a change for everyone except those of us who have been wearing them forever.

Trends/fads come and go but style is timeless. Simple buns are always elegant, always stylish.

Pah, messy buns... They may be cute, but they make my hair break and then it doesn't even look cool and wavy when you take it down... :( Stick with the sticks! ;)

I have been relatively successful making somewhat messy buns with an invisibobble hair tie and three bobby pins. My hair is hip length at the moment.

I think it is a fun trend :) I've always loved "messy", casual looks :)

ETA: I should add that my hair is nearly indestructible, so I don't worry about breakage. I can see how fine hair might not fair so well with this style.

Buns are really on trend where I live...but everyone uses elastics to hold them. I dont understand how it is comfortable for people to do that! Hurts my scalp just thinking about it lol

Midwest here. I have been seeing more and more buns around here. I'm not sure when the messy bun trend started but I would say more than 5 years ago. I see them everywhere. I adore messy buns. Sadly I have to work at getting my hair to be messy enough to look cool. I dress very casually 95% of the time. Jeggings or yoga pants and usually some kind of an oversize top over a tank. Flip flops or athletic shoes. I don't have a problem getting a topknot type bun to stay up with an elastic. Once in a while I have to use 2 elastics or stick in a hair stick for extra support. I don't see any damage if taken down carefully. A messy bun is a lazy girls best friend. It can be done in seconds and the hair doesn't have to be washed that morning to look good. I also see lots of braids. The side braid is popular with the teens.

It's all about placement. A high bun doesn't pull as much. The best elastic buns happen when I'm just putting my hair up to wash my face or so. :D

I don't think buns are that trendy. Maybe your long haired friends wore a bun because they didn't want their hair to tangle and catch everywhere?

Just teasing you, but wasn't The Silver SwirlTM a Keeper of Time or something, so how can it be timeless? :eyebrows:

Arctic - your memory is most excellent.

Prior to the crass commercialism of the Silver Swirl (TM), all of my siggies featured long hair and time as themes.

It is one of the great ironies that the Keeper of Time is itself timeless. :hmm:

I see a lot of high messy buns among young women here in NYC. Especially in the summer when it gets hot and humid. Some buns are so tight with so many elastics, most likely they break the hair when they are taken off, ouch.
I rarely see anyone using a hair stick or hair fork, sometimes a pen holds a bun.

I used to want to badly to be able to achieve that "cute" messy bun look, but now I'm finally all about that smooth neat bun instead. :p Hair elastics and messy hair make my fine hair break like crazy... not worth it at all!

I achieved a bang on trend messy bun with spin pins yesterday. Ok, it started as quite a nice cinnamon bun, but then I pulled my top off over my head to change...

There's also the scarf and shawl trend. When you're wearing a big scarf it's awkward to have hair down. I'm not sure if it's just in Canada, but most girls here wear big thick (and staticky) scarves.

When I do a top knot I have to twist very tightly. It feels more damaging than a casual low bun.

High buns on all ages are common where I am, but that has a lot to do with the hot climate and relaxed (yet buzzing with backpackers and tourists) vibe of the place. Neat-casual-cool is the name of the game, with a sideorder of low-maintenance. Trendy just doesn't fit here too well, but you can bet eclectic does. :D

I've been seeing messy buns here for years. It usually just looks like hair wadded up on top of the head and secured with an elastic. I never understood how they get it to hold.

It's really not difficult to bun thick waist-length hair with 1 elastic and nothing else. I used to do it all the time. They don't hurt or pull, or else I wouldn't wear them. It doesn't stay super well though and usually took a couple re-dos if I was wearing it all day. I always thought my hair was too thick to pull off a trendy messy bun, and instead I'd make a compact bun.

I can still make that bun, but having to loop my hair around more than once means one of the loops slips free too easily. I'll still do it if I decide to put my hair in a bun after having it in a pony and a spin pin isn't handy.

I have recently fallen in love with the figure 8 bun. I pony it, then I twist it up and stick it. Only had to redo it once in a day.

Here, especially on my college campus, it's all about the messy top-knot bun. Apparently, it's "in" if you look like you just rolled out of bed. Personally, while I do use elastics now and again (especially for work) I prefer forks and sticks because elastics almost seem to put more tension on my roots and give me a headache.

I also see a lot of large donut buns right on the top of people's heads. Some neat, some not. I'm not usually a fan of the bun donut though. But I've been seeing more twists and some bow shaped buns! I saw one where strands were twisted and shaped like a heart today on the bus....it was pretty cool. I think winter convinces most people to bun.

Messy buns are pretty much the only kind I can do but even if I could do a smooth neat bun, I don't have the volume for it*. It would look like an acorn. :p

I did get headaches wearing my hair up with normal hair elastics, but now I use those telephone cord (invisibobble) ones I can put it up comfortably without it being too tight or coming loose. They are also easy to take out without getting caught/pulling my hair.

Buns never went out of style for this gal - a plain cinnabun, either with amish hair pins/a velvet scrunchie wrapped around the perimeter; or hair sticks, that's my daily style. That aside, I do see lots of buns on others too, usually held only with hair ties (and like many I wonder how they ever get that to hold without pulling or falling out, I've never managed), or the sleeker buns with a donut underneath to fill out with more volume.

I made buns with two elastics until about TBL, and they were quite secure. Then I discovered spin pins and switched to them, until I got my first stick a few months later. Now I wouldn't go back to elastics because my hair has gotten too heavy for that (the way I bunned required a ponytail), but it's perfectly doable if the person has a more "normal" hair length.

I do see a lot of buns around here, especially among young women. For the most part, they're messy buns, or sock buns, mostly worn high. I guess that's just because their hair isn't long enough for any other type to look big.

Just to test for myself, I put my hair up with an elastic. It looked quite nice, although the way I do it the elastic usually shows...

Then I forgot about it and slept in it, and woke up the next day with it still in. No problem whatsoever. I could just add a spin pin and then it would really hold. Except I seem to just use the spin pin, because why use more than one thing? I'm too lazy.
