Hello! My friend will organize a Sisi Festival (she was the queen of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy) this weekend, and she wants to dress up like Sisi and make a braid. She bought artificial hair too, but she doesn't really know how to make this updo properly. Can you please help? Here are some pix:

It looks as if it is two braids, very long and thick, looped and pinned around the head, hanging down in the back.

They have that style on the dreamweavers link--if you go to the links at the top of this forum, I believe it's on there. It'll take you to a multitude of braid styles, and this is there--it's fairly complicated, but gorgeous! (ok, complicated for me:))

This isn't exactly the same style, but it is on this site :)

Wow! That's some gorgeous braiding. Way beyond my skill or patience but still beautiful.

Wow! I absolutely LOVE this braiding website. Thanks for the link. I can hardly wait to try some of these styles.

I'm so excited to have discovered LHC. I've got renewed motivation to style my long hair and try out new ideas. I was beginning to feel like I was in a real rut and didn't have anything to do with my hair. Now I've got great inspiration and new ideas.

Does this look right? My DH says it looks like an alien or something from Star Wars.:luke:

Thanks for the compliments. I am right-handed. So it was easier to braid on my right side. But the left side was more difficult.

I saw several more pictures of Sisi, Elisabeth of Bavaria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisabeth_of_Bavaria). She seems to have more hair around the front top part of her head in the painting. I wonder how it's done. Definitely more braids in the photograph. Very beautiful. But I cannot figure out.

I thought it was a perimetre braid at first from this picture; (http://www.longhairlovers.com/images/sissi/sissi118.jpg)

But there likes like there's more to it in this one (http://www.longhairlovers.com/images/sissi/sissi104.jpg) or this one (http://www.longhairlovers.com/images/sissi/sissi6.jpg)

I was wondering if something based on a 5-strand braid wouldn't be the way to go.

I don't think all the braids are made from her own hair or at least not from hair attached to her scalp. I think she used a lot of braided hairpieces, like so many other fine ladies of her time. She did have amazing hair but even she could do with some help.

Akiko, did you actually do that on yourself? That's amazing!

I don't think she used any hairpieces. Her own hair reached down to her ankles and she had a lot of it. So much she had headaches from the weight, but she refused to cut. Styling took a few hours every day so her updos just might not be doable for us modern ladies without personal stylist and too much time on our hands ...

I have a print of that painting of her in the ball gown in my living room and have often asked myself how the style was done. But even at that size it's impossible for me to see.
