View Full Version : Wearing sun hats (if spring would just get here already)

This year I've dedicated myself to taking special care of my hair and skin.
I use Retin-A, therefore I use sunblock on my face.
My hair I'd like to avoid sun damage and brass from the sun, so I plan to wear a floppy sun hat this year with a low bun when out.

My hair is ashy, I'd like to keep it that way without having to use brass battling shampoo and conditioners.

How many of you take the same precautions with your hair?
If not, do you use other methods?

I use sunscreen regularly, though I'm not perfect with it, and try to stay in the shade. I don't protect my hair at all :D That being said, I don't mind a little sun-lightening, nor damage. / Oh, I'm sorry you asked for people who do something with their hair, I'm sorry then I didn't notice :)

Raised by a redhead, I almost always wear a brimmed hat when outdoors. Why wait for spring?

Raised by a redhead and I am a redhead. :D I seek and wear the truely wide-brimmed (not the floppy ones) sun hats. It's a unique fashion around here and I get compliments but also look weird. I'd actually like some sun on my hair but I don't want it on my skin.

I love hats, and protection from the sun is a great excuse.

Still have the redhead skin, even if my hair has darkened a bit. I'm all about my brimmed hats when I'm out for more than a walk from car to building. Low buns work well, then double buns or something horizontal like an infinity bun when a round bun gets too big to fit. (Unfortunately, my infinity bun was too big to fit under my brimmed hat, which served as a tick in the "for" column of buzzing my head. Though cutting to waist probably would have accomplished that end. )

I happen to like Tilley hats, but they sit low enough on the head that it definitely doesn't help the bun situation.

I LOVE hats but have so much trouble getting them to fit with anything other than a braid. Any tips?

I wear hats all the time when outdoors, but it's to keep the sun off my face and scalp. Protecting my hair is a benefit too, i guess, but my my hair isn't the thing that's going to sunburn or possibly get skin cancer. =)

Really low infinity bun - like, down below the hair on the nape of my neck low.

Sometimes i pile my hair loosely on top of my head and quickly jam the hat over it (basically hiding all my hair under the crown of the cat). Works better for a hat that's too big, but i fidget enough that it usually only stays like that temporarily.

I go for a walk everyday for my health and carry a paper umbrella. At first, I felt a bit strange but then I decided to just own it. Not only have people stopped to ask where I got my parasol, I'm seeing more and more other people carry them. I find hats to be hot in the sun and the umbrella is like a big moving spot of shade!

How do you manage to secure that, though? I was never able to manage. :P

Lunasea and kittengirl, this is so funny! :D I wish I had the courage to rock a parasol. My skin is sensitive to too much direct sun, I usually wear hats and/or sunscreen but I don't know of a hat that could cover all my hair.

Up here in the mountains, it's too windy to not wear some kind of covering even if it's not sunny out, so I'll be doing this anyway.

Here's a photo of a wind turbine that couldn't handle the wind. I said it was windy here, right?

If the wind here ever stops blowing, all our buildings will fall down.
We only have two seasons, cold and wind.

Hairstick or Ficcare works for me. Hairstick requires a tighter twisting; Ficcare is less likely to fall out. My hair compacts a lot, so my bun is pretty darned small.

I really want to wear sun hats... but I have a big head and can't find one that fits me :( because of this I'm also sceptical about ordering online since I haven't once found any kind of hat IRL that fits my head!

I do a horizontal bun (braided L-Infinity) and of course, the hat doesn't fit over any of that, but the hat sits sort of perched on top of the bun, covering part of it a bit with the brim. But the strap under chin helps keep it all in place. That's the best I've managed so far. This protects the scalp and I hope the bun structure itself protects the surface of the hair length for the most part.

Yeah, you make it work. Without a bunch of scalp hair, the darn things always untwisted on me. Apparently my hair is rather slippery, though.

Heh. I think at least some of it is that my hair is thin enough that I sometimes have trouble getting scalp hair when doing a higher-up bun - I've gotten used to doing several buns that are just kind of hanging in a knot. I think the bun in the pic is actually a Celtic knot bun? Basically, for a low hat bun, I try anything that has the bulk of the hair smushed horizontally. :)

I try to wear hats because I'm prone to sunburn on my scalp. Last year my hair was pretty short, and if I pulled it back under the hat, it was just in a low ponytail. I tried a braid one day and it fell out in 2 hours. If anybody knows styles that are good for hair that's only shoulder length, let me know.

Oh my gosh I had the same problem. At that length I couldn't even braid and it drove me nuts. I resorted to two little pig tails. They were pretty cute. Though I did feel a tad rediculous because I'm not exactly a 6 year old. Lol. But still, they worked. Check YouTube for shoulder length hairstyles. Maybe you'll find a nice one. I'm of no help here because I have only managed to learn a fishbone and normal braid. They are still not even close to works of art!

I use a bunch of lightweight scarves and will wear them loosely looped over my head, especially useful when I would go for a walk during work breaks, because I would wear the scarf around my neck when in the office, and just bring it up over my head when I went out doors. I have a tendency to dress vintage, so it works well for me!

Oh, I was going to mention parasols. I prefer an unpainted (off-white) Japanese paper umbrella because I'm into simple styles right now. But there are also Victorian parasols or just regular rain umbrellas used as parasols.

I have many sunhats with stiff, broad brims. Also I have a large parasol from Coolibar that I use when it's not too windy. Originally all was to protect my skin, but now I want it for the hair and scalp too.

I would have put this in with my last post but I can't get the multi quote to work.

Parasol's are just lovely! I plan to get a simple one too. Like you I'm not into anything too wild at the moment. They can be great for up do's you don't wanna destroy with a hat.
I was thinking an off white as well, or maybe a pastel. They've got some cute ones online. I googled them just the other day. Super cute!

I swear, if I ever got a parsol it would be from here: A Bit Shady (http://www.abitshady.com.au/empress.php)

However, I do like my hands free (no handbag for me, thanks) so I still reach for hats (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/entry.php?b=105865).

Does anyone else carry a fan? I get warm and sweaty SO fast so I usually have a fan in my purse. Just a plain black fabric, no lacy ruffles.

I've used a parasol but I live in a small town in Norway... too many stares!

I just got diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and my rheumatologist told me to take care in the sun.
I've decided to get over my aversion to hats and try sun hats.

They actually can look really cute in the right outfits!

(Also I have a small collection of parasols for the sunny days.)
