I will just marvel at your hair houdiniantics! My old, original hair type would have qualified, it was very slippery. My current hair type is more textured and I have tamed my houdini (or so it seems, some days it still emerges!).

Mine is more like a lifer doing 100+ years trying to find any way to escape especially when he goes for outside recreation time. I dunno how many times I caught him trying to slip past and go out in the wide open world but thank god I catch just in time *woo* He is currently in solitary confinement(ie crown braid) 24 hours a aday except for shower time of course once a week under careful watch with snipers at every entrance. Don't get me wrong he still tries to escape lock down at night via slipping past the steel pins but I got him figured out now and keep him contained until the morning than back in the steel pin he goes.

Last night at chow time he was trying to escape as I was making the grub for the rest of the boys but good thing one of my guards caught him and put him back into place. I dunno what to do with this guy, he's always keeping me on my very chubby tiny toes.

If it ain't tight it ain't right. I need a pretty tight bun or MANY spin pins for my hair to hold. Especially after a few days.

It has been decided that if we get a club shirt the front will say "I'm not having a bad hairday. I just have Houdini-hair!" The back will say "You can't read this because my hair Houdini-ed out of its bun!"

All of the YES!!! Houdini hair, of course... There is no bun that can hold this escape artist and keep it confined. Not without pulling, tearing and damaging :shudder: I had good luck with the L-finity bun. Once. Then it got slipperier and slipperier (yea 1a hair), and nope. Can't wear them now for more than 5 minutes.

I have yet to try forks, maybe that is the lock my own Houdini won't be able to pick? Do you think my hair keeps picks hidden away the same as Houdini would hide picks in his mouth during escapes?

(Maybe if I found a milk can for my hair...?)

Joining! My hair fits this category to a t. Getting my ends tucked under and staying tucked under is a challenge whenever I wear a bun.

I think it means, hide the ends for two seconds, so that your hair can get warmed up by spitting it out, before giving up and going over to more a more challenging exercise for your hair

My current sleep bun is either a nautilus or lazy wrap postioned way up high like a topknot, and when I tuck in the ends they hold for about 2 seconds before sliding out and fashioning themselves into a sort of 'ends comb-over' type do. Tres sexy......!!

I've called mine Houdini hair for years, lol. My worst aggravation is when it manages to lose the ties off the ends of braids. The silicone ones, pulled as tight as they can - nope. No problem, it slithers right out. It likes to slither out of most any braid except a Dutch, actually. I don't know why, but Dutch braids just hold better!

My hair isn't slippery, but it does throw temper tantrums and goes all Hulk on hair ties, clips, spinpins, bobby pins, etc. I'll just be standing there and "snap/crack/ping!" Whatever was in my hair is now broken and my hair is falling all over the place. Does that count?

Don't hold your breath on forks holding all day. They do hold better than sticks, but we HHs still have to redo buns fairly often no matter the toy.

One of the reasons I never wore my hair up before I joined LHC is my virgin hair was pretty slippery (thus why I didn't learn how to braid before, either). These days my bleached lengths help things hold a little better, but the mane is still a bit escapist at times. I find dutch braids also hold better for me than french do, I think because the hair doesn't have as far to go before it gets braided in. Also a better base for buns that slip less. I will say even a dutch loosens up majorly overnight for me. I just taught myself to do a 5-strand ribbon braid (works like a dutch with a zig-zag of ribbon down the center) and it holds quite tighter than a normal dutch. I wore it overnight and it's still pretty tight and not so mussed I couldn't wear it out if I wanted to. I suppose maybe it's a little like taping a braid down (and a bit of a handful to braid on yourself) but I thought I'd share the observation.

Buns, now. I've yet to find a bun that doesn't need adjusting or re-doing the whole day. Even if the length stays in the bun, the whole thing will eventually slip and turn, and sometimes spit out toys if I don't pay enough attention to it. Doesn't really matter the toy, either.

Hair that slips from nighttime updos, completely spitting out hairtoys? Oh yeah.
Hair that laughs at silk sleeping bonnets as containment. Oh yeah.
Hair that creates its own flopped-out bun within seconds of securing? Oh yeah.
Fat braids from the escapee artist in motion? Yup.
Neck-tickling enders that mean the updo is downward bound. Yup.
Droop and floop? Of course.
The longer from washday, the Houdinier the hair? Tell me about it!

Twisted or braided buns work best for me, and spin pins secured into the stem of a stick or forked updo can help, but aren't a sure-bet. Two sticks are often better than one, although forks (thicker Jeters are da bomb) work better than sticks. Invisibobble-type hairties grab nicely for me, too, where no others compare. When swimming, those (on the end of a braid) and XL flexi-8s (in a high, twisted bun) are the only things that stay put. My layered ends also help when bunning where they wrap a little closer/tighter to the stem.

Chain braid experiment for sleeping last night. Unlike the normal top knot style bun, or Dutch or English braids, everything stayed in! Minimal shred, in fact the braids themselves were decent, only the canopy was slightly mussed. I could have gone out looking slightly wind blown but okay.
This might be my new go to sleep style :D

It's just two rope braids rope braided together, gives very defined braid waves when you take them out as well!

Spin pinned cinibun works well for me. Holds up with just the shorter layers finding freedom by the end of the day.

You can take two chain link (a.k.a. hawser) braids and make a single cable braid by rope braiding the two together. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CN6vViQJBWQ) Supposedly even less likely to fray than the hawser is. The more you know (:

I haven't made a ton of use of my spin pins in the past because my bun wasn't big enough to hide a full-length pin, and I wasn't able to find the shorties in blonde. Maybe I'm long enough my bun will hide them now; I'll have to try it out.

I think some things might be product-dependent too. I tried Shea Moisture's Frizz-taming smoothie today for the first time, and used it as my leave-in underneath gel and my serum. When my hair is dry, I claw-clip it back up on a Sunday. No updo on a wash day, just quick clipping. My hair is sooo ridiculously soft that it actually slid right back out of my big claw clip... I have *never* ever had that happen before. I don't know whether to cheer or be disappointed.

Spin pins will hold for me maybe about an hour or two, tops. Pretty much anything I use to secure my hair has to be readjusted after a couple hours - so since that's the case if I do put my hair up it'll be with a stick. It has the least PITA factor for redoing ;)

I agree on the "easy to redo factor". Forks and sticks are easier than spin pins :)

So... I tried out that bun this morning - seriously unfun. I pretty much never braid so when I do I'm reminded just how much I HATE braiding this delicate, slippery, cobweb hair of mine... I also have the worst combination of physical/personality traits for braiding - teflon hair, layers, strands that resist separating into sections, snapping with the gentlest manipulation, very short arms and tiny fingers, perfectionist tendancies combined with lack of patience for this kind of finicky work, too much laziness to put in the practice and effort required to master braiding, and dissatisfaction with the end result so little motivation to persevere... :p :p :p

That said, I did it. Single dutch braid down the back of my head (taking sections from the sides french braid style), braid tail wrapped around the base with tassel tucked under, everything held together with 3 spins. I braided firmly and drove those spin pins in securely.

10min later I already feel it slipping. In that time I've done nothing more active than to sit in a chair drinking coffee. This hair refuses to be shackled!

I'm guessing I'd need about 17 spin pins, a can of aqua net, a team of specialists and a prayer circle to contain this slippery eel...! :P

Haha, it's slippity indeed! Way too slippity to hold updos decently, and yet ironically not slippity enough to let tangles glide out :p

I've managed to keep this bun in all day so far - it's technically intact although a thing of beauty it is not... I can feel it moving around back there when I shake my head, however I haven't had to resecure it so I suppose that's a win? Except for the way it looks part - that's definitely a fail, hahaha!!! ;)

yes, I cannot keep a stick in unless the bun is very tight or the stick is a spiral. But Forks, sweet forks, 3 and 4 prong forks, especially curved ones that fit the head.....that is a lock that seldom gets picked.

Something I haven't used in donkeys ages that helps with texturising slippy hair is mousse. I just don't like the sticky, grippy feel of it on my hair. Actually, I don't like my hair feeling like it has anything in it after all the gels, mousses and hairsprays it was subjected to in the 80s. Oh, and sometimes a squirt of hairspray on a (plastic or similar) clip can help with hold, although gravity will always send ol' Houdini head south at some point.

My hair tends to slide out of styles a lot, too. Especially when it's freshly washed.
Products play some part, as well, for example, just the right amount of silicones will make my hair ultra smooth and it will slide out of anything.
I think sometimes it's about styles, as well. For example, I used to always wear this braided half-cinnamon half-knot bun (braid wrapped around and ends tucked in), but when the hair got longer than tailbone, it started sliding out no matter what I did. I just had to graduate to a new updo (braided LWB) and that worked for a while, until the hair outgrew it and I had to move to braided L-Infinity... I highly recommend all sorts of braided updos for Houdini hair: the intersections add a bit of much needed grip for hairtoys to hold onto. And a braid made out of a few braids braided together will hold even more securely in an updo, so that's a good option for sports, for example.

Oh, this was great to read! I was really starting to think something was wrong with my hair!

It often slides out of the tie when braided at night. Wash day it has to stay down; days 1 & 2 after washing must be braids or braided buns and those won't stay long. The farther I get from wash day the better it stays, some days it will even last most of the day in a Celtic knot or nautilus, but the only thing I've found to (usually) hold is a braided Ellingwoman bun and even that has to be day 3 or longer.

I constantly have to redo my updos when I get to work, they either don't survive the commute or don't look presentable. I find bobby pins on the floor and I think 'uh, they are probably mine, slip and fell from my head at some point in time'.

Braided updos work kinda okay for me if the braid decides to stay braided... So often I get this humongous braid thing happening as my hair slowly slides out and down, leaving just a few soft bumps of bigness before the final slipperoo. And this includes braided buns as it seems the confined weight of the braid gives gravity the extra nudge. I think the humidity where I am makes things a little too soft and fluid, too.

One trick I find helps a smidge is giving my bun ponytail a full twist to torque the stem before bunning. And along the same lines, twisted updos work better for me than just wrapping (so a Gibraltar bun works better than its non-twisted sister, the LWB).

Absolutely! :agree: I don't like the "idea" of twisting (because I worry about potential breakage) but in practice, I have to twist at least somewhat, even though my bunning is already tight. I actually really like giving the braid(s) a twist where needed (usually at the base) when I'm bunning the braid(s), and this really helps the structure hold. Growing length definitely makes things easier to bun, too, but still, twisting here and there is necessary for me, especially if the hair is freshly washed and slippy.

school of fish
February 18th, 2017, 10:03 AM
Me too - twisting is just a reality for me to anchor anything. I just posted a twisty finishing move I do in the puffed not-ilus thread and it's essential for keeping that bun in place.

My preference would be to not twist because not only to try to minimize mechanical damage but also because it plays up my hair's compressible nature... but it's necessity. That puffed bun does help to visually counteract the shrinkage factor though, which is a big reason why I like it ;)

Not only does my hair slip out of buns, it also in some way manage to "unscrew" the spin pins... Am I the only one noticing that my spin pins is suddenly half way out of the bun?

Yes! This happens to me too!

I mentioned it in once in a thread about anchoring sleep buns and I think some people were a tad disbelieving, not understanding how spin pins could just unscrew themselves :p I think many people just can't conceive of how hair can be this level of slippy if they don't have it themselves, so they assume it has to be some issue of technique... It's a reasonable assumption but if they themselves had this hair they'd understand ;) It does rather defy logic, but it's a thing, even if it's not a massively common thing :)

I own a few spin pins that I break out every so often for some experimenting but I have yet to have a spin pin updo last a whole day so I just don't reach for them. A hairstick has been the solution for me because when it slips (and it always slips :p ) it's the quickest and easiest way to re-establish the bun - can do it in seconds and without a mirror.

I think for me if I want spin pins to anchor an updo effectively it would have to involve hairspray. Actually, maybe I'll try spraying the pins before screwing them in - hmmmm, there's a thought...!

I interlock my spin pins on purpose, maybe that would help you guys with houdini hair types? It makes an extremely sturdy structure, and I can't see how they could unscrew when interlocked.

I agree on the stick updos since it's quick and easy to redo. Forks too.

Maybe we should attach a camera to the back of our heads to prove what Houdini-hair is capable of

Me too! If I spin pin, I usually need to Bobby pin around it too, or it will be about half undone, just like you describe. Braided styles do better for me though, but loose will do this to me too.

Braided hairstyles doesn't really make a difference for me :p

The pic in the first post, I had twisted braids attached with spin pins attached in the dutch braids... The hair escaped and the pins kept screwing them selves out :p

I didn't realise there was a name for this! I've been going through this site and people are so recommending updos for longer hair, but I can't even keep mine in a braid without it slipping out, let alone those lovely, fancy buns. I tried a fork bun once and the ends AND mids just slipped right out. I haven't tried spin pins, though I suppose they'd likely do the same.

It makes me wonder if I'll get a nice shine once my hair is darker again – because I am severely lacking that with the dye at the moment!

Evidently it's pretty easy for spin pins to unscrew and slide out when hair is as slick as ours. Though Amish pins and roller pins stay somewhat longer than screws, there really is no such thing as pins that stay. Besides which, spin pins don't even hold my hair without an auxiliary set of other anchors so I just gave up on 'em.

There's a name for it since a month back  But my hair does hold better now that it's longer. It still slips out but since it passed 30" it stays up for a bit longer :) I also prefer invisiboobles for braids since they are a bit harder for the hair to spit out :p

As much as I prefer sticks or forks, I can't use them when it's cold and I have to wear a winter cap. I'm so looking forward to spring!

Hmm, I don't use spin pins (they look too tiny for my hair to even bother experimenting with), but I have the same problem with sticks/fork that are a bit too small for my bun. They work perfectly well with "frame buns" and half-up structures, but they slide out of some full buns, because of lack of "buffer" space left free on each side. So I wonder, is it possible that spin pins (and U-pins, for that matter) slide out simply because they are too short? :hmm: I heard some people spray spin pins, bobby pins, U-pins, etc with hairspray to give them a bit of grip, but I don't know if that would work for really slippy hair? I just think these small tools are difficult to use on a lot of hair.

On the other hand, what about hair-taping for buns and other updos? I can't secure coronet braids for the life of me with enough claw-clips, etc, even if I start with a few braids on scalp to add some grip... But maybe hair-taping is secure enough for Houdini-hair? :hmm:

Never tried taping because pretty satin ribbon wouldn't work, I'd need something ugly, gnarly, and rope-ish I think, and even then I'm not confident it'd stay. My hair is just a bit past hip, though so maybe longer slick hair might stay better...?

Never used spin pins before, but I noticed the U-pins come out halfway after a few hours. Lately I've been using small claw clips to secure the ends of the bun, they have been doing the job so far.
Braided buns are a disaster unless I oil the hair.

I CO-wash so hairspray isn't an option for me :)

Taping milkmaid braids works quite good for me.

(Straight jacket?)

Fork plus hair to secure it. :) For me, at least. (1B here)

If you are VERY CAREFUL with them, the new silicone hair bands will stay in. They can tear hair on the way out, though. So CAREFUL.

Houdini-hair here as well. Worst just after a wash and calms down the longer I go between washes. Amish hair pins are my goto if I want a somewhat secure updo. The lightness and sturdiness of them mean I can use as many as needed to lock down the hair (that it looks like a porcupine underneath is another story...).

They're from my previous stints on the boards, way back, probably 10+ years. Quick googling seems to find them on Etsy (2" version (https://www.etsy.com/se-en/listing/453436644/amish-made-heavy-duty-2-stainless-steel?ref=market) and 3" version (https://www.etsy.com/se-en/listing/466923941/amish-made-heavy-duty-3-stainless-steel?ref=market)) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Amish-Made-Heavy-Steel-Straight/dp/B00ACC4KPM) (3" version) as well as here (http://www.amishworkshops.com/category/Amish-Hair-Pins-70)(2,5" and 3" versions). You can find even more sellers if you just google "amish hair pins" or "amish hairpins".

I use the 2" version for my hair as it's not overly thick and they just about push through to the other side of the first loop in a cinnabun, which is what I want from a hairpin.

Last night in dance class we worked this one spin, over and over. By spin 6 or 7? Yeah, my braids weren't having it. Weeee let's escape and be free so when she turns, we can FLY! So says left braid, while right braid refuses to be tempted to misbehave.

Spin again, and when I look in the studio mirror? Hair coming loose, braid half out, and elastic missing (was still caught in my hair, but not enough to hold the braid). Spin again. Hair now completely undone on left side, but matching braid is holding on resentfully, watching all the fun on the loose-hair side as I turn, and turn, and turn again (bc stopping to fix my hair mid class is a studio etiquette no-no, unless given a water break).

And all I could think was... Houdini hair, strikes again.

I'm feeling your pain (and good luck!)!

Mine's been the Slipmonster lately, especially at night. NOTHING is staying put, and I'm up every two hours or more re-doing high buns, low buns, braided buns, braids of the English and French variety... you name it, as well as my silk bonnet (that ended up as a pony-bag/snood thingy the next night) that was an absolute fail... I even had my hair braided with a silk scarf, paranda-style, and woke up to an explosion of braid (if it resembled a braid at all), with the end of the scarf still tied off nicely.

:justy: It's tooooooo hot to be wrestling with Medusa-head... Our night-temps barely get down to 25C, although we've had a couple of nights recently down to 22C (just not so much in the house). Winter is coming, though, and maybe the lesser humidity will play better with the monste...mop. :cheese:

Or getting that wakeup jab. :luke: My buns are usually secured with 2 StarLites crossed over, and if one fails, the other isn't far behind. Invisibobbles on braids only work while my hair wants to stay braided, and the XL flexi-8 I used the other night popped open and went for a headstand wiggle. Sticks and forks are a no-go because they slide (and would be stabby), although I used to get some luck with a folded braid threaded with a short acrylic stick when my hair was shorter. And spin pins slip and tangle. The big worry is heading to the toilet during the dark of night with an on-its-way-down hairdo, feeling the hairnest for the wayward hairtoy before it drops--in the bed, or along the way, or in the loo, or wash basin...

The thing that works best for sleeping with is for me a paranda. Even if half of the hair escapes, it's not completely loose. It's just lots of loose strands pooking out everywhere :p

Yesterday morning I thought to myself: 'hehe, I haven't had hair accidents / exploding buns lately, I think I can get away just a LWB with one hair stick and U-pins'. So I went to the lunch room at work, mid-way during my meal I felt that the bun was coming off. I had the choices: redo my hair in front of everyone, leave my food and go to the restroom fix my hair, or hope the bun stays in place until I finish eating and leave the lunch room. I chose the last option. As soon as I was almost done with my lunch break and about to leave, my hair stick fell on the floor. Nobody paid too much attention, maybe they thought it was a chopstick. Funny thing, something similar happened a year ago, in the same place.

Today at work, my hair was up in a hairstick bun, and whilst I was in the middle of a fiddly procedure, the stick slipped out and my hair fell everywhere. Nightmare! Normally I bobby pin the ends of my hair which helps with buns to stay, but I risked a no pin bun today because I thought I finally had the length to pull it off. Apparently not....

Beautiful even if it is trying to escape! I'm wondering, I this the style where you wrap the tails in a figure-8 around the base of the braids on either side & pin (I think TorrinPaige did a video on it)? My hair has been refusing to do anything but slip out of updos lately and I'm thinking I might try this once I'm done enjoying having my hair down+curled.

My hair being in this club is part of the reason why I cut it after my last growth attempt. It was BSL, but no matter what toys I used or if it was day old hair or more, my hair would slip out of anything I tried. Could only manage french twists and sort of buns if my hair was pulled super tight, causing migraines, and then ended with a desperate cut to cure of the migraines DX Hopefully I will learn my lesson this time.

Houdini-hair strikes again. Was out with hubby running errands when it decided to spit out the hairstick I was wearing and the whole length came tumbling down. Ah well, not much to do other than twist it back up and secure again. Not even sure the surrounding people had time enough to notice. :D

Lenght helps here too. It still slips out, but not as easy as when it was shorter. I think that it will continue to improve as it grows longer :)

My hair get's more slippery when its newly washed and it stays newly washed for 5-7 days. After that it still isn't dirty but not newly washed anymore and behaves a little better. When I'm closing in on 2-3 weeks it behaves a lot better. Every time it's newly washed I countinue to tell my self "I never wanna wash my hair again"! But I have to wash it when it's dirty and then it starts again

I guess mine's a wavy texture/tropical weather/low porosity thing, because mine's at its grippiest when it's frizzy and struggling to get rid of the water after being washed. After that day, it's all slipsville as it gets sleeker, less curly and compacts more.

As for Houdini's latest trick, I was trying out a screwy Lady Idun Unicorn hair stick for the first time, and everything went south pretty quickly. I guess I was expecting it to twist on in and be rock solid, but it made itself a biggish pocket of zero-screwness and my hair started to unravel under the weight. I tried a few buns and found it holds best in a Baby Helix or the Figure 8 I do like the Helix, but with a reversed tail swoop. Counter-weight ftw. And yeah, I can just slide that stick out, whereas my Crockett Mountain spirals have to be unscrewed. Sometimes it's all down to the equipment (and picking days when Houdini is snoozing).

Yes my hair is hard to manage because it slips out of everything - braids, pins, clips, claws, scrunchies, everything. My ficcare falls out and tugs on my hair. The only thing that helped so far are a claw and a buff :(

Count me in! It drives me nuts!!! I have a normal amount of hair, but, each strand is so fine & slippery that any type of hair tie, clip, barrette or elastic eventually slides right out, or the hair starts slipping. At this length with my hair (20" from front hair line to ends) I have given u on any updos. After a couple of hours, so much of it has slipped out that I look like a crazy cat-lady. NOT very chic. Hairspray is out, & I refuse wrap those coated elastics tightly, or use 100 bobby pins, so loose it is, with my outgrown ex-bangs clonked behind my ears.

Mine is pretty Houdini when it's clean. Unless I curl it! Then it has some grip (and the curls will stay for a billion years if I let them, I'm sure). I was practicing some braids today, and was having quite the time of it. I just washed last night, so today is really the worst day for me to practice any sort of style. If I pull it really tight (which I hate, it makes my scalp sore) then it'll stay alright on day 1, but otherwise I just leave it down!

I can sometimes keep it in a wrap bun plus stick but braids are not safe, ponytails are not safe, the ends escape everything so I'm rocking messy buns no matter how they go up. Any style is also subject to migrating down to the nape unless I put it up damp, even then its only a small chance it'll stay.

I absolutely love the title of this thread and everyone's sense of humor!!!! :D

I only have trouble with Houdini hair occasionally, most often tries to escape during gymnastics, swimming and other exerting activities! I sometimes wonder if it will ever learn to behave! It seems to especially enjoy showing off its escaping abilities in public for the whole world to see! I'm not sure if this counts, since it is more individual hairs, but what I have trouble with the most each day is the little frizzles and curls escaping here and there making my bun look like a big lumpy birds nest, so even though it feels like it is all together, when I come to the mirror I find my bun an awkward frizzy rolled up mess. xD

My hair fits this category too  One of the most memorable instances at work, I was wearing two dutch braids. At the beginning of an emergency situation, one of the braids got caught on a client who was flailing about, the elastic snapped, the braid unravelled, and for the next half hour I rushed around with half my hair up and the other hair flouncing around. My short-hair male colleagues had no sympathy for my plight...

I haven't danced in years and yet I still cringe about the time my bun came oose while doing turns across the floor and I dropped because the ends whipped my eyeball. The instructor was ecstatic because apparently it was a perfect spin and the force necessary to throw off the elastic holding the twist bun in place was good.

Oh yes, this is me!! My friend who has wavy and semi-coarse hair recently braided my hair just for fun and it was a bit of a struggle for her because she is unused to hair trying to escape and slip out of the braid pattern with every turn. That's okay though, I think that once it is up this type of "Houdini" hair looks pretty because the silkiness also usually means shine and the fine strands can make the braid patterns more evident than I think they are on thicker or coarser strands. So some reward for the struggle in putting up our type of hair?

I was just thinking about this thread this morning! I too have found a method to keep my hair staying up longer - mini claw clips! I'd tried them previously with no success but this time I tried shoving 8 of them around the coils of a cinnabun and it seems I just wasn't using enough before ;)

I'm still going to keep wearing my hair down most of the time but this is useful knowledge for me for times when I'm doing floor stretching and I need to keep my hair securely secured :D

Yeah, she did eventually prevail, but it was with much annoyance and we resorted to adding dry shampoo at the top and oil at the bottom to give it some more grip.

As for flexis, I also think that center-held buns work best with them. Of course, center-held buns work best in generally for my Houdini hair and cinnabuns, rose buns, and the like usually need to be done on my hair once I'm a few days into my wash cycle and have oiled the ends so that there is something to help my hair grip to itself. First day hair is....difficult to put up.

My hair is still pretty houdini, and it's Wednesday. It's better than it was, I was even able to hold a peacock twist for a little bit yesterday, but it only lasted like an hour before it slipped out. My hair is slippery enough without this!

But on the other hand my hair has been so soft I could cry

This is one reason I really like parandas, the yarn of the paranda gives my hair more grip once it's braided in, so coiled buns hold better. Of course I also have thick hair so said buns are slightly ridiculously big, but that's okay. I like how they look and as my lab doesn't care what I do with my hair provided it can't get caught on fire, in machinery, or swing into chemicals, it doesn't matter. :)

I Gibraltar bun (twisted lwb) with XL flexis for swimming and they're the only hairtoys that keep my hair contained comfortably and well, even underwater. The only other hairtoys that work for me when my hair is wet (in the shower to keep my hair out of the way of washing da bod) is Crockett Mountain spirals that have to screw into and out of my buns, but the length resists uncomfortably in underwater swimming, so flexis it is!

my hair poofs like crazy when humid outside. donīt even think about combing or brushing it... but my hair loves leave-ins. thereīs no stopping flyaways though...
my hair has a mind of his own: it gets greasy and flat on the scalp. sometimes in a week, sometimes just after few hours from washing it. it poofs from chin length to the ends when humid outside and thereīs no way I can blow dry my mane. it poofs more. thatīs why my hair likes leave-ins.
my hair sometimes pretends itīs curly, so I always think I will stay at waist length forever. some other times it pretends to be fine and straight and breakable. I doscovered that I can measure my hair (somewhat?) correctly only on wash day.
so I think I qualify.

It murders elastics, and I only use those for braids, the layers I must have in my hair to avoid triangle head, ensure I only ever sleep in braids because my braids start shredding after five minutes. Three day hair simply does not believe in staying in buns so it's always a three or four bun day. I made the mistake of going bra shopping with it down. I really don't know what I was thinking.

This is my hair! I have houdini hair and recently bought spin pins to try, and they are the worst at holding it up. I'll think my bun is pretty solid and then bam it completely falls apart in seconds. No warning.

I always have to redo everything. My slippery wispies come out of French braids. Nothing stays in overnight. I think I need to just get a satin pillowcase and quit even trying to put my hair up at night.

Yes, spin pins are useless to me. They don't even bother attempting to feel secure for a moment. The only time I may not have to redo a bun is when it's French-braided to the end, twisted, and then secured with a 4 or 5-prong fork.

I was just thinking about this today! I did a braid and within thirty minutes, I had strands of hair trying to slip out everywhere!
That and the horrible time I did my wedding hair trial. The lady put so much hairspray(super horrible for my hair and shouldn't have done, but..) and bobby pins in it, and it still found a way to slip out in a little less than two hours.

Oh. My. Gosh. I'm dying!!!

Thanks! I was amused by it, but it was a joint effort in naming. My friend was trying to put up my hair and said it was like a living thing how it slithered out of things but not a nice cute one, like some kind of demon monster. We naturally settled on the Kraken being in high school at the time and easily entertained.

   But Kraken knows how to release itself

Yes, yes it does. Less so with some oiling and a few days away from washing, but still yes, it does it's best to escape. Especially at inopportune moments like in the middle of grocery shopping at the butcher counter or while cooking. Oh well. :)

I feel my hair's motto is I do what I want.

Kraken is a great name for hair!

Thanks!! My hair might agree with that statement.

For those struggling with sticks or buns in general slipping out, I've found that length helps as do center held buns such as the nautilus, knot bun, and the pretzel bun. I also like using a paranda braided in because the yarn gives my hair a bit more grip for pins to hold onto. Good luck guys!!

My hair learned a new trick today after I kept putting back the escaped tail into my bun... It learned how to open a flexi and it was so fun that it had to do it one more time!

My hair isn't very slippery (at least when compared to my own hair before my hairtype change) but lately it's been very escapey. I am starting work soon, and I absolutely will need to start using styling products again to keep my hair neat and tidy all day.

I've recently been able to do a Celtic Knot bun fairly consistently now that my hair is a bit longer (thickness issues), and find it holds like a rock. I'd highly recommend it for the rest of you Houdiniers!

Otherwise, like ani mentioned, centrehelds of the loopy and knot variety work fairly well. I tend to split my ponytail with my fingers and do wrap and knot buns twice or thrice over with maybe one of those loops rotated towards the other side of my head for skewering, depending on how many times I split the pony, which adds to their staying power by spreading the load.

^ It looks great on you, Crystawni! :D Sadly, I can't really do the Celtic Knot bun - the loop I'm trying to pull through gets huge and bulky and impossible to pin down.

Argh, darn slippery hair... So I've been trying to do the Nessa bun (by Haartraum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NepoivO6N8&feature=youtu.be by torrinpaige: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIOHqwL7CiY), which is supposed to be like a simplified and vertical version of the Nautilus bun and seems great. But even though I started it with a tight braid (like I do with all buns), it somehow slid downwards and the stick rotated all the way down and wouldn't hold anymore. I think it's because that surface area where the loop and the base connect is vertically placed and rather long. But this is supposed to be one of the better holding buns out there...
Does anybody have any tricks for keeping it all in place with this bun?

Needless to say, I'm in a bit of a rut in terms of styles at the moment, as I'm only willing to try hair-friendly styles. So I'm sticking to the braided L-Infinity at all times for lack of other options. (My fave - the braided LWB slides down on me at the moment.)

I have Asian hair:
Cowlicks in the morning
Straight on my scalp
Frizzy hair that needs a leave-in
Fine, which people confuse it with thin
Not making a super thick pony but
Can't get the tiny amount of shampoo/conditioner trough every strand
Slippery aka silky
Shiny
Dark brown
Not holding a style: blowout easily to be ruined by the wind, fluffed-up hair to fall flat in half an hour.

Haha have I missed something?

Recent mishaps of my slippery hair:
1) I was crossing the street and my hair fork fell from my bun (the bun was already getting loose as my day went by). Luckily I was able to retrieve it while the light is still green for pedestrians.
2) Also while walking home, I notice a bobby pin is missing. Ah, it’s on the sidewalk!
3) I felt something fluffy suddenly tickling my neck. A mouse? A squirrel? They were my hair ends that escaped the clips that were holding my cinnabun all day.

I'm at an awkward length for my houdini hair, just past apl, and I have some layers, but lately nothing stays in and it's getting frustrated. Last month I quit doing ponytails because I'm trying to see if I'm getting breakage from them, but I'm getting so tempted to go back. Claw clips aren't working because it's getting too long, and neither of my forks are working. Any suggestions?

No matter how tight I make them, buns with forks and sticks don't even last me walking across the room. I do buns with this fork-cage-clip hybrid, it holds in place for maybe an hour or two. Meh. Don't even get me started on spin pins and bobby pins. Let's just say that if I was Gretel, Hansel would not need to throw breadcrumbs to mark the way home

We Houdini hairs all relate. The best anchors for me are curved forks with lots of prongs, wavy if possible. Very rarely do I see any available though. When I say best, I mean re-dos are limited to three or four times a day as opposed to the pin/stick route markers.

I'm postponing my hair wash with an extra couple of days, since I plan to touch up the color with henna and indigo. It means that my hair is starting to get a big greasy (I easily hide it in updos) and for me it means that it behaves so much better. I've put my hair in twin rope braids to coax some texture into it for a photoshoot I'm doing tonight - man that was a fight!

I've altered slightly my routine recently which has increased the overall slipity-slip of my hair... it has however reduced the cobwebby aspect of it, so it's worth the trade-off in that respect :) But OMG...! The amount of finger grip I have to use to keep my hair from slipping my grasp as I form the twists is actually painful! Like, really painful! Like, I'd-rather-go-to-the-dentist painful!

These rope braids look atrocious :p They're crazy shreddy and they feel pretty unstable even though I torqued the living daylights out of them as I formed them - houdini effect ;) They'll serve their purpose though, and that's all that matters.

I tip my hat to anyone who braids as part of their general styling! My hair and my hands were not made for it ;)

I've altered my routine in the last few weeks - I've been combing my conditioner through my hair as I rinse it out to make sure it's rinsing out fully. As a result, my hair is so slippery that no updo holds, none. My sleep bun is undone every morning because my hair spits out the stick in the night... every morning for 3 weeks now...

The upshot is that this method seems to have reduced my hair's cobwebby tendancies, and sectioning now feels like an option or at least a possibility... but the slippiness is off the charts!!!

Isn't this the truth, that your hair decides for you what it wants to do? I guess that's what I get for treating it like an exotic pet. Thanks to the weekly DT, mine won't stayed back in a hairband unless I clip the heck out of it, too thick for the volume barrette, too layered to stay in a proper braid, the list goes on. Lately, it just wants to stay down, but today it wanted to be wound up in the one Ficcare I own.

This thread has been a highly amusing read. Last time my hair was this length I managed okay, but now it's mostly natural (not henna-cassia) it's so much more slippery. I can cope with cinnabuns with claw clips and spin pins (like Arctic I interlock the spin pins, which helps a lot), but that's really just about it. This was when it was semi dry, a bit damp. If I let it dry it will just dry into the style and hold. If I break out and run it’ll fall down, but just walking or turning my head it’ll stay.

If it’s a bit too damp it’ll fall down immediately.

Yes, they hold fine for me. I have all the sizes to use in many different styles, with pics in the Flexi thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=17757) showing them. A clear silicone hairtie wrapped around the stick also helps them to grab if your hair is being a PITA, or the hairtie wrapped under the flexi (with the stick going through the hairtie) adds security.

Day-to-day, waist was way less upkeep, because I just kept it bunned with spin pins all the time. No such thing as a bad hairday when you can comb it back and forget about it, haha! Had to redo the bun a couple of times a day maybe, but by the time I got to waist there was enough hair that I could at least somewhat secure it in simple buns with the right toys. But chin obviously requires less effort and time on wash days, especially drying, and you don't have to think about damage so much because the ends get cut before they get all that damaged. Keeping it out of your face, though, ugh...

Yeah, my hair grows forward, so it's constantly in my face if not contained. And if it's windy, all you can do at chin is either find your zen or put on a hat. :p Oh, it also tangled a lot less. Not at all, actually. And it was easier to make my curls look good, though at 1c that won't be an issue for you, obviously. The complete chaos that is my curl pattern is a pretty hopeless case at this stage, so I usually comb my hair before it's completely dry and go wavy instead.

Curls and waves look particularly cute in a bob! Maybe the reason I don't remember it going into my eyes is because last time it was that short, I had very thick bangs (which sort of solves that problem, but come with other issues).

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I think I will reconsider getting a cut, since it sounds very much like you do notice it is there with shorter hair :p

A fellow LHCer, BrownEyedSusan, gave me a huge tip that has tamed my hair escapes. Per her instructions, I took my U pins and squeezed them in a LOT so they are quite narrow, maybe only a half inch gap between tines, and they hold like a rock now. I use 3. I just cannot tell you the difference it has made for me.

Another thing I do is to bun damp (with scalp hair dry) and sometimes spritz hairspray to really hold all day long. I refuse to redo my buns all day.

Also, a stick bun secured with spin pins helps, but without damp/hairspray, they will still come loose. Spin pins alone only hold my hair with lots of hairspray and about 7 pins. Ugh.

After I hit classic, I had nothing but superHoudini problems with ALL buns. Experience suggests that after a bit of growth I may be able to do something else with it than my Desperation bun, but for now that's what I use every single uninspired day.

My hair is fine and shiney. I do up-dos on the second or third day after washing. That helps.

Oh yeah, I need to be a member of this club.

Here was my first ever LWB that I successfully accomplished:

And then those ends fell right out five seconds later......

SAME! And I thought I was the only one who just can't get LWB to stay, it's so popular around here. I did mine quite tight, went to the store which is like 5 minutes from my house and it fell apart already on my way there :justy:

Practice makes perfect! I love seeing this picture now, because I've definitely improved, at least a little bit! :grnbiggri

Trying different variations, like using three fingers instead of my whole hand, etc. really helped me improve the tightness and hold throughout the day. I still haven't managed to get it nice and tight with sticks compared to forks, but using a ponytail elastic as a base before bunning it helps a lot, even if it feels like cheating.

My hair is so slippery now after wcc I had to ponytail it, then braid it and at last bun it.
Now I understand a bit what they mean with "heavy hair". The ponytail sags and rips off hair eventually.
But I am the living proof that voluminous buns are possible with fine, slippery and long hair.

My updos stay in pretty well but when it comes to texture manipulation my hair escapes any shape it's supposed to hold within a matter of 30min.

My sleep buns are exploding nightly - every morning I wake up with my hair stick spit out onto the pillow and my hair unraveled.

Yesterday claw clips didn't work either but u-pins did. Let's see what I'll have to do today...

I'm not sure if my hair is turning Houdini or not but it's getting very slippery, and frequently spits out forks. Sticks gently slide out of it. Before, this only happened on wash day or the day after wash day. Now it's happening on day three or day four or just some random day.

Claw clips are fine. Pony tails sag. Braids sag even when I try to make them tight. Spin pins mostly stay in, and stay in place but U pins don't always manage to. Forks, and sticks are a hit or miss. Hair ties slide off the ends of braids to the point where I don't bother with securing my sleep braids anymore.

Is this Houdini hair?

Yesterday I was able to contain this escapist on a LWB the day after wash day, with a stick!!!! I still can't believe that I'm able to use a stick on clean hair haha.

so there's a name for it, huh... neat. My hair Henri Papillons it within twenty minutes of me putting it in a clip or a tie of any sort. It also can't hold a curl to save my life.

I think I read somewhere that undamaged/healthy hair is more likely to not cooperate with styling? Its vitality just makes it strong and springy, and it'll spring right out of whatever you put it in, whereas damaged, weak hair just gives up and stays where you put it

There's a difference between healthy hair too. Some people can have their healthy hair up without any problems and others have hair like silk - Houdini-hair that slips out of anything. But it gets a bit easier with length.

Yay! And thank you. I think xD =P

I'm managing to contained just washed hair in a quattro fork! Though, when I went out for an appointment earlier, I was using a ficcare, and it just kept sliding, and tugging on my hair D: I had to readjust it so many times.

M3DUS4 I have damaged hair (boxed dyes), and I still have slippery hair.

I made milkmaid braids last week and they stayed in place quite well, thanks to "a few" u pins and one amish pin...

I think people with wave/curl have an advantage as well... more places for the hair to catch against itself rather than sliding.

that's a shame... quattro forks sound like a fabulous idea. I might buy one tbh

Hello and count me in. My bun's (even a disc bun) have to be redone once or twice a day! OOf! Didn't realize this was a problem so many others had. Braids have to be redone as well as whatever I tie them off with just slips out over time!
