Just like the title says,

How do you wear long hair with hats?
I'm getting that "cape" look, and I want ideas.

:couch: I'm starting to want to cut back to bsl because of it.

I don't really wear hats. I wear cowls mostly and when I do wear them, I usually wear my hair up in a bun. The cowl allows me to wear hairtoys without disturbing my hairstyle.

I made a big loose crocheted hat that fits over a bun. Sometimes I just use a big scarf cowl-like. Otherwise I do my hair in braids, like with my wide-brimmed hat that I wear for hiking.
I really don't leave my hair down with hats.
Earmuffs and similar also work with buns.

Very low bun, usually. Sometimes a braid.

I love love hats!! I have been collecting them. Are we speaking of winter hats in specific? Or any hat? My favourite type of hat to wear during the colder seasons is a beret hat. I have slowly been collecting different colors of them, and I prefer 100% wool, since they are warm for winter, though I might like to find some cotton ones for warmer weather. I braid my hair in a side braid, then wrap it into the beret around my head as I put it on, and it is quite comfortable. :)

Any hat will do :)
I even have a wool wide brimmed hat for winter and a crochet winter hat I made.

I braid and wrap around my head. I have found a scarf tied over the braids helps keep shredding to a minimum so I don't have to keep redoing the braids during the week. On the other hand, my sister does high buns up on top of her head. Depends on where you position the style and what sort of hat you are wearing too.

And for winter I have a beanie made specially with extra bun room and the lady who made it kindly lined it with silk for extra hair protection.

Braids were about the only thing that worked, once my bun got too big to fit under the brim. Before that, infinity buns worked well.

I hope that my hair will resemble a cape in the future. :p

Ahh, alright! :D

Those sound like very nice hats!!

I usually do some sort of low braid style for most summer hats or such, like these:

Or a low bun style

But it really depends on the type of hat on what style you can do, like with more vintage style hats, Gossamer's Eternal roll style works wonderfully!

I put my hair in a braid or two and slap a hat on. :)

Another braider.
I do have winter hats that include space for a bun.

I use headbands. Covers my ears, but doesn't interfere with hair.

I made headbands in various colors. In the pic below, the pink shows the back of a headband. The blue shows the front of a headband and a pair of wristlets to go with it. Also scarves to match, sometimes plain straight ones, sometimes circle ones. I can wear my usual updo with these bands.

In the past my go-to (and I live in the desert so I wear hats almost 100% of the time), was a bun and a baseball cap. The opening at the back of the cap allows room for the bun to stick out. However, I am looking for a new method as this doesn't protect my hair from the sun's rays. (Nor the sides of my face).

I've never been able to wear a low bun with a wide brimmed hat. The bun always rubs on the collar or the hat and it turns into a mess. If the bun is too high the hat doesn't fit on snuggly and blows off in the wind. Or if the bun is too low then I get rubbing on collars.

What I need is a hat with enough room in the top that I can do a top bun. It's hard to find hats with room on top.

Braids always turn into a tangled mess. Having hair rubbing on my clothing causes tangles for me.:)

Sorry, ...for running, I'll often do a mid head ponytail and braid down the length then a baseball cap. This is super easy but again, doesn't protect the length from the sun. Still, baseball hats are hard to beat in terms of comfort for an active lifestyle.:p

I'm another for usually wearing a braid, but I have a knit hat that can fit a bun under it in winter.

I wear slouchy beanie style hats in winter so they fit over a bun, or I have a wool headband if I want to show my hair. I don't wear any hats in summer (it is rarely necessary with the weather here anyway) I don't suit baseball caps or truckers etc.

I have several big baggy knit/crocheted caps that I use basically as a snood in winter....dump the length into the hat and go. :) Other times I'll do a french braid, especially with summer hats.

How do I wear my hair with rats?

I don't like rats, they get my hair greasy instantly. I only wear winter rats when it gets too cold to go without. And it is braided. Or bunned because I have a very poofy rat.

Wow! Thank you for the support.
I think a bun would look very classy with a hat :)

Bunned low almost always works. Sometimes a small bun or French twist is fine even under a brim. I have also hats with a cutout perhaps for pony tails that I can adjust for buns. So far it seems those will still be useful for several years.

I grew my hair precisely for this reason, to wear brimmed hats and avoid direct sunlight so as not to get Hat Hair. Have fun experimenting!

I like my woolly hats, but I also always wear my hair up in a bun, so that "cape" thing is never an issue for me.

Can I ask why you don't do updos?

I pretty much always wear a braid with hats. Leaving it loose gets my hair all matted on the top, even if I'm only wearing the hat for a little while. And buns don't usually fit under my hats as I like them to fit pretty snugly on my head.

We seem to have the same hair type. Thick and straight af. Typically, I wear it backwards. I tuck it in sometimes, but not most of the time. I make sure my ears are kind of poking out because when I wear hats, I hate it when my hair is sitting on my ear. I wear it forwards as well and I put it in a bun sometimes.
