Hi everyone, I have a dilemma. I need bun suggestions for my ultra thick hair. My ponytail circumference is 6" (yes I know) and almost waist stretched. How long does my hair need to be to account for thickness and be able to do stick buns?

I bet you could do a lovely French twist even if other types of updos are too difficult. Best of luck with whatever you try!

Try a disc bun. There are tutorials on youtube.

That's really thick! Honestly, I'd start by trying to bun hair in a half-up, then wrap the bottom half around. And do try the Disc Bun -- normally it's one of the first ones people can do. It was a bit absurd with my long and very compactable hair, but it should work well with very thick hair.

Yep, 6 inches is a lot. I'm 4.25 inches, was 4.5 but... yeah, age does that to you, I guess. I had to wait to waist/hip (more like hip) to do a LWB (lazy wrap bun). And that is a center-held bun so you can do that one pretty quickly. I'm guessing a peacock twist or French twist might be great for you at this stage! :)

I agree about starting with a half up and then wrapping the rest of your hair around it. This can help by reducing the thickness that you're starting your bun with.

Sectioned buns are the way to go. I have 5.25 hair and am shorter than you at BSL stretched. Also, have you tried doing two buns stacked one on top of the other?

Two (like mentioned above), three .... how ever many smaller buns. I love this look, the buns can be of any type, and you can arrange them in any way you wish.

Disc bun should work with a stick. You could try a seashell bun too, but that might work better with pins. There's a lwb ponytail as well that's pretty cool!

3 strand disc bun should work even earlier than the 2 strand (common) version.

At what length were you able to do a majority of buns?

Hip is do-able, but TBL is more comfortable, I'd say TBL-classic length; but I stick to a LWB most of the time.

My long term goal is currently Hip/TBL, maybe I should shoot for classic for the buns? lol
