Was your hair before you could start doing fun buns and braids and start using hair toys like sticks and forks? I'm at shoulder length and am really looking forward to learning some new hairstyles! Just curious how much longer I'll likely have to wait (patience is hard)!

Shoulder length is too short, honestly it is. :flower: You might manage a half-up.

On top of that it all depends on the thickness of your hair, whether you're i, ii, or iii. With iii hair, I needed to wait to waist/hip to do a bun (LWB, lazy wrap bun).

So the first thing you need to do is to measure your ponytail circumference, so you can calculate where you are.

There is photographic evidence of me playing around with my hair twisted up and hairtoys shoved in what sort of resembled proper buns when my hair was just about like this length in July of 2012.

Could do a non thumb wrap LWB during the same season. I am a 3" ponytail circ.

I could do a dutch braid while it was still pretty short, but nothing with forks, etc until APL. I'm a ii hair type.

My ponytail is 3.5" and I have medium hair.

My first hairtoys were flexi-8s and I would do a tails-up peacock twist. You might be able to do those.

When my husbands hair is freshly trimmed it's about shoulder length, and iii thickness, and I can just about do a dutch/french braid on him. It's not a lof of hanging braid, I usually just stop the braid at the nape of the neck and make a ponytail and shove that underneath the braided part so it looks like a tucked french braid :)

You can definitely start practicing french and dutch braids (you might do best splitting your hair down the middle and making twin braids for now) and maybe even crown braids if your hair isn't too slippery. Peacock twists, held with a claw clip, are another option. Possibly even a bit of a french twist. SilVousPlaits (https://www.youtube.com/user/silvousplaits) on YouTube has hairstyle tutorials that list the length required, and some of them are as short as collarbone which you're close to so you might be able to start doing some of the fancy stuff fairly soon!

I was able to start doing a disc bun held with a stick and a cinnabun/bee butt bun held with spin pins when my hair was somewhere between 22 and 25 inches from the front hairline to the bottom. I have very slippery hair, though, so I need a lot more length than others with the same hair type to do the same styles. Some of the most common suggestions for early buns (the lazy wrap and the nautilus) I had trouble with until my hair was past 30 inches from the front hairline. You may be able to do them a little sooner if your hair isn't as slippery.

I would think you could also do a french twist or peacock twist with a fork. It would have to have 3 or more prongs to work though.

I have very layered hair (chin-BSL) and am only now able to start doing French/Dutch braids, sectioned buns and maybe two buns. I have to use two claw clips though. I'm iii thickness, though.

You could do a waterfall braid, a peacock twist, and French twist, and possibly French braid if you don't have too many layers.

Thank you for all the feedback! I'll start practicing some braids. I'm not very good at braiding so now may be a good time to start practicing.

I think I could do this!

Yes, like WD, I loved wearing a peacock twist; I wore mine while my hair grew out to waist/hip (folding it under as it grew).

I could do a peacock twist just pre APL with a stick or fork. Not much else though! Flexi 8 and ficcare with French braid and folded up to make a bun also worked. My hair is iii. Now BSL and peacock twist is a no go anymore, cinnibun with pins and disc bun with a stick are go tos. Ficcare also still holds, but my flex 8s are now to small.

I was around shoulder-APL when I could finally put it up in a peacock twist. That was pretty much all I could do though. I have around a 2.5 inch thickness. When it got a little longer, APL-APL+, I could do a spidermom bun variation with a hairstick. It's good for short hair and thinner short hair too.

Maybe this might work even in a halfup?
If your hair is shorter, there's a cheater version of Spidermom's bun that I found to be secure. Bunch your hair in a like making a ponytail, then wrap it all around one or two fingers. Wrap the majority of the hair around the base of the ponytail, tucking your ends in when finished. Then, feel the hair wrapped around your fingers. Split it in half (I use a stick) and push the stick down in the middle of the loop. Wiggle it through the center of the bun, then pull the other half of the hair in your fingers down and stick the stick up through that loop. It's like having a flexi-eight made of your own hair.

There are so many cute styles you can do at shorter lengths. Look on youtube for tutorials.
I loved doing braided styles when my hair was shorter. I still like doing braids now but they were much easier on shorter hair.
Also peacock twist with a flexi is really cute on short hair.

I managed a tiny little low bun today with a pair of spin pins that a friend gave me years ago. It kinda made my day and I'm looking forward to rocking it!

You're really close.
I could do a disc bun at collar-bone length, and a LWB, not too much later. :)
