Wow--we're big time now--someone is on the Mane Forum suggesting that we are "ruining the atmosphere of the LHC and diluting" the purity of a long hair forum, and maybe should be exiled to our own subforum.

We are such trouble makers. I actually think that the holiday crankies are a bit late this year. ;)

I did see that Shell, but what I noticed the most was that you said you had been here for 14 years! I joined only one month after you so its very hard to believe I have been a member for 14 years. Wow! And just like you, my hair has been "long" and short and lengths in between. I honestly love how accepting the forum has become of shorter hair and different styling. It was very different back when I first joined. I didn't even feel like I could post because my hair was short. Anyway, glad to be over here with the rest you troublemakers. :p

 I started with long hair, but it got shorter over the years. Congrats on your being here for 14 years too! Remember the "treat your hair like antique lace" thing? I was never that serious about all of this--it is just hair after all. :scared:

I do think there is quite a lot of significance to your first big cut after finding LHC and taking the advice here to heart. For some of us, finding that length range we are happiest at is a milestone in itself, and it may well be shorter than your original goal.

After growing my hair to classic, I decided that medium-length makes me the happiest, so these days I loiter around at BSL-hip. As much as I loved classic length, things like washing and drying, as well as the heaviness on my neck got too much for me. I also missed wearing my hair down and generally being carefree about my hair.

Recently I got thick bangs cut in and enjoy it even more! I felt so nervous when I saw all of the hair falling into my lap, but also quite proud that I am willing to take risks with my hair again.

That said, I can understand why some people would find it annoying to have a special interest board being bombarded with something else. I don't think that is really the case at all with LHC and short-haired people, but I have found the same thing in other groups. It's only really a problem when it gets in the way of what you originally wanted to discuss, in my view.

Thanks Shell! Oh yes, I remember the antique lace thing. It was something I never managed to follow. Of course I never had super long hair either.

I made the mistake of going to read it. I think I’m going to hide for a while here in a safe place. That actually hurt to read, especially being a newbie.

I'm sorry you're feeling bad :( I honestly do not believe that most here think that shorter haired people are "diluting" or harming TLHC any way. The OP of that thread never suggested that there needs to be some minimum hair length limit for joining, it was mostly just speculating and nothing personal. I think some just wish that super long hair would be more discussed and the threads dedicated to them were more active too. Older members may also miss the dawn of this forum when there were less people in general and focus was solely in super long hair (I think). It must have been special time for them. Reading that thread weirded me out a little because it was sorta implied that older members and members with super long hair should receive more respect here or something, or at least that's the vibe I got. That there should exist some kind of hierarchy among the people here (even a badge system has been suggested). This is the first time I have seen this kind of discussion here and it bothers me to see people being pitted against each other. Keep your head high DaniGirl!

DaniGirl and Bergamot, I have been on these boards a long, long time--trends and attitudes come and go. We've gone through tolerant and intolerant periods, periods of "love everybody," and periods of super crankiness. We are a family--with both the good and bad elements of that. So, please don't feel offended, and stick around--we need old timers and newbies.

And yes, much that was said in that thread hurt my feelings too--that's why I'm resolving to not check back into it. :scared:

I've never felt overly welcome here as I've never had long hair and have a tendency to spontaneously cut. Often my posts are ignored and my advice overlooked.

I actually came here looking for henna advice and just stuck around. The things I've learned about hair care is invaluable but I am sick of the elitist attitude displayed by many members.

I will continue to come here but need to reduce how often, its just feeling too toxic. IDK, maybe its just me as I'm not a overly friendly person and can't get into the joking and familiarity aspect of many forums.

I thought the premise was kind of weird. We've got threads on blonde, brunette, red, henna, all kinds of things, but the people who have short hair aren't supposed to have their own threads to discuss topics relative to them?

I think the part that upset me the most is that I’m new, I’ve been here about a month. So I try to read as much as I can without asking questions. Because odds are someone has asked it already. But I’m new I’m still going to ask questions. My hair is also short, I’m growing out an undercut. Some parts of my hair are an inch long. I eventually want to get my hair to a place where I can grow for length. But I also need to look polished for work and growing for length like this wouldn’t do that.

I’m happy maintaining my length and getting my hair in a happy healthy place before I go for length. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with that. You have to trim the damage out one way or another.

I actually felt really accepted here right up until I read that thread. I shouldn’t have even opened it. I know myself and my anxiety cycles and I knew it wouldn’t be good and I did it anyway. That’s on me really.

I do remember when I first joined a long time ago that there was no super shorties thread. I lurked for quite a while before I felt " worthy" to join. Then it seemed like if your hair wasn't super long no one listened or cared. It didn't seem like a forum dedicated to growing long hair, more like a forum for people who already had super long hair. That's why I really appreciated the few who had short hair (like Igor) growing and documenting their journey. Then it seemed to change, the shorties thread was created, and then all the other length threads,(at least that is how I remember it) and I felt more like shorter hair was ok and accepted. I feel like it's just been getting better and better since then.
But like Shell said, it ebbs and flows around here with attitudes and ideas, and that's cool too. It's a living, growing community. Anyway, I love this thread. I feel so welcomed here. And I really like the posters who post here. So, Dani, I hope you stay and try not to take a few opinions personally. For the most part I feel like this forum is very accepting of short hair now.

That thread made me feel something that I still haven't been able to put into words. It's very strange. It's like... I never realised that some people would actually be against me here because I do some not-so-healthy hair practices. I just can't get into that mentality. I'm just too open-minded to think like that, I guess. Live and let live. I did get a very strong elitist vibe from that thread, and I am not even someone who wants to stick with a shorter length as I aim working my way back to TBL+, but who knows, maybe that's not long enough for some people either, even though it's not their hair.

ETA: And the assumption that everybody wants super long hair. The longest hair. The longer the better. And that members should be given status and more respect based on hair length. Ugh! I just can't stand that kind of thinking.

You put it into words well...

Yeah, I get that it is an achievement for a person to grow very long hair. For one self. I don't think it is okay to measure others by that. To think that longer hair makes one more worthy. Like liking or having 'shorter' hair is some kind of not being good enough.
I think I might have lighted the fire by opening a thread for people who genuinely like bobs and lobs, and maybe never want longer hair again, and just want to share hair stuff that works for that length and style.
I am glad I did it, because if somebody judges me for that I would rather know than just assume or pretend that everyone is nice..

I’m in a curly hair group on Facebook and threads like that get deleted and people booted. They call it curlgatekeeping and don’t want anything to do with it. Whether someone has poker straight or kinky coils they don’t care. We use it to source products especially for where we are, because so much isn’t available. And chat about what works and doesn’t for our hair.

I don’t belong to any other Facebook groups other than 1 wedding dress group and 1 dance stuff but and sell because I hate the drama and whiny crap that happens in those groups. It’s exhausting and draining and it makes it hard to enjoy the group of someone is always pushing and needling for a response.

Yes, I don’t have any plans to grow past waist length. Which will probably be about hip stretched. I know how heavy my hair is that long and I know I go past that length I get brutal headaches. And I know my goal is other people’s starting points. I just want to get to that point with healthy happy hair and still covering my grays. Because I’m too vain to let them show yet.

But I need to put them time in growing the awkward stuff out now. And I’m quite content that it takes as long as it takes and if it takes a year to get to a happy healthy place to grow I’m ok with that. It felt like if I wasn’t shooting for at least classic what am I even doing here and that super long is the only desirable hair. And honestly that thread changed my opinion of a couple posters and it wasn’t for the better at all. I appreciated your support Yiva of this being an open community.

This thread was a refuge for me when I was maintaining a shoulder to collarbone length lob. There IS a lot of disapproval for choosing to have short hair. A couple of members haven't interacted with me since, but I don't miss them. I don't think there's disapproval for coming in with short hair and growing long.

I have just lurked here and makes me feel sad that some of you feel unwanted because of that thread. To me, every lenght is very welcome here, and the longest manes don't have to be the better (I can totally admire a pixie, BSL or floor lenght hair, as long as it appeals to me). Guys and gals, you are NOT less than the long hair heads, or the growing hair heads, in any case. You do you :flower:

I also enjoyed short hair during all my teens, and I know for sure that, if my hair were pin straight, I would just be maintaining a reversed short bob!

If you're getting upset about that thread, bear in mind that it was started by ONE person, and the reason it's gone on for so long is that the vast majority of members are offended by what she suggested, and are making sure their opinions get heard. Shutting it down would have simply silenced those of us who have posted that we DON'T agree with her, and that we want the forum to stay as it is. Hers would have been the only voice that was heard.

Same. I've felt quite unwelcome after I cut my hair. Some other members cut their hair around the same time, and there were some very unpleasant threads about how this is a LONG hair community. I pretty much stopped posting after that, except for here, in the knitting thread and the unnatural hair colours thread (I know, it's probably not called that, I just can't remember). I thought this was an inclusive community for people with hair of all lengths, until I cut my hair short and had the audacity to be happy with my decision, rather than instantly regretting it and vowing to grow it super long again. I loved to participate in the gift swaps, but being a shorty apparently makes me a tricky giftee, so I feel uncomfortable with that too. That's not a problem anymore though, since I'm done with swaps (last time my giftee didn't post a reveal and she didn't even thank me, she just disappeared shortly after receiving the gifts).
I know most people are probably nice and accepting, but my experiences has just left me with bad feeling. Nowadays I just lurk, and occasionally post in the blogs.

I know exactly what you're talking about, and noticed you and other dear friends of mine on here who also went shorter for various reasons, back off. And you know what? It sucks. I miss you all and your input. KittyBird, you were and always will be, an inspiration to me. And as for your gorgeous crafts--your giftee was a tw@t (sorry for the label, but those swap people whose participation was scant, and then bolted with the goods really gave me a bad taste in my mouth). Absolutely rude, selfish and uncaring (in my eyes). I ADORE your knitting, and hold it way above anything else I have. You are so talented. And you have so, so much to offer about your hair as well.

And seriously, I echo Milady, Alibran and others.

Without you guys, there's a hole here at LHC.

A few of us are of the been there, done that camp, and have loads of experience regardless of hair length. Shell, spidermom, KittyBird--we're practically hair twins, and I relate so much to your journeys. I can't be the only one. And anyone who is not after lofty goals, so what? It's your hair. It still needs "long hair" attention, doesn't it? Okay, there may not be much if any hanging below the ears for the ol' scalp only/length only deal, but your hair is probably long enough to clip and coif (with more product and styling options ftw). I admit I live vicariously through you while you enjoy your differing lengths, and others could be doing the same. You actually help me not cut because of that (because the need for me to change can be cyber-experienced via you). And yeah, I love cutting my hair, and always will, and am curious to see how my texture behaves up yonder now that I've embraced it via LHC (I was one who was texture-confused to start). I may even be tempted to go shorter for that sass effect. One day. Mwahahahahaha! Can you imagine what my stash of hairtoys would say about that? :p

In a nutshell, LHC is all and everyone, old and new, and you're a big part of that. The majority of us would hate for that to change (and miss those of you who've backed off). :flowers:

Shell, spidermom and KittyBird your hair looks really good to me :) Most importantly: you are happy with your hair. Your life, your decisions, I think that's more important then whatever someone else says or thinks.

I think it is really a sign of narrow mindedness if people stop interacting because somebody cut their hair.

You are very welcome :grouphug: and nop, I never posted a pic of that era here :) But I have no pic with short hair and my real texture: in my teens my hair started going curly (from 1c-2a to 2c-3a, was quite wild) so I straightened my hair every day, even twice a day. Here's the only proof I could find ATM, I was 15 or so there. Wind is involved, but oh well.

I started accepting my curls when I was 18, when I leaved the iron for good (was so much work and of course my hair was quite damaged), I started growing long by 17 or so. But I love short hairstyles so much, wish I could have an inverted bob without effort... and even a fringe! Curls might be good, but I looked like an evil sheep with short hair :p

ETA: And another pic from when I was 8 aprox, to show that my hair was way straighter than now. Yep, my mother decided that haircut (dunno why, may be she watched Ghost too many times) and I always hated it so much. Now I think we all can laugh about it :rolling:

T'was me in the bob department, and that was when I used to wrangle my hair with mousse, a hairdryer and big, round brush and a paddle brush. I think if I went back to that, I'd see how I'd go letting my boings go loose. It's how my hair behaves around my ears (ski slope when kinda straightened, or rotations of hair in a perpetually haphazard or "wrong" direction) and forehead cowlicks fighting the coils that keep me with my hair longer and weightier, along with some other tetchy factors.

Oh my wow, Milady! Your Ghost do! So sporty!

Popping in to say Hi :waving: and offer support after seeing the other thread  :flowers:

You are all gorgeous .....don't go anywhere ......and feel free to DO YOU............... :lala: to the naysayers.
Hair is hair and everyone experiments at one point or another; short or long.....all are inspiring either way IMHO!

I started here as a shortie (chin) 5 years ago and looking to grow long, because it was too much work for me with my layers and 2 textured hair as it was silvering.

Long hair is easier for me and fun styling; I love the style/hair toy variety each day, and just keep it at a length my old bones don't protest at :p

If life sees fit to cut it short at some point I will just cut/wash/go....and embrace my silver curls fully :cheer:

WILLOWYN.....good to see you, but sorry to hear of your health issues :( .....you are in my thoughts and prayers (Rags too)

Please continue to post your pics...I love seeing them

Nonsense. There is bottle blond grows long, keratine threads etc. so it isn’t about health of hair. I feel it really is an elitist “club members only” thing.

I read through the thread at least first few pages.
The comment “for clarification: I only consider 'invaders' to be the people who aggressively come off as "I have short hair, I don't like long hair, and you all have to deal with me being in your space because I said so" stings.

I will always take space. Why should I not take space? Or anyone else. Besides it isn’t your space, it is a common space here.
Honestly. I am not bashing people who have long hair for sayin I don’t like it. Not on me. And I haven’t ever seen anyone saying they don’t like long hair in general, though what would be wrong with that. People change. Why should you leave a forum if you change your opinion?
There are mant threads here - toys, styling, general topics that will interest me and others who have cut our hair and keeping it short.

I am crossposting this there too.

I'm digging the idea of evil sheep xD Yet you always looks so nice and friendly in your pictures.

I had the same haircut! I think my hair would be slightly more wavy (if it would have been longer), because it just didn't stay put. That combined with the insane amount of volume this cut produced on the top, combined with my lengthy face shape.. I think I looked like a wonky mushroom :/ Can laugh at it now for sure, I see it as just trail and error until I found at least one hairstyle/cut that works for me. Which was quite simple actually, just cut straight across somewhere between shoulder and collarbone. Then teenage and twenty-something years with a LOT more crazy trail and bigger error in general, the last thing being this pixie cut I wanted to try and ended up regretting. I am just done with other styles that seem like an good idea because the look so good on other people, but I know what works for me now and plan to just do my thing :) (oh oops, this has gotten a bit into a long story...)

Upside Down I have the same issue with that comment.

What a time to delurk. Nothing like some LHC drama to liven up the day. I popped on to peep at this thread, saw the bob/lob lovers thread, and was happy to see it.

LHC was the reason I was comfortable going from damaged bsl to healthy shoulder length. Thanks to the community, advice, and inspiration on these forums, I learned to love my hair at every phase of the journey. While I am back at bsl now, I do think about giving lob 2.0 a try for spring or summer, and the first place that came to mind for checking out some options was this very thread. There is beautiful hair at every legnth. My Pinterest boards hold steady at about half and half bsl or below, and lobs/long bobs. I like both, on myself and on others. Why pick, when moving between both can be this much fun?

*delurks*

:flowers:

And, thanks for being here all of you--it's nice to have comrades in the non-growth journey. I love long hair--but "been there done that" for now anyway. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Ooh I like it! It looked really good before, but I also really like it after too. So cute! That length looks really good on you. Thanks for posting pics.

I have been torn on my hair length lately. I'm just growing for now, going to try to grow until 2020 and then reassess. We will see... But whether I decide to grow my hair out again or not, I think I will keep coming back to this thread.
I love this thread and the people in it, and I love the attitude towards hair on this thread as well. I think its one of the most welcoming places here at LHC. I loved what everyone had to say earlier, that was so nice to see. <3

I missed out a really heated discussions here ;)
I mean the other thread... quite sensitive topic. But unfortunately I had this feeling when I joined LHC. It felt somehow as I didn’t deserve to be here because I have such short hair, and sometimes I had an impression that nobody cares what I have to say or share. I’ve been sitting in “ conscious hair care” for almost 10 years now, and I managed to collect quite a lot of information about hair care, ingredients, oils, label reading and everything related. But somehow it felt that here all this didn’t mattter since - you have short hair, you don’t know squat.
But I think it changed a bit ;) I noticed a shift in attitude over last 2 years :D

That’s kind of how I feel too.
Short suits you. Very flattering, and I love your texture!

Paulownia and all the others who said they feel unworthy because of short hair.
Keep in mind many people don’t even read posts before replying to a thread, then many only read replies from people they know and also kind of this - people are very much in their heads generally (not just on the internet). Then there is the swoon effect of glorious photos of longhairs (we all react to them  ) that usually trigger a cascade reaction, and finally probably a very very small number of people who think we (shorthairs) have no business on this forum.

Sooo, just something to consider, before feeling offended or unwanted.

Another thing that happens here is it can take awhile for someone new to be recognized as part of the community. Since I have been a member, there have been so many people who dropped into the community for a very short time, maybe to get input on one problem they're having, then they disappear. I used to be very welcoming of new people and tried my best to engage, but stopped because they weren't around long enough.

I think that it was a newbie feeling that I had ;) being intimidated by the crowd of long manes and not believing in my own worth. But when I started posting with some more consistency and only when I had something sensible to say I started noticing responses.
Maybe I was too sensitive ;) never mind, now I feel much more confident on the forum and i really appreciate this community. Back in 2016 it seemed to be such an impermeable place ;)

Well, I'm not one of you guys (non-growth oriented) at the moment, but I've been sporting a pixie since last winter and just started growing it out again in september. So still VERY short (and layered, and currently mullet-y. Bleh.). I tend to stay away from here some when i have short hair, because of some of what has been said. But then, my hair is usually short when I'm very, very ill, so there is that too (I don't feel up to coming on here). And my goal is probably only BSL, because I think that's all my poor hair will grow to right now with the meds (they seem to shorten my terminal length, or else my illness is doing that). Regardless, I don't always feel accepted, and then the threads or comments about thin hair upset me, so I tend to lurk or just stay away a lot.

The other thread made me sad, and I'm glad so many people stood up against it. Nice to see everyone "delurking" though!

I like lurking in this thread :) I'm not at a really short length (W+) but I have been maintaining here for over 2 years now and don't want to grow longer. I've been thinking when I do keratin next I want to trim back to just above waist, too.

TheLuckyLurker
February 11th, 2019, 04:37 PM
So after four months, I just thickened up my see-through bangs. It was only a little tiny bit, but I think it helped. It's hard enough to keep them trimmed, I don't need them always looking greasy and nasty because they're so thin my oily skin soaks through them one day after washing them. Also, f(&% these side pieces. It's really hard to trim them myself, and at this point I think they're only worth having if you wear your hair down all the time. And now they're at this length where even after straightening them they curve and curl in weird directions and look dumb, but they're also too short to incorporate into an updo, so I have to pin them back which is kind of hit or miss for me...

Yeah, I cut everything to a bob, then buzzed everything off for health reasons. So I feel ya. *hugs* I feel it'd be pretty pointless for me to keep long hair when I had this huge bald patch. I was also too physically weak to take care of my hair, I was bedridden for a while.

I don't know, I'm so used to having long hair (had classic for most of my life, at some point started cutting and regrowing back into classic and again...) that I just can't understand this fangirlish obsession with length at all cost. People, stop cutting, it'll grow *shrugs*. What I do value is hair health/quality, I'd like to have nice and manageable hair, which always was a challenge for me.

Hey All--I'm back, and you know what that means. I tried; I really, really tried, but I just don't want long hair. I'm not that person anymore. I used to be. I still enjoy seeing long hair on others, but I really am not enjoying it on myself. My hair is just brushing the tops of my shoulders, and it feels too long.

Also, I have been trying to grow it back for all the wrong reasons. Reason one: hula. Yes, hula dancers have long hair, but hey, I'm a rebel. I know that Kumu says, "Everyday is a hula day." And maybe she's right, but I'm going to have to have hula days with short hair. The second reason is more of an issue. It's financial. Short hair just costs money--money I don't currently have. My stylist is $60, and then $5 for tip. Short hair needs regular cutting, at least every 6 weeks. Sigh. I am actually looking around for a barber--hey if Bernice can do it, so can I. Okay, random reference to "Bernice Bobs Her Hair"--sorry.

I have an appointment for Sep. 10--it's the day after school starts (hopefully), and after both upcoming shows. And, here's what I'm thinking of:

https://i.imgur.com/X2s8Rd6.jpg

I figure this needs much less upkeep than a short pixie, it's long enough to hold an adornment, and not too difficult to grow out if I hate it, which I really don't think I will. I could wear it straight or curly, or even with a little braid for the bangs. Also, I could wear it behind my ears, or as bangs. I need to check with my stylist though, as my hair is thicker than this.

I will of course update.

I'm sorry the pic is so huge--I can't make it smaller.

So pretty, Shell!

Uh, I'm having a similar dillema right now. I wanted to grow out my buzzcut to a bob and maintain, maybe let it grow to a lob to see how my texture changed with my current, different routine (my hair gets curliest past shoulders) and cut back to bob again and maintain but it's pixie-ish now (just grown out, I don't do corrective cuts) and *it's already too long for me*. If I could wear it permanently braided in some way I could wait till it gets longer, maybe. I learned I just can't stand hair touching my face, neck, covering my ears, etc... I feel best with buzzed hair, completely covered with a scarf or with my hair up. I just can't stand loose hair, I never realized it's such a problem for me but I see it now. I was always unhappy with my long hair attacking me (lol). I don't even LIKE loose hair. I think I need either a buzzcut or braid shop. I'm all confused. I do own fancy hair clippers that can be washed under running water, so buzzing would be very hygienic and cheap so the temptation is strong. But if I'll do it I'll have to grow out all over again to experiment with braids. I'm learning to french braid them now, but learning how to braid takes time, like every skill, and each time I feel my hair touching anything other than my scalp I'm furious. I'm not sure what to do, I can't decide :(

I figure this needs much less upkeep than a short pixie, it's long enough to hold an adornment, and not too difficult to grow out if I hate it, which I really don't think I will. I could wear it straight or curly, or even with a little braid for the bangs. Also, I could wear it behind my ears, or as bangs. I need to check with my stylist though, as my hair is thicker than this.

I will of course update.

I'm sorry the pic is so huge--I can't make it smaller.

This is a cute looking cut! I keep my hair long for the same reason you mentioned with the money. I haven't been to a stylist in over a year, there is no way I could afford a short cut that needed to be maintained. I used to just cut my hair myself when I was young. Good luck finding a barber!

spidermom--I don't want to keep you in suspense any longer! I'm still working on fine tuning the styling--it may take awhile, but I really like it so far:

I have no pics of the back, because it needs better straightening.

I love your cut! It looks so good and I think it came out so well! I think it will be so much fun to style and do stuff with. That is a nice thing about shorter hair.

Groovy Granny, Thanks. Yes, long hair does avoid the dreaded flip.

ReadingRenee, I went for a cheap cut, and will try to cut it myself I think, so yeah, I'm cheap. That was a great thing about long hair.

Haha, yeah transition is the worst, isn't it? I remember I always liked how I looked in a bob (IMO I looked better than with my usual long hair) but it was uncomfortable so I grown it out each time. It's only when I tried even shorter styles that I found a style that I don't have to, uh, style. Or put up. Or comb. Or shampoo. Or anything. *sighs*

I think I'll give myself some time for emotions to cool down and try to learn some braids while I still can (lol) but I'll probably cut it... I'm mostly afraid it'll be too cold in fall/winter. But I was thinking, I'll try the longest setting on my clippers (which obviously isn't too long, hah), they brag about their longest setting being longer than other clippers on the package, maybe that'll give me some short spiked style? I'll check how many mm it is and will try to measure on my head to see how 'long' (heh, heh, heh...) that is, maybe it'll be better than that 1,5 cm from last time, I thought my head would fall off from the cold (and I worn scarves all the time and still felt too cold).

Thanks, keep rocking your cool hairstyle xD.

Not to start any hair dresser bashing, but I have discovered that flips, *choppy* layers, razoring or shredding the hair really means not having to exhibit much skill in the actual art of cutting hair. Sorry it got flippy, but it sounds like you'll be much happier doing your own cuts.

Is there a way to avoid getting a “flippy” haircut? What causes it?

I have a haircut scheduled for Saturday, and I would like to avoid having ends that flip out... If I can ask the stylist to do or not do something to prevent the ends from flipping, that would be really helpful!

spidermom

I think flippy ends has to do with the wave pattern.

I am always fighting to get my ends not to curl under after a new cut. What causes that? I'm wavy so its very tempermental.

Shell

spidermom, Wave pattern is part of it, and I might just let it go at that, but when I've had it recut by professionals, the flip comes back. When I cut it myself, I can do a lot to get rid of it. So, I've reached the conclusion that they are doing it on purpose.

I finished cutting my hair today--I needed to clean up the back a bit, and I worked on the bangs a bit too. I'm liking it better and better. I flatironed it and then curled it. I'm wearing it that way, and pinned back on the sides with bobby pins.

When I reach back and feel my short locks on my head, and when I see myself in the mirror I look like me. I've had this experience with short hair before, many times in my life. I have also had this feeling with long hair--just not for many years. I just feel chic and sassy with it short. It makes me smile. And, it's all for me--it's pointless. I like doing things for joy that have no point. This is why I do origami, and paint, and draw. They really have no point besides the doing of them. Playing the 'ukulele and dancing hula are similar. I am cutting and styling my hair in a pixie just for the joy of it--not for hula, or any person. I need to make myself happy.

And yes, I am rehearsing for the various snide comments I'm anticipating. I'm going to a hula workshop next weekend, and expect some comments. I've already gotten a few on FB. One hula sister greeted me with an "I love your hair." That and silence are the only appropriate comments. "I liked your hair better when it was long" is not appropriate. I would never dream of making such a comment, and I'm stunned that people feel free to make it to me.

I did it! I cut my hair into a bob from apl. That might not seem like a big difference to some, but it was a big deal for me. I used to regularly have a bob, but I’ve maintained long hair (well, what’s considered long to me) for a long time. At some point long hair became my new normal, and I was afraid to cut it. I don’t handle change well.

I’m handling this change better than expected! I love that my hair now moves. It’s fun to mess it up and shake it around. I don’t have weight pulling on my sensitive scalp anymore. I was able to cut out a lot of damage (from my pre LHC days). I’m looking forward to easier washing/drying. It feels like I got a bit of my old-self back.

I hope I keep liking it. So far so good, but knowing myself, it still might be a rollercoaster of emotions. I know it’s “just hair”, but somehow it seems like more. It’s like my hair represents what I’m feeling on the inside, which makes all of it quite vulnerable.

Anyway, the haircut itself didn’t turn out exactly like I was wanting. I may need to get it cut again in attempt to get it closer to what I want. It will be interesting to see if I do that, or if I panic and go back into grow mode. But hey- for now I’m liking short hair, and I’m planning to maintain, so I’m happy to be in this thread!

I know with wavy hair if you don't want the ends to flip out, they have to be cut at the downturn of the wave. Of course, as the hair grows, the ends will sooner or later reach the point in the wave pattern where they flip out again.

My problem is that I can wear my hair ultra short, but as it grows, it starts to fluff out like cotton candy or something. I'm sure you remember my goth photo. I don't have access to it now.

I agree that while people may be entitled to their opinions, they aren't entitled to force their opinions on others, especially when it's hurtful to do so. I have a hard time when somebody asks me how I like some change they've made, and I don't like it at all. What does one say that's not lying and not hurtful?

Right. I know that you didn't solicit opinions, but I've been caught in the situation of "what do you think of my new hair color (for example)?" and having to bite back "I think it's hideous" for something more socially acceptable. I try to turn it back with something like "It's a big change. How are you liking it?"

You know, as often as I've had short hair, I don't think I've ever looked in the mirror and thought "That's it. That looks like me." It's usually more like I wish it were longer but can appreciate that now it will be easier to deal with or cooler or faster to dry; something like that. One year in St. Louis it was so hot and humid that my BSL hair felt heavy and hot even when it was put up. I finally snapped and had it cut short. Two days later the heat wave ended, and I felt so sorry that I'd had it cut.

Yes! I got it “fixed” on Tuesday. She made it a little better, but for the most part it’s the same cut as before, but now it’s even shorter. I have to admit, that little bit more she took off took me shorter than what I am comfortable with. I panicked for a few days and had my grow-grow-grow mindset come back. I think I’m starting to calm down though. I went from “no trims/protective updos for a year!” to “hmm... I wonder if I can trim it myself. Maybe I can shape it like this in December, and like that in summer...” So I think I’ll grow it a little bit, but I’m looking forward to trimming it and reshaping it myself. The idea of being independent from cosmetologists is really exciting to me.

Hi, I'm back again :)
I took some time off LHC to finish my thesis / study and find a job, and now that I am done, I am happy to be back and that this thread is still alive!

Shell and Lillte Lemon, good on you for being happy going shorter :D
Lillte Lemon, if you want, I think we all would like to see some pictures of your new do ;)

This summer, I kept my hair in a bob style, somewhere around mid-neck to shoulder-grazing length. This style is sort-of a sweet spot for me. I like the look, it is long enough to hide behind a little bit, short enough to not get in the way too much. I was just too stressed out to grow it longer. It was also too hot, with these extreme heat waves :(
Aside from still liking the style visually and being able to cut it myself, I still find myself adoring shorter bobs, pixies etc. on other women..
During peek-stress times in the last weeks, I resorted to watching long-to-short transformation videos and pictures.. Does that sound familiar to any of you?

I'm also contemplating going shorter, because I still don't like to get hair in my face or stuck somewhere else, and at this length it starts to get a bit annoying.
However, my BF gave his unsolicited opinion that he prefers long hair and ''I just don't want you to be sad again for half a year if it doesn't turn out to your liking''
He is right about that last this, that really happened last time I went to a hairdresser, when they cut a too-short pixie. I definitely wouldn't want such an extreme change.
Any thoughts on this?

He is right about that last this, that really happened last time I went to a hairdresser, when they cut a too-short pixie. I definitely wouldn't want such an extreme change.
Any thoughts on this?

I really hear all this. Except my hair is a little past APL. My husband loves long hair(his is long) and he LOVES mine long as well. So, its pretty tough. I always say I regret it after every hair cut, so I try to remember that. I did really enjoy my hair after my last short haircut though. I was happy with it for at least a few months but then I started getting that longing for long hair again.

I have noticed that I have certain lengths that I want to cut short but if I get past them, I am happy my hair is still long. But yep, I have been eyeing a pixie lately. I find myself even eyeing mens short hair cuts with longing. It's pretty annoying. I would like to just be happy with the hair that I have. :)

Laura1986 glad to hear you have been enjoying your shorter length.

As for getting a shorter bob or pixie, it sounds like it would be a good idea to play it safe and cut back only in stages if you decide to go for it. Often a smaller change can be much more satisfying than you would have thought, and if you happen to want longer hair again, you'll only be a few months from where you started.

I love my hair long, and I love it short. I have made the decision to grow it this time until the ends cross a belt at my waist. Setting a goal and sticking to it is good practice for anybody and helps me avoid regret. Meanwhile I also watch long to short videos or makeovers like Laura1986.

Glad to see more people with these thoughts :)

Today I went to a hairdresser friends recommended. Initially for advice, but I also got a cut. I got a classic bob with a side-swept bang. Not too sure what I think about it. I mean, it is shorter, however not less annoying. Even more, I would argue, as it gets in my face just as easily, and it is too short to pull back in a ponytail now. Also, I feel this classic shape looks 'old'.
At some point I will need to decide to either take it shorter and out of my face, or grow it a bit longer again. A long bob seems my best option..

Laura1986 personally I love the classic bob look, but I can understand being frustrated at it getting into your face. Sometimes after a change, it takes a while to adjust and gain your true opinion on the way it looks and feels.

Even if you end up not adjusting to it, it will not take very long at all to grow it back into a lob :blossom:

Agreed.

That's why I told the hairdresser to stop cutting shorter, she also wanted to give me a undercut around the head (because I have fine, but many hairs and they can look poofy at this length).
I am a huge fan of gradual cutting :agree:

I'm really glad a thread like this exists. I'm growing right now but I might not be forever.
And I'm not so sure I'm really going to want to go LHC-long. I think classic would be my absolute limit.
Collarbone to APL is a really good length on me, so if I reach my goals but can't stand it that long,
I already know what I'm going to do. Or if I get fed up before my goals, even!
Hell, I'm not even opposed to the idea that I might end up with a buzz cut again in the future.
Really never know what the future will bring.
Whatever the length, I just want to have soft healthy hair!

I'm really glad there's a variety of people on this forum!
It's cool to get perspectives from people with all different hairtypes and goals.
I was worried at first it would be all people growing from already long to terminal, but everyone's got their own unique hair story and goal. So fun!

I think I'm going for slow growth. So, frequent trims, but no huge chops anytime soon. I trust my stylist to not take off too much, I don't trust myself to not cause a bunch of split ends as it gets longer.

Note to self: When your hair gets awful, remember to thin and texturize it. Sigh. It looks better today. Yes, I did it myself. I am two months from my last hair cut, and I'm trying to wait at least two more (six if I can stand it) until I cut again. I've enjoyed the pixie, but I miss my curls. So, I'm trying to grow it until my curls return, then I will get it cut into something cute. Still short, but not as short. I'm thinking between chin and collar bone is where I'll settle. :)

I've been trying to stop my urge to cut my hair short for about six months now... Lurking on here doesn't help, lol! Anyway, I thought I'd ask if any of you know any good methods of self-trimming about shoulder length hair? Is that too short for Feye's method, do you think?

Siv, I keep my hair below chin or so, but I go to the hairdressers. When my hair was bsl+ I could self trim neatly, no problem, but this short, I can’t see it when I hold it to be cut so I haven’t dared go alone.

Fair enough! I imagine it would be hard to grip everything together à la Feye without some tendrils breaking loose

Siv, At that length, I do self trim. I part in the middle at the back of my head, and pull each side over my shoulder to trim. If you end up creating a point, you can either trim it off yourself, or get someone else to do it. I don't usually end up with a point.

Oh that sounds easy! I usually do that, but after the Feye method to get a U-hemline. Hmm, food for thought...

I have also trimmed my hair when it was shoulder length. Doing it the way Shell said works for me. :) Sometimes I like more of an A line and I just make a ponytail at the nape of my neck, slide it down slightly and then cut underneath the ponytail. That way always gives me longer hair in the front and shorter in the back.

Well, last time I did this, After I made my initial cut of the ponytail, I let my hair loose, flipped my head upside down and point cut just the ends of my hair. It ended up being a pretty fabulous cut, if I do say so myself. :D Also very liberating. i was very happy with it.

I just watched a document about Shania Twain and realized that I'm sick'n tired of spending so much time with my tangly mess daily. I want to have a sporty hair! Shiny again and easy to maintain and keep open without a certain tangle problem. And I think it's not possible to me to have a sporty hair if it's long to the butt. I think I'll cut 10 cm away (abt 5 inches) and I already cut me side swept bangs. My egg shaped head form needs volume up there, and that volume just won't stay there with very long bangs. So I hope I'll soon look like Shania Twain 😁 It's also difficult to make any hairdos with my long tangly mess, and I absolutely want to make me a sporty, shiny half up half down high ponytail with bouncy bangs again... and I don't even need to cut much for that, to the middle back I think. That is still long hair I think.

I hope I'll find good YouTube instructions for cutting my back hair...

Yes! I love coconut oil. Not everyone does but my hair absorbs it really well without feeling greasy. Warning though, you need just a tiny bit or else you WILL eventually be a greaseball, LOL. For me at APL with thin, fine hair the sweet spot is about a quarter teaspoon.

I'm so happy with my hair right now. (I cut back from around tailbone to about collarbone on April 1.) I love the length. I love the texture. I love the color. I put it in two French braids last night and it took me FOUR minutes. I know I never maintain length. I always cut it and then leave it alone for months or years and it grows long again. But I'm seriously considering maintaining this length. It's just so good.

So far, so good! It just takes time.. I'm a "I'd like to try every hairstyle" type of gal, but a pixie cut went much faster than finding out how long my hair will grow.. I've never had it this long, and I still think it's fun, so why not?

It's understandable that it doesn't feel long, but whatever makes you happy is what's most important!

I got a pixie yesterday too. My hair was short anyway since I was growing out a buzz but now it has some shape and I plan on keeping it short for the foreseeable future.
I'm not 100% happy with my cut so I will let it grow a little so I can get it fixed in a couple months.

So... this is my thread now and I'm more than okay with that, even if I should be here alone for the moment...

I have been quite intensely dedicated to growing my hair as long as possible for the past six years and I needed a break from that. When I started out I had thought I could improve my thickness. Now I know I can't beat genetics and never will be a true ii, always bordering on i/ii. I enjoyed the almost TBL length, longest of my life. I enjoyed learning buns, but over time my scalp grew sensitive and I couldn't wear any but a messy top bun without pain. I couldn't wear my hair down, not even at WL where I cut back in March, because it was a clingy, stringy, tangly mess.

And wash days... I couldn't deal with those. I started to really hate wash days. Could not take the hassle any more, could not stand half a day of air-drying. My scalp needs washing more often than every 5 days, because I sweat a lot during sport activities, but with long hair I could not make myself wash more often. And scalp-only washing would be as much hassle as a full wash. Now I can quickly shampoo every other day if my scalp is yucky.

I've been thinking about shorter lengths for a while and I took a plunge and cut back to APL. It's the length that suited me the most, when I looked over old pictures and sure enough - I cannot explain why but - it instantly makes me look younger. I am happy. My only complaint is that it is still too long - I cut less because this was the first time I tried the "babushka method" and I was worried it would be crooked and I'd have to even it out.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=50022&d=1719838074

I was aiming for APL, but I think my longest hairs are at MBL. I will live with this for a few weeks, but eventually I will be taking off 5-10 cm more. I am also itching to try two DIY tutorials for bobs, one is a blunt A-line, the other a slightly textured A-line. I wouldn't cut as short as bob though, I know a bob does not compliment my face, but would make it a collarbone lob.

It's probably a phase I'm in, needing the freedom of shorter hair. Will see how long it lasts. I am so looking forward to wearing my hair down. I cannot wait to wear my favorite half-up half-downs, and guess who is gonna buy all the cutest mini claw clips for those hairstyles?

I'm also around APL, but I'm growing it back to in between MBL and WL, depending on what feels better (and what I can personally handle). I don't let pain stop me from having long hair, since I can always do neck exercises or something to strengthen my neck muscles. I don't mind APL, but I prefer it somewhere in between MBL and WL, even if it means I have to switch up the style every once in a while to give my neck muscles a bit of a break (though I have the habit of reaching into my cupboards without using a stool, so that could be another cause). I hate it shoulder length, so that's a no for me (since I can't stand my hair on my neck, so it's better to keep it longer and put it up in the summer months). I also don't like wearing my hair down, so it needs to be long enough to either put it back in a ponytail or up in a larger claw clip (I actually did that yesterday when I lost my large barrette, since I think it was too loose and constantly fell out, so it was only a matter of time before I eventually lost it).

If you are referring to my hair Bat, it hadn't been bleached... but I agree, it feels fuller now. At least some of my work has paid off, my hair is somewhat slightly thicker than it had been the last time I was this length, years ago.

So I'm not really liking this U-shape that the babushka cut gave me. I am not used to it, I prefer a blunt hemline, or a very slightly layered/textured haircut. And it is definitely too long, longer than the APL I had wanted, because my ends keep getting stuck in my armpits (gross). Tomorrow it's wash day and I will do something about it. Not sure what, yet. Decisions, decisions...

Maybe check the pigtails cut by Manes by Mell?
If you place pigtails further back on your head and keep them very low ;). It should give slight layering at the ends And more graduated shape, getting rid of U shape.

No worries, Bat :)

Thanks, Paulownia. I am aware of the pigtails method, but this time I had wanted to try something more "refined".

Ever since I saw the videos of one Paul Watts, showing how to cut a textured bob (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq5JYkLBuy4) / textured lob (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ-1yY6mGUk), I was obsessed. They were constantly tempting me and I knew that one day I just would have to try them.

So I did try, the first one. I did not cut a bob, I again took much less in fear it would be crooked and instead of a collarbone lob I ended up with a mess between SL and APL. Don't get me wrong, those videos are great, superb. So informative, and the ponytail section cuts are so simple and quick. BUT. They will work and look wonderful on wavy or curly or thick hair. NOT on fine and thin hair like mine, because:
a) the cut does need polishing and dusting the odd longer/uneven hairs after taking down the ponytails, which I am not able to do by myself
b) if this cut is to work on straight hair, it absolutely needs blow-drying with a round brush and/or heat styling into waves, which I am not willing to do.

I am glad that I tried, though. If I hadn't, I'd be forever wondering how it works. And since I cut it way too long, I had enough length left to fix it. Which I did, following this tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kF3Dh-ImZs). In my opinion, this is the best, most on point, no-nonsense, most instructive video on how to cut a blunt A-line long bob ever. (Should anyone ever read this, looking for advice, I recommend also reading the comments below this video for more valuable points and instructions.)

I've learned my lesson. My kind of hair can only ever work with a blunt cut, nothing else.

Finally I am happy. My head feels so unbelievably light, even if my fine long hair could not have possibly weighed that much. It feels as if my heads could detach itself at any moment and fly upwards.

Somewhere on the forum I've read that hair follicles are only meant to carry their own weight and not much else. My fine hair agrees. I had been struggling with the weight of buns (even a low scrunchie bun was absolutely killing my neck and shoulders on long hikes) and the weight of my hairtoys. I actually weighed them on my kitchen scale. A 7g wooden stick was not acceptable to my scalp, but a 6g plastic fork was tolerable. Claw clips up to 10g are okay on most days, but my big claw clips ranging from 20g to 32 g were causing instant tension and headache-like feeling within ten minutes of wearing.

My scalp is much happier with washing every 2-3 days. Stretching washes (or avoiding them, in my case) is not for me. I got two hair-turban towels in Decathlon and air-drying with this length is now a breeze, a non-issue. I can even achieve soft, loose waves merely by scrunching excess water from my hair with a towel and then letting it be, no products. (Though I bought some hair mousse to try when I want my waves to last several days.)

I still wear a hair covering whenever outdoors (a tube/Buff scarf). It became a habit with long hair, but I am keeping this one. It keeps my scalp protected from the sun and my hair from bugs, flies and other pollutants in the air.

Thank you, Paulownia :)

I'm not sure whether what I have is a bob or a lob. It's definitely longer than chin length, and it's juuust grazing my shoulders, but with my neck being so short, I am not sure how to classify it. Personally, I call it a "blob" :D

There are sooo many cute hairstyle tutorials even for this length on IG, I can't wait to try them. Unfortunately, 90% of them involve using those dreaded hair-killer plastic bubble hair ties. But there still many that don't. I am going to order some cute mini claw clips and hairbands today :o

I'd say a lob is between bottom of neck to shoulder. I'm happy for you that you are enjoying your hair again

About a month since my chop my lob has lost its shape and my hair has been sneaking past my shoulders, it really grows even faster at this length for me.

So today I had my husband trim off about 4 cm (2 inches) in a straight line and it once again grazes my shoulders. Next time, next month probably, I will take even more, because I want a bit of my neck to be bare and breezy. He also buzzed off that pesky uneven nape hair that annoys the heck out of me for a more polished look.

I really like this. DH says my hair looks like a sweeping brush now, but that's really a compliment because it means it actually looks thicker.

I have not tried a single hairstyle from my saved IG tips for this length, because I like too much my everyday go-to style: take the front bits on either side, twist them, pouf them up and clip them with cute mini claw clips somewhere in the back, behind the ears.
