Looking back over the last few pages of this thread, before I post.
Shell, that Southern Tease looks lovely and easy to do. Definitely going to have to try that one.
Kittybird, those currrrlllllssss. All fun and bouncy and swirly; the current cut definitely shows them off beautifully.
As for me, it's been fourteen months since I cut to shoulder, with only one trim in between, which brings us to today's hair:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/Unzadi/Hair%20Fashion%20Beauty/CurrentHair2_zpse1azqk7o.png
The bangs are my overgrown face framing layers smushed around a bit, to show my stylist on the next visit, which will be to cut in bangs and a small trim. I waffled for a while on whether I wanted to keep growing or cut back (is it possible to miss both long and short hair at the same time?) so I figure parking myself firmly in the middle is the answer for now. There are lots of variations I can play with at this length, it's comfy, I like it, so all's good.

Got my hair cut again last night. No layering this time. I told her to just point-cut the ends to take some of the bulk away, and it looks just like the first cut that I loved. Yay!

I'm so glad that I joined LHC and learned how to work with my texture instead of against it. The last time I had hair this length, I thought it was awful, and I was right. I have the pictures to prove it. I was always trying to brush it or straighten it.

Shoulder length rocks!
It most certainly does. Classic and versatile, can look longer or shorter depending on how one styles it. I loved shoulder length. Still miss it sometimes (but then again I still miss longer hair sometimes, too) so was very happy to try out a variation of a roller set Arctic shared, a while back. Ponytail on top of the head, sponge rollers, sleep on it, et voila:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/Unzadi/Hair%20Fashion%20Beauty/232bab01-766c-423c-bbf4-8916e1cd140b_zpsfcvrvmqk.png (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Unzadi/media/Hair%20Fashion%20Beauty/232bab01-766c-423c-bbf4-8916e1cd140b_zpsfcvrvmqk.png.html)
Slight editing to make self not look like ghost, and this is third day hair, but I like the result a lot. Will have to fine tune this one and fit it into style rotation. Now I definitely want to play around with hot rollers.

My hair has gotten oilier again, I guess thanks to starting using silicones and I can't get good second day hair anymore, which means I need to wash daily which means I can't do overnight curls. :( Your curls look great!

How long would you think my hair is, looking at the photo? It's slightly longer than shoulder length in the back, slightly longer than collarbone in the front. I dutch-braided the right side back and coiled into a bun, pinned with roller pins. Then I dutch-braided the left side and wrapped it under the first bun and up the right side. It wouldn't wrap all the way around - too short. But I think my style somehow gives the illusion of much longer hair.

It just sits strangely round my shoulders where the layers are! But also I really don't like having my hair up a lot because I feel very self conscious like that. I like the feeling of wearing it up if I'm not going anywhere though. I don't really know what I want right now I think?

I did it; got it cut shorter. Now it's shoulder length in the front, somewhat shorter than that in the back. I told the stylist not to cut too many layers or short layers because I like weight in the ends "not wispy thin ends". She told me wispy and thin would be impossible in my hair; it's too thick. haha I think it has only been about 1 month since my last haircut, but it had grown an inch.

Ooh, so pretty, I want to braid mine like that, Shell! And with the ribbon, ahh! I used ribbons on my long hair all the time! KittyBirds curls are so cute too. Pretty hair in that thread!
So, thanks for help, I eventually started using bobby pins for bathing. Curently growing them out slightly to shoulder/lob and pins stopped working that great but my hair are slightly too short for puff/ponytail on top of my head. I mean, I can do it, but some hair fall out and its too tight... I won't cause myself traction alopecia on purpose :/. So, I saw so many hairstyles vids for shoulder/lob, and I love putting my hair up, that I'll check if I like short or long bob better. But I won't let my hair go past my shoulders, no way. I'm curious which one I will like better, hmm. Apparently you can braid or even do some weird buns at shoulder, interesting. Hair fun with less drama than long hair? ;)
I forgot to post pics of my braid!
https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3682/33246961520_35f66a0509_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/SDVnmu)
I will probably wear it this way tomorrow. I had planned to today, but never got around to washing it. I prefer to braid it wet with some kind of braid paste. I should mention that I've tied up the ends with ribbon--they are longer than the picture is showing by about three inches.

You could pull it all back into a ponytail with the tie at the length you want, then have somebody cut it. Or you could get a Creaclip. I like going to the salon.

I'm trying to grow a bit too, after lingering approx at the same length for probably like 1,5 years or so. I hope to reach BSL, full BSL which would be my own record. I will probably keep it there (if I ever get there, lol, I still love to trim!) for a while, and who knows what after that. I do know at some point I will go shorter again. Currently I am not really part of this thread in that sense, even though I am in spirit.
I have been dreaming of bangs lately. I almost always do not like how I look with them though, so might just wait it out.
Olive I love that shape on me too! It looks good on you!
Spidermom good thing about hair is we can let it fluctuate a easily and since it grows so slowly we have plenty of time to make decisions. One thing with super short hair is that it gets out of shape quickly. Your is the shape that allows plenty of freedom about trimming or letting it grow.

Hello everyone. Recently I was at waist (ok maybe it was just my longest strands :p ) I trimmed back to BSL. Honestly. I think i want to take a rest from the GROW GROW GROW mentality. Not that i wont continue to grow in the future. But since I shaved my head in 2013 Ive just wanted to grow longer longer longer. But honestly im a bit bored. I dont know if i will cut shorter or just keep it as BSL for a while. Im thinking Ill have some fun for a few years before i begin the GROW GROW GROW again. After all, ive learned in the last 4 years that days are long and years are short and that hair will always grow. So heres to enjoying our hair and not being scared of damage long enough to catch our breaths.

Hi everyone!
I just cut from almost hip to APL. Long story short I was getting very disinterested in caring for my long hair because it was not in great condition, and just keeping it manageable was a lot of effort. I hated having it in a bun every day, ponytails got tangled and scruffy looking, and wearing it down was out of the question, I was not enjoying it.
With my new cut I'm rocking a half up and my hair hasn't gotten in my way once and I can still run my fingers through without snagging 6 hours later, ends feel soft, moisturised, thick and strong, and I'm motivated to keep them that way with LHC know-how.
Also, washing is so easy now!

Of course, I'm one to talk. Since Photobucket changed their policy, I haven't sought out a new site to host my images.
I'm still managing by the skin of my teeth (haha) to hold off on cutting until the first day of autumn. It helps that we're poor right now.
I am kind of excited by the prospect of APL - more styling options plus more weight to my floaty hair. When I see pictures of myself with a bun or braid (hair all pulled back), I'm discouraged from the prospect of ever growing my hair to a length where I'd have to wear it up most of the time.

I was going to grow my hair until the first day of fall, maybe even to APL length, but over the past few days, all I can think about is a fun new haircut.
I followed a facebook post to a YouTube video of a woman with floor-length hair dropping it out of a bun and swaying back and forth with it. It positively repulsed me. I'm just not that into long hair these days.

Lots of activity here since my lack of activity. I completely missed the whole Photobucket debacle -what sites do we use for hosting now?- but nice to see there is still lively discussion.
I can definitely relate to the pull between longer and shorter lengths. My longest layers (I got layers put in back in June) is between APL and BSL, with face framing layers, which I like, but am also remembering how much I liked shoulder length. Pinning up the back and leaving the front layers loose is kind of best of both worlds.

Arelrios when I had shoter hair I loved my rotating hair brush. It's a heat tool that smoothes hair while it dries it too after washing. I can't use it anymore because I fear the round rotating brush would tangle to my hair and the drying time would be too long, but it was a nice tool to get straight hair but with body, and it was easy to use.

I think I've seen this ... and it looks super interesting... I don't love the look of perfectly pin straight hair on me... why? well, because my hair is so coarse that the ends start going in every single possible direction and looks bad... like really bad... like I have a very bad haircut and even like is damaged...
However, smooth and body sounds really good... I will look into this... Thanks so much Artic

Arelrios if you happen to own a blow dryer and a brush, you could try blow drying your hair straight. Those rotating hair brushes give the same effect as blow drying with a round brush - straight but voluminous. The brush doesn't need to be round though. I use a paddle brush with my hair. However it takes more practice to blow dry your own hair properly. I used to have a one of those hot air brushes years ago and remember it being really easy to use on short hair. On longer hair it just got tangled.
Currently I'm growing my hair out from a pixie to a bob. I've really liked my hair this short but wanted a change. My goal is somewhere between chin and shoulder lenght. I've grown out my hair twice before and decided that this time I want it to look good during the growing-out phase. So I get it trimmed once a month when I have it dyed. It'll be a longer process but I'm not in a hurry and it's interesting to see how my hairdresser will cut it.
My hair has become a lot wavier since I cut it short. It looks like 2b or 2c when I used to think it was 1c/2a. I've found a curl cream I like but I have't figured out what to use to revive the waves after I've slept on it. Adding water or any liquid leave-in conditioner makes it frizzy and wetting it properly just seems like too much work. Adding more curl cream on dry hair doesn't work either. I guess I should be asking this in the wavy thread, but does anyone here have any suggestion? There are not that many styling products around specificly for wavy or curly hair where I live so I may need to order online.

I know you said rewetting it properly is too much work but I use a spray bottle to mist my hair and it immediately starts curling back up. It helps if I used gel or a styling products on day 1 because then the water reactivates it. Sorry for the obvious suggestion, just wasn't sure if you had tried that.

Thanks for the suggestion ReadingRenee . I've tried spraying my hair with water but maybe I just didn't use enough water, which resulted in frizz not curls.

Hmm maybe. Are you using the curly girl method? I finally seemingly conquered frizz (for the most part) by using some of their methods. The main reason my hair was frizzy is that it wasn't moisturized enough. "squish to condish", not using sulfates and using leave in conditioner has made a huge difference. Maybe if you start a separate thread you will get more answers and ideas. :)

Thanks for the suggestion... I do own a blow dryer that gave up and it is 'direct' meaning I connect it and starts. If I wanted to stop, I disconnect it ... I have also a padded brush... and I have tried to blow dry my hair (even when the bd was working) but the look was not very nice lol... the result was biiiig hair... no shape and again, not so nice ends ... lol... what I can tell you... maybe I am not that gppd with these tools hahahaha...

No I'm not doing curly girl. I've used some parts of it. I co-washed for a couple of years but my hair was straighter then. It was ok but I didn't see a difference. And I would oil, use leave-in conditioners and masks, didn't use heat etc. I basically did all the usual lhc stuff. I've tried sulfate-free shampoo but it was more drying than most sulfate shampoos I've used. I use fragrance products so there's not that many options. My hair is pixie lenght and it's not very dry at this length. I have tried and use some styling techniques, like not combing my hair when it's wet, scrunching, air-drying and diffusing.
My problem is not frizz after the first wash, only if I spritz dry hair with water on the second day. The curls separate and I figured I would need a light styling product to somewhat clumb then back together and not weight then down.

Yeah it takes a bit of practice to do it and I'm not perfect at it either. What I've found if my hair is longer I need to blow dry it in sections. I create enough tension with the brush, use high heat and direct the air from root to tip. Also some brushes work better than others. Round brushes are better if you want to curl your ends in or out. There are some good tutorials on youtube on how to blow dry your own hair. But using those hair dryer brushes is easier.

I opted for a haircut. I went back to the original shape of an even hem all around at collarbone length instead of angled from back to front like last time. Then the stylist added some layers to shag it up a little. I like it so much! It was washed the day before yesterday, but I worked up a sweat yesterday so I rinsed at the end of the day, used some conditioner on the length, rinsed. After squeezing some of the extra water out with a flannel pillowcase, I worked a little curl creme through it, then combed. It was so pretty when it dried - wavy, curly, and very little surface frizz. I was astonished because in the past when I have combed wet hair, it dried with enormous frizz. It must have been the curl creme!

Oh OK, I see now. Maybe watered down gel? Maybe experiment with leave in conditioners? Like maybe they won't all cause frizz? Sorry, those are my only ideas.

Sometimes I think I should, and I'm sure I will eventually (should I live so long), grow my hair out again. But I'm not ready! I am enjoying the added styling options that I have - namely using heat to straighten or curl without fear that I'll wreck my ends because I know they'll be cut off within 2-3 months. I really want to have a color melt done. I like the rose gold tones a lot but will consult with my stylist; something else might be better. I know I can't have too unnatural of a color due to job-hunting and interviews.

I have waist length + hair right now but I am seriously considering chopping to SL lately. It's something I want to do every few months but I tell my self not to. I'm afraid I will regret it but I also want a change. The upkeep for long curly hair is killer. I want to be free and light. I'm so conflicted. I'm afraid I'll regret the cut. For those of you who chopped a lot of hair, do you miss your long hair?

If this is something that you have been contemplating for a while, maybe you can compromise in the middle and cut back to BSL. That way you get a change and you won't lose too much length at once and end up with regret. You can always go shorter if you want to.

Every once in awhile, I see a photo of my long hair and feel a little pang of wishing I still had it. Then I remind myself that I could rarely wear it down, so it didn't really look like that. It looked like a handle sticking out of my head with a cloud of fly-aways all over. Bleh! At that point, I'm happy with my current length again.

Not at all! I love big changes in my hair. I chop mine off every 1.5-2 years. Chopped off my waist length hair to APL 13 months ago and I'm back to waist. I plan to chop it off next July/June now. BUT I damage my hair (kinda) with wearing it down (not that often but more than most of you), yearly dyeing and flat ironing about 10-12 times a year, so I'm not attached to the damaged hair. Also I'm pretty short (4'9) and my growth rate is a little over half an inch per month (I think) (based on dividing the length I gained by months) so growing it isn't that much of a tedious task for me. Also my hair is wavy and not beautifully curly like yours so I don't have that much shrinkage)

I've had no regrets. I sometimes miss using my hair toys, but I don't like how I look with my hair pulled back, so I'm not tempted to grow it back out. I've asked DBF if he misses my long hair and if he'd want me to grow it out again, and his response was a very firm "NO". I love having short bouncy hair. I was absolutely certain that doing a big chop was the right thing to do though, because I had been thinking about it for almost 2 years already. If you're not entirely sure, maybe just cut a few inches off and see how you feel? It might be all it takes to make your hair seem fun again.

I am only 3 hours away from my big chop - still researching all the hairstyle possibilities. I still haven't made up my mind 100%. Switching between a blunt cut that's a little shorter than APL with the back a little shorter than the front (I like how it makes hair poofier in the back) and asymmetrical cut with one side being much longer than the other. I'm also a little worried if the hairdresser has the necessary skills for my strange requests.

I did it! Just came home from the hairdresser's ...
And ... of course ... I didn't get exactly the haircut I wanted, which irritates me a bit. I wanted the back much shorter compared to the front and as it is, the front is only a tiny bit longer than the back - it's almost impossible to notice it unless I point it out. Darn it! But then ... the hairdresser I used was rather cheap, so I knew I couldn't expect miracles ... ya get what ya pay for, isn't that how it goes? :)
But the feeling of having such short hair (not even shoulder length) is absolutely amazeballs! It's light and airy and so soft! And super healthy, of course ... We'll see what happens after I color it and wash it (again), which is what I'm planning to do tonight :D

The whole "it's only hair, it'll grow back" thing never worked for me until I was finally ready. My husband used to say it all the time. Having joined LHC did help with my decision to do the big chop! Being here made me feel like there was always time and room to grow and long hair is not something that I couldn't ever have again if I cut.

I have to say I'm really enjoying my short(er) hair. Went from waist + to barely shoulder length and it's awesomesauce! It's still long enough so that I can put it into a ponytail and short enough that I can wear it down all the time without being bothered ... Love it. I've also freshened up my henna, so it just feels great. I'm now exploring styling options and it's fun! I feel like I'm rediscovering my hair - it behaves much differently when shorter and I especially love the new bigger volume around my face where my hair used to lay flat due to the heaviness of the length ... It's been a week since the big chop and I'm super happy with the result! I'm still going to get the back a tad shorter and maybe even get a tad more layers in the back to increase the poof, haha. So happy!

BLEACH! heh heh. I just bleached my hair for the first time in over ten years! My routine is actually not that much different, I just don't oil/hot oil anymore. Wreckinbelle, I feel exactly the same way. I got stuck in a mindset that the right thing to do was keep my hair as natural and in as good of condition as possible. It's like I expected to win a prize or something. Now I call it "drinking the LHC kool-aid"; haha. I've got a chin-length bob (grown out from a get-the-henna-gone pixie) and it's such an easy length. Because I'm now retired and not as concerned about how my hair looks for work, I'm going to try to grow it to shoulder for the heck of it. But I could just as easily stay with the bob and live happily ever after.
I do love cutting my own hair, which I've done for a very long time. It gives me pleasure and is satisfying. I'm not sure I can give up my scissor happy ways, but I'm going to try to moderate my need to solve a temporary hair problem by trimming and see if waiting it out longer might help.
The care routines I've learned on LHC over the years were life-changing and work very well on short hair as longer lengths, and for me that's the #1 reason I come here.

Way back on this thread, Shell said, "Really long hair is less like hair and more like an appendage--know what I mean?"
Oh my yes. Despite a couple of 2" trims in the past few years, my hair has steadily marched down to about waist length. It's in good shape, but thinner and up all the time. I've been collecting and enjoying hairtoys, but the truth is that I'm doing the same updos as I was at APL, without the advantage of being able to wear my hair down or in a half up more often. I'm seriously thinking of taking 4 or 5 inches off and going back to somewhere around BSL. I want to be able to use the hairtoys AND have the flexibility of wearing it down. (DH has been quietly hoping I'd come to this conclusion.) Glad I found this thread...

Meanwhile, I'm in the process of growing it back out to APL. I miss being able to throw it up into a lazy-wrap, or a proper braid. It turns out shoulder length isn't so awesome now that I'm not able to spend an hour straightening it. Well, now I know. Surely that's better than just blindly clinging to length out of fear?

My hair care routine hasn't changed much, but the way I style it has changed. I never used styling products or heat on my hair but now I often blow dry it or use a curling iron, and use styling products. I also never used to do anything to enhance my natural wave pattern because it looked messy to me when it was long and the waves were more stretched out. I just combed it straight and bunned or braided it.
I've started dyeing my hair with henna after I cut it. I wouldn't have dyed it when it was long, because it would have taken a long time to grow it out if I didn't the result.
Basically I'm not afraid of "ruining" my hair anymore.

Wow, I haven't posted here since April! I've been busy being stressed about things other than my hair I guess. It got to about APL, and I gave in and got a professional cut--she cut off between 1 and 2 inches, and it looked much better. Now, one month later, I'm not in love with it anymore. Sigh. I'm longing again for shoulder length hair. I really think that's my best length with hair this texture. With my curls, my hair just grows out, not down. I think that shorter hair takes advantage of my texture rather than fighting it. I have an appointment in 6 weeks, so I'll decide by then.

Wreckinbelle, I get it! I sometimes search for short cuts for thick wavy hair, imagining which ones I'd like. Right now I want to grow to about APL so that I can wear the hair sticks that my son made for me. But my heart isn't really in it.

Spidermom could you wear the sticks in half-up buns at your current length? Then you wouldn't have to grow longer.

I’ll post pics soon :)

It was time. It's a bit more difficult for cinnabuns, but most of my hairtoys will still work, and I already know I'll wear it down more often. YAY!

Thumbs up, Willowyn! Looking good!
I have decided to toss the bad conscious I get from teasing/back combing my hair. I love to have my crown teased and decided I will start doing that regularly. I have less than 10 cm to my goal length, and if my hair won't hold together till then then too bad. I used to tease a lot when I was younger and I never noticed it damaging (although I kept my hair pretty short).

Back in 2015 when I first discovered LHC, I was obsessed with growing my hair, as my profile still says, from SL to WL... and here I am now at SL again - made it to mid-back and had to cut all the damage... and a bit more, and a bit more (serial chopper here). This time I want to be a bit smarter and focus more on the health and self-care aspects then on length. Changing my habits - that's the important part. Really like the idea of this thread:heartbeat:

Thanks, Arctic and Spidermom. I'm really enjoying this length so much. I don't have to braid it or bun it to go to sleep (or have it get in the way if I don't). I can wear it down or in a half up. And ponytails are a thing again! The only down sides are that hairsticks are a bit tricky (I'm still doing this modified APL nautilus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohzSsbQhJK8), but sometimes I need a Good Hair Days "magic grip" hairpin (https://www.amazon.com/Good-Hair-Days-Crystal-Hairpins/dp/B003JN5ZEG/ref=sr_1_5_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1511578704&sr=1-5&keywords=hairpin%2Bplastic&th=1) to nail down the end), and that my large Ficcares feel a tad too big. I'm having to re-learn how to use one for a french twist. But since I have more medium clips than larges, this is OK. All in all, it was the right decision, and I'll probably stay at this length!

Okay all, I have a hair appointment in two weeks--I think I'm going to cut it to shoulder length or even a bit shorter. I've tried, really I have, and I'm just not enjoying it at APL and growing longer. What's the point if I don't like it? Since I quit my official dance group--who will complain?

Well boo! One of the reasons that I got my hair cut was because I don't like how I look with all my hair skinned back. I didn't want to go to work looking like that. It turns out that the clinic is warm enough to make me feel like I'm roasting most of the time, and I can't stand my blanket of hair on my neck, and for obvious reasons I can't have it in my face. So there I am with my hair all skinned back into braids so that it's off my neck and out of my face. I'd have to get it cut short-short to solve those problems, and I don't know if I'm ready for that. I have the feeling that I'll want to grow it out again one of these days, and I don't want to start from pixie. Been there, done that.

Spidermom, maybe you could sort of roll your front sections a bit, (maybe with your hir parted to a side), then pin the sections. I don't mean full blown victory rolls or anything, just a bit of volume and style. Then when the front is styled, bun/roll/twist the back.
What I do most often, is, (on side parter hair) I make 3 sections in the front, both sides plus the top section. I start with the top/bangs section, I twist it maybe 4-5 times, qhile also - ooh this is hard to explain - guiding it towards the side (as in opposed to a normal pompadour). I push it back very gently and try to make the shape smooth and slightly off center (because that suits my face better than centered poof). I pin it in place with invisible bobby pin placement. Then I twist the side section loosely few times, push the twist upwards a bit, pin with bobby pins so that the pin(s) is (mostly) invisible. On the side where the top section is, I incorporate the ends of the top twist into the side twist.I keep all the twist pretty small, with just tiny bit of volume, but if more volume suits other face shapes, then that would be a good way to go. I think I do have some old photos, if you'd need to see it to visualize.
This creates a very flattering style, at least to my face. It has a vintage feel but it's not a dated style. I sometimes use this as is, so it's a sort of half up or loose hair off the face style, sometimes I combine it with bun/braid,twist at the back. If you make a low bun, it has more vintage feel. And the more voluminous the rolls, the more they recemble victory rolls, the more vintage it is.

Re: skinned back hair:
An easy fix would be to style the front into headband braids, poufs, or victory rolls? Maybe that doesn't add enough visual interest, and you just prefer how it looks loose? If you like it loose around your face, you'll need to cut it shorter to keep it off your neck? The neck-touching length feels hot to me, and I found pixies very freeing. You do what makes you happy. :)

I used a heat tool today, first time in forever! I used my rotating brush, and I am glad to report it was very much useable even with my length (nearing upper BSL)! My hair got relatively straight (but with bounce) with slight surface frizz, but I got rid of that with silicone serum wiped from my hands over the canopy.
I might start doing this more often.

I cut my hair to a short blunt bob on December 16th... I am extremely happy with the length and shape... the greys look amazing (sorry to throw flowers at myself lol) against my dark base ... I don't have to style it because the more 'wild' the style the better it looks lol....
I will post pictures as soon as I get a chance... I think I will stay with this length for a while ... just trying to get some purple shampoo to make the greys look greyer lol...

I am back again considering a cut. At some point last year I kind of enjoyed longish hair again, and I was wearing it loose often. That resulted in damage and especially combined with flat iron. I am keeping it at around waist but feel meh about it. Again I am thinking about a salon cut.
I ordered elumen which seems to be stuck in Hungary. This may sound silly but I really don’t want to go into a salon before I dye (grays). I don’t want to hear them try and talk me into peroxide and ammonia dyes. And then lie about them being non damaging. So here I am again, stalling
Re the pulled back look. I do similar twists like Arctic only I use curling iron on the bangs and then just pin them back or sideways in varying directions. This gives many lovely variations imo. The sides I don’t heat style but rather just twist them back.

I've decided to let my hair grow a bit longer, like apl or bsl. I'm currently at shoulder length. I just want to try something different for a while, and I'd like to wear ponytails or braids every now and then. I can do twin french/dutch braids on my hair now, but they explode after a while.
I also bought a new heat tool recently, a rotating brush by Babyliss. I love it! It dries my hair in 30-40 minutes, and it gives me either lovely, voluminous waves, or relatively straight hair with flicked out ends.

The other day I cut from around BCL/TBL to exactly waist length. I get a fairly major cut every year or so, and I notice it has been getting shorter and shorter, and that I am completely fine with it. I didn't feel any regret at all when I saw it on the salon floor, which was rather surreal, as I was once rather obsessed with hair growth, like many LHCers.
Once I get close to tailbone, my hair begins to annoy me too much, and I get the urge to chop it all off. I'm glad I have always taken the standard advice to do it in stages, because waist length for me is quite manageable (it's not too heavy for my neck, works well in updos, and damage doesn't show from my regular activities).
Now that my hair isn't a source of constant annoyance and obligation to me, ironically I feel more inclined to look after it with oilings, updos, etc.

I used to be skeptical of the rotating brushes too, but I figured the technology might have improved a bit since I got one hopelessly stuck in my hair when I was 11. A friend was trying to style my hair with it, and we almost had to cut the brush out. Now that was scary! With this brush though, I don't think my hair will get stuck in it, even when it's longer. It's just a really good brush! :o

I can do a couple of different braided styles at my current length, which is just past collarbone. I also like to do 3 buns going down the back of my head. My hair is layered, so there is no one place that I can gather up a bun and have it stay. However, 3 stay. They're basically exploding cinnabuns.
What amuses the heck out of me is that I look pretty much the same every day as I did when my hair was ultra-long - hair pulled back and up.

Just seeing this thread for the first time, and it suits my interest of the moment. My hair is about to waist right now, but I've been thinking about cutting some of it off, maybe to around shoulder length or a couple of inches past. So it'll still be longish, but I definitely won't be growth-oriented.
Also, I'm thinking about cutting it myself. I found some directions somewhere for giving yourself a basic cut by putting your hair in a ponytail on top of your head and trimming from there. Sounds simple, but I'm kind of nervous about it. So it remains to be seen whether I work up the nerve to do it.

Upside down, it's been so long since I was in that situation, I can't remember anymore - sorry. I hope your scalp gets used to it quickly though!
I feel like having a bit larger trim, maybe 5 cm / 2 inches. I am juuust about to reach full BSL when stretched and having a rigid posture. Part of me also wants to have a catharsis trim, long bob maybe? Without getting into details, it might do me good to "cut someone out of my hair" - symbolically of course.
I'm not about to do either of these right now, but it's something that's been twirling in my head lately.

Hi all!!! Still super busy with barely any free time...
So, I cut my hair again back in February. This time another stylist in the same salon did it. He didn't do it right, not to my taste anyway. He blow dried it and flat ironed it even when I didn't ask for that ... why do stylists put the hairdrier so close to the scalp almost causing burns? I never understood that...
Regardless of the haircut not being 100% to my taste, I am super happy to have it this long because it is pretty low maintenance and I thinks it suits me the best.
I also have the issue with the scalp being sore if I put it up in a way that is not my ‘usual’

Hi all^^
Can I join you?
Five weeks ago I got a pixie cut. After an initial shock (which lasted for about 2 weeks) I am getting used to how I look with short hair. And I must say, I do enjoy the perks of easily stretching washes out from approx. 3 time a week to once a week with very little shampoo, air drying in 20 minutes, NO HAIR GETTING IN THW WAY OR IN MY FACE, no hair tickling my back, no hair stuck under my armpits, no hair stuck during cuddling. Thats pretty awesome.
I do, however, want to grow it back to a bob length again. I think that suits me and my life the best. Only bob length, that's not much for LHC.. On the other hand, it involves growing the main part of my hair, since I' only keeping the back short.. What do you think? Do I belong in this thread?

Also welcome to other new and returning folks!
As it happens, I have been growing my hair too, and am pretty near of reaching my long term + final goal of unstretched, full BSL. That's where I am going to stop growing. This is why I've been more quiet here, plus very busy with work. But not too long until I can get back to the no-more-growth mode!
ETA: I might purchase a flat iron at some point. I have come a long way making peace with my wiry/kinky hairs I have growing at few places from my scalp, but I think it would make me happier to have them more smooth. Maybe when I have reached my final goal length and can start monthly trims (heaven!!!) I might just do that....

Braids for sleeping only work for me when my hair is beyond APL (I would put in a single, simple braid, from the crown just up, so it would lay on the top of my pillow).

I've used this technique for trimming in the past. Works very well, just keep in mind you get long layers if you get the ponytail on top of your head and pull your hair upwards. If its what you want, it's perfect :) Otherwise, look for a different location for the ponytail.

So back to washing once in a week, which is really the best option for me.

I can put it in a ponytail if it gets in my way, which it does, but I don't like wearing it up. I miss the ease of a chin length bob. Quick to wash and dry, easy to style, always looks cute. I like how my hair looks now, but I'm just not sure if having longer hair is for me, since it's already annoying at this point. I still have to wash every other day because I bike to work and it makes me really sweaty. Maybe I'll try to braid it tomorrow and see if that makes me happier.

I’m enjoying my short cut so much. It makes me feel so much more feminine, and I’ve gotten so many amazing compliments since cutting it. It also only takes me 3-5 minutes for a shower.

Hey, I'm popping into this thread again--I'm so happy to see that it's still going. :) I have been looking back at past pictures of my collarbone length hair, and I'm seriously considering going back to it, but a bit more even and bob like. I have grown it to almost waist mostly because of dance and pressure from friends. I had to get a cut to reshape, but the result isn't looking great. It's back up to BSL, and frankly it looks like I'm growing out a perm--not a nice look. My hair is thick and heavy, and it pulls out the curl at the top. It's kinda curly on the bottom, but it really isn't nice. :(
Today is the day it either looks fab, or I cut it. I'll try to post a pic so you all can see what I mean.
I really appreciate this thread. Thanks to Arctic for starting it and all those who keep participating!!!

I think it might be a thread for me:)
I would like to have long hair- maximum mid-back - but sometimes I think it’s going to take really long time to get there as my hair is barely past my shoulders now.
I actually have the feeling that I would be happy at APL or BSL without much urge to grow it longer;)
I just need to relax with this growing thing.

With that fab advice in mind, I just left a message at my hair dresser's.

I am really happy with my hair right now. It is just shoulder length right now. I kind of want to stop growing it and get some shape cut into it, but I also love the look of the peacock twist with the fanned out hair and I don't want to lose that ability. I never take pictures of my hair anymore, but I will have to do it one of these days. I love shoulder length hair on me because its short enough to maintain body and fullness, but there is enough hair to pull back when I want it, and there is hair to frame my face. I'm not sure what I want to do.

If I hate it, which I won't, it will grown back in a few months to shoulder. She hasn't gotten back to me yet--she's got a baby and is super busy at the salon--so one of those things is keeping her occupied.

I'm happily growing again. One thing I learned with shoulder length hair is that it drives me crazy tickling my neck and getting in my face. I may have stated that in this thread before; if I have, sorry for the repeat. Now that my length is back to BSL, I can pull it all up and back, and while I'm not crazy about my overall appearance with my hair up and back, I'm much more comfortable because it isn't tickling me.

spidermom, I know what you mean. I personally am tired of it flying around everywhere and taking forever to dry. I'm hoping that it being shorter will help with that. My hair is thick enough and curly enough that it sticks out pretty far east-west. And, I'm not enjoying updos. If I were, I could keep it long.

This seems like a good thread to talk about the short hair sighting that I had today. I was in a coffee shop waiting for my dad, and I saw a tall, confident looking, beautiful woman stride by. She was laughing and talking with her friends and she had a pixie with a ruffle of waves on top. I swear it was like she was in slow motion, like in the movies when the guy looks at the girl. She saw me looking and we smiled at eachother. He hair looked AMAZING! Later I wished I had asked her where she gets it cut. After that though, the urge for a pixie has come back hard. Her hair and body type were very similar to mine so it was a double whammy.
Does that ever happen to anyone else?

Your hair looks very pretty now--I'd love to see your pixie. :) Supposedly, Mia Farrow wanted to get her hair cut very short, but no stylist would touch it, so she did it herself. I don't know if that's just mystique, but that's the story. I'm not sure I could cut a pixie on myself. I have an absolute ton of hair. :(

Im glad I am not the only one. I feel like I haven't felt like that about really long hair in a while. Maybe I should just go with the flow.. I wish hair didn't take so long to grow back out. :)
I did cut my own hair into a pixie when I was 18, and 21 and I got so many compliments. I have NO idea how I did it, and if it just looked good because I was young. I was so brave with the scissors back in those days. I had really thick hair back then too. Haha :) I just got lucky this time, but I don’t think I would have guts to do it again :p. For now I want to grow my hair longer.
I use a mousse or a gel and I had always similar results whether my hair was long or short. Most curl creams are a bit heavy to me, my hair is easily weighted down.

Yeah. A sick child is one thing, but if she was flaky before that, unless she's exceptionally good at a specific thing you need her to do, I'd consider switching stylists. Constantly switching appointment times/days pretty much defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

Can I join this thread? I’ve got a trim scheduled for January 2nd. I think I want to eventually grow it to BSL length but I’m going to be maintaining just above shoulder length for probably a year while I grow out a deep V nape undercut, bangs layers and too much thinning. Just really want to see and feel what my super thick hair looks like without being thinned into oblivion and layered like crazy. I’m also quite possibly never going to give up dying my roots to match my natural. I’m about 10-15% gray and at 34 I feel way too young for that much gray.

So, I added some very compact layers today--just in the last few inches--I still want to braid if I'm in the mood. I can do that--I tried it out the other day. I didn't post pics because it was sloppy, but when I officially do it--I will post pics. It is so nice to braid with no layers. I also did a ton of point cutting. I may need to do a bit more--it's drying right now.
We lost our soft water unit a few days ago, and it's just not in the budget to replace it. So, I'm going to get to see my hair without soft water for the first time in a decade. I mean, I go places, but this will be different. I can already tell it's less curly. It may also be less frizzy--so that's a win. Part of the reason I cut it is to take a curl vacation and wear it wavy. Now I won't have a choice.
Remind me to cancel my hair appointment for Saturday.

So, I added some very compact layers today--just in the last few inches--I still want to braid if I'm in the mood. I can do that--I tried it out the other day. Awesome! Sounds like a good way to add layers. We have really hard water here and I can barely handle soft water when we are traveling. It feels so different. I didn't realize it could have an effect on curliness. Interesting.

When I was in Ohio and had hard water, I discovered that a white vinegar rinse was absolutely essential. With our soft water here, vinegar makes my hair crazy fly-away, but in Ohio it eliminated the worst of that rough coated feeling.

I have always heard that it was great for hair. Apparently not--my hair seems to hate it! I think my son's hair (which is much curlier and now longer than mine) also seems to hate it. My hair is always a mess in Hawai'i too. I thought it was the humidity, but now I'm starting to think it's the water. Most of the places I visit (aside from Hawai'i) have hard water.

I used to use vinegar rinses, but quit when we moved into our new house. I guess this explains it. I may go back to them and older products now that the water softener is dead.

Of course--join us! Shoulder is a nice length, and it's always good to discover what your hair naturally looks like after having dramatic cuts. :)
Dramatic is one way to describe it lol. My mom is a hairdresser and has been cutting mine for the last 12 years since I moved back near her. I've had everything from a Pixie to BSL, in almost every colour under the sun. I'm swapping hairdressers so I can see what my hair looks like how I want it. Not my mom's version of how I want it. Ridiculously excited to just trim and maintain at shoulder length and see what it does. I've been a serial chopper/colour changer my whole life, I get bored and I change my hair. I don't think I've ever waited two weeks thinking about a hair change befor dong it. I think this is the most of my natural colour I've ever had in my hair.

I have always heard that too. I think I am going to do a vinegar rinse next time I wash my hair. It will be interesting to see how your hair reacts to your new water.

I went to the salon to get a long top fade/pixie type cut and came out looking like a 1940's German soldier with a weird lopsided bowl cut. I should never, ever went to a different salon when I found my regular stylist closed. After I locked myself in the bathroom and cried, I washed the styling gunk out and took the clippers to it. Its short, like almost bald on the sides/back and the top is now under a inch but at least its almost even. One side has a nice fade, the other just goes from short to longer with a large swath much short on that side then the other.
Ugg, I hate it. Not the short, I can deal with that, its the uneven and how high she made the fade. I showed her a picture but its like she totally disregarded it and gave me a typical mans fade instead. I mean, I know its not a common style for women here but come on, a trained stylish should be able to copy a photo, a nice big close up photo at that.
I plan on keeping it short for awhile though I need to grow out the uneven and gain some length on top. The sides and back I want to grow 1" or so with 5"- 6" on top, if I can pull off that look lol. I like long hair but short is more convenient for me and easier to care for. Plus its easier to keep my SD under control.
On a plus, my sides are almost pure white. Once all the henna is completely trimmed away, it will look really pretty.

Thinking about a cut. Currently at between APL and BSL. I wash my hair daily as that seems to work best for me but that means I'm blow drying daily or at least every other day. I think I'm just tired of the work and time this length takes. Thinking about cutting back to shoulder or collarbone length. Shorter drying time is appealing.

Obsidian, you are incredibly adventurous and brave. I bet your all white will positively glow when the henna's gone. I have just done an about-face on henna too and cut my hair back to a pixie. I'll grow it out using a demi reddish brown, which may take about 6 months based on the last time I did this. I was a henna evangelist for 10+ years, took a 2 year break to see how much gray I had, and then did henna again for the past three months. I concluded at this age it's too much work for my fast growing hair and I didn't like how henna behaved on my gray even after a few full head applications. I loved the straightening powers of henna, but I'm ready to accept and be happy with shorter wavy salt and pepper.

Hey nice to see the thread is going strong! :)
I am so sorry you are unhappy with your style Obsidian. That is one thing that scares me with short cuts. What if they get it wrong!
Sometimes I hate stylists.
I am cutting it to chin now basically. Iy grows so quickly. I love the straight look but last few weeks hve been letting the curls out to play, and I like that too. It is a nice change and they are very bouncy in this cut.
The salon I go to has several stylists and this last guy didn’t quite get the angled part of the style so it is more flat now... not a biggie but I prefer the angle. Not changing the stylist again
I should also do the keratine come end of holidays... ugh. I am very lazy about it. But it makes life easier...
Still debating should I color my hair or not. Grays are ok on most days but then sometimes I feel like they make me look very unpolished.

I wasn't cutting to remove henna, I just wanted it shorter. I was planning on transitioning my henna to a strawberry blond but since its almost gone, might as well give it up and I really like the white.
I still don't know how the stylist went from a symmetrical fade/pixie/faux hawk type cut to a asymmetrical mens style.
I hate it so much, I don't even want my hubby to see it. I was going to shave it all off this morning but he asked me not to. I ordered a slouch beanie so I can hide for awhile.

DaniGirl, I totally know what you mean--my mom, two uncles, two aunts, and a grandmother were all hairdressers--I grew up with free haircuts, but never had exactly what I wanted until I moved away from home! In rebellion I think I grew it past classic and left it totally natural, with a very occasional henna gloss. This is also why I tend to cut my own hair--it's the family business. ;)

I so wouldn’t trust myself with scissors near my hair. I got gum in it once and had a meltdown cutting it out.
I’m so not artistic like that at all.
Yeah I had my rebellion when I moved to university. Came home with it past BSL with box dye on it I thought my moms head was gonna implode. Then I had a baby who was grabby got fed up and told her to chop it to chin length and it’s never been that long since. It’s just so easy to change it so I do. So I’m taking a breath and breathing for a bit and I’m just going to maintain at shoulder while everything comes back in hopefully.

Oops, sorry I misunderstood. I can totally hear your outrage at what the stylist did. Did she know how deeply unhappy you were with it? I'm glad at the very least you can come here and talk about what a devastating hair experience it is. You're already coming up with ideas. I'd still be at the wailing on the floor stage.

I think the slouch beanie is a creative solution. The last time I had hair I hated, I learned some pretty ways to tie it up in a scarf. The nice thing about short hair is that you can almost see daily growth. I'll bet the white will be pretty. I love mine.

Well, Obsidian, thanks for posting these photos. Your description was good but the photos really make it real. Sounds like you’re a realist and moved quickly through denial, anger and acceptance. But still .... why can’t stylists step back when they’re in over their heads. You’ll make the best of it, but so sorry you have to deal with it. Wish I could make time speed up for you.

I'm sorry for your stylist mishap.
Last time this happened to me made me decide against going to stylists in the foreseeable future. It took half a year to be okay with my hair again, one of the reasons why I'm not going to leave it to somebody else again.
Lesson learned, so all good in the end.
Hope that in the end it will grow into something positive for you. Maybe growing out your whites a bit and taking your hair-faith in your own hands?

Nope, obsidian from the book obsidian butterfly by Laurell Kaye Hamilton.
From now on, only one stylist will ever touch my hair. I've been going to her for three years now and she is great. If she ever retires, I'll have to learn to cut my own.
I'm getting used to the new cut. With some make up and earrings, its not as bad. Of course I have to gel it into submission thats ok for now.

Well first haircut with a stylist other than my mom in 13 years.
It feels great she did exactly what I asked. We’ll see how it washes up on Sunday with my normal routine. But I’m loving my just above shoulder length lob.

Pictures are planned for Sunday after washing. This isn’t styled how I normally do it. Though she was awesome and was very gentle with my hair. I think my baseline picture should be with my hair how I normally wear it with my products just after wash. It was so easy to detangle and really minimal product in it which is a nice change.

Sounds great! I can't wait to see pics. After I got my hair professionally cut and styled in April of last year, it looked so different because of how she styled it. I wasn't patient though and had to wash it immediately. Hair dressers ALWAYS want to give me "big hair". I don't know why.
Glad you are happy with your cut!

I have to be patient. I wash my hair too much and it becomes an unmanageable ball of wurls and sticks out in every direction and just goes crazy. I can’t wash it more than twice a week, but I also can stretch it if I need to it’ll just be an oil bomb disaster, which drives me crazy especially in my bangs.
It’s not a bad style and it does suit me and isn’t dated. I’m just very much a minimal with my hair wash, air dry, a bit of gel for some scrunching for my waves and I’m good to go. I almost never blow dry unless it’s ridiculously cold and use heat maybe twice a month with a silicone based heat protector. So heat styled hair just doesn’t look the same as my natural wurls and air drying.
