Crown braid

Does anyone know how to do a crown braid? I been trying for hours and I have no idea how to start it off, it's so dang hard. How do I get the hair started by the ear? Also how does one keep it pinned with amish pins?

The crown braid is the ultimate style for me, I've been trying on and off for a year to do it. :p I'm no help, unfortunately.

I start at the back of my head and only add hair in from the bottom. I think it was Getoffmyskittle who told me to try it that way.

TorrinPaige has a fantastic tutorial on youtube for crown braids. I found her Lazy Crown Braid to be a good beginning, then I could move on to the 3 strand version.

I section a deep side part + the sides, let the back hang down and dutch braid it, trying to not pick up hair from another section(ie don't pick up hair from the back while you're still on the side, don't leave leftover hair from the side and pick it up on the back etc). When you've dutch braided all around and there's no more hair left to pick up, I'll finish it up with an english braid and pin it behind the first section I braided(the deep side part).

You can also start it right behind your ear, I'm just used to the side part.

When I'm not doing that, I'll just make two braids and pin them across the front of my head, but I think they're called Heidis.

I have only been able to do a real genuine crown braid once, and I followed the tutorial of Haartraum on youtube.

I like to do the "fake" crown braid, where you make two braids and then swoop them around the head :p (as you can see on my profile picture)

Another video tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3J9aGjX_tc) that might help. It's rightly a lace dutch braid since you only add hair on one side, but it gets the same look. Also if you aren't having success with amish pins, may I suggest a spin pin to hold the tail in place? It hasn't failed me yet, at least, and it only takes one.

Alternatively, if your hair is at fingertip length, why not coronet braid? Just a single english braid should reach all the way around your head at that length. Then you can pin as you like.

I didn't even hear of a coronet braid before lol but I wanted something that was all attached around my head so that it won't slip around or fall down on me when i'm cleaning n sleeping.

When I was doing this braid tho I got like 3 knots that turned so ugly real fast, hard in the middle and all literally knotted together at the ends. But after following this and adding alot of product in the final braid no knots and it's nice. I wanna do this braid all the time, It's perfect for cleaning and cooking actually.

I also really like this "woven crown" (https://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2009/10/23/luana-braids-woven-crown-variation/) based on "luana braids", because I can't really French/Dutch braid and this style is based on simple English-braiding technique. I can't manage to push the braids under the pockets created by the smaller braids, but I use those smaller braids as a grippy foundation, which I can use for pinning the crown braids around. I tend to use medium sized claw-clips for coronets, but long Amish pins and spin pins should probably work well, too. :)

I just find it simpler to do two Ductchbraids/cornrows or two flat twists and tuck them in.

I used this video below,, much simpler for me . I've been doing crown braid since I started this thread and aint no way in hell am I ever leaving it down or doing any other style again! if I can help it anyway. I know for sure this is gonna be my style even after my hair wash as this is done so much easier when I have wet hair and my hands are smothered in conditioner, which is very strange for my hair. Usually I can't even touch my hair when it's wet or *snap*:|

I really gotta give it to someone who masters Haartrums video, god dang her video was so hard I got 3 knots in my hair from trying to follow her and my braid came out so wonky. I had to redo it 50 times and I gave up on hers.
