There's so much you can do with long hair, let's prove it! Join me doing a different hairstyle every day for a month (or a week, or two, or whatever...)
Rules:
1) Each day wear a different hairstyle. Variations on a style count as "different." E.g. Side english braid vs. english braid down the back, PLain cinnabun vs. cinnabun with an accent braid or twist, etc.
2) You must try at least 4 different styles (one per week). Learn a new braid or bun, try out a fake bob... Have fun learning something new!
3) Check back in this thread periodically, regaling us with tales of your style adventures

Optional:
1) Take pictures and post in the thread for all the inspiration and eye candy!

I'll start us off:
Day 1: Hair down with micro braid head band and side accent

Wow! You are truly adventurous! I freely admit that I am way to lazy for something like this. I hope you find other non-lazy folks who will join you though, as this really is a nice idea. Have fun with it!

Ack! My reply disappeared! I think I'm going to try this. :) I'm bad about doing a lazy nautilus constantly and not being more creative.

Ooh I love to try this. I have been contemplating changing my daily style to reduce damage. Okay I am in. Now to think of protective hair styles for my length.

I'm in! I challenge myself to change my updo every other day for 2 weeks. I'm fumblefingered and impatient. Also, I've grown out of my standard go to updos. Time to learn something new.

Day 1: A folded, not twisted cinnabun on top of my head held with a Ficcare.

I'm in, I need to try out more hairstyles, I just so the same buns over and over. I'm going to try to do a different hairstyle every day for the next two weeks, starting today with a celtic knot bun.

Today I wore a lace-braid which ended in a reversal bun:

Today I wore a dutch braid which was wraped in a Nautilus bun

Day 3: My new style for week one: a nautilus bun with my brand new (to me) WWC stick. I've struggled doing the nautilus for YEARS, and finally figured it out. I want to wear it again, so I guess I'll do a variation on it soon.

Day 4: Chinese bun

Maybe go for a week or too? Styles that would (probably work at your length: English/french/dutch/rope/hauser/fishtail braid, cinbabun, seashell bun, treble cord bun, disc bun, infinity bun (depends on your thickness), lazy wrap bun, Chinese bun/braided Chinese bun. Add twists and/or micro braids to these, vary the placement, etc. And you'd easily get a week or two. Also flips, fake fishtail, braided buns, zipper beaid, bubble braid, bun hawk, twin buns, milk maid braid, pigtails, double braids, down, half up (variations with any of the store mentioned styles), and I Bet you could get there weeks, and probably thirty days!

I figured I'd check in weekly, but my memory isn't strong enough to last an entire week...

So, day 1: Pull through braided pony
day 2: Plain old cinnabun (I feel 'bad' for this one, I was hoping to keep my go-to styles for the end of the 30 day challenge)

So people count a different-shaped bun as a different hairstyle? To me, a bun is a bun is a bun.

For the purpose of this challenge, yes. In reality, all different buns are variations on the category "bun," And we are counting variations as different styles, so different shaped buns do count.

Add a french braid to a bun you've already done, or a twist, micro braids, etc. Others: milkmaid braids, braided headband (lace, dutch french, english, etc.)......

Wispe your hair is so awesome! I love how your roots blend in perfectly with your braids.
Also on a different subject, what are those things called for your earrings? I see you have these kind of covers, and it looks like it 'blocks' the point part of the earring, right? I'm still trying to find a way to sleep with my earrings because I always forget to take them out or put them back in. Once I take them out I'll have no earrings for like a week until somebody points it out... I'd love to have those covers so I won't stab myself in my sleep xD

Hybris your hair is so thick and shiny, that's amazing ;o

Here's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lenvSzexGbM) the video and list of styles for April, if you want to be prepared for the rest of the days! It's really going to be a challenge for me, not because of the styles (I think I can manage them all) but because I'm used to wearing my hair down on wash days, and never up for so many consecutive days.

Thank you! About the earrings - depends on if you mean my lobe jewelry or my conch jewelry? I actually have stretched lobes - my jewelry is 6mm opalite glass (https://www.bodyartforms.com/productdetails.asp?ProductID=13633) right now. Though I usually sleep with my lobes empty anyway, for comfort purposes. I used to wear 12mm plugs and those are not comfy to sleep in- but I had to downsize after eczema made my ears swell anyway, but now at a smaller size I occasionally forget to take my plugs out before bed and it's never been uncomfortable yet. The other jewelry you can see is the back of my conch piercing. I wear anatometal jewelry in that one; a straight 14 gauge internally threaded post and I can swap the jewelry on either end whenever I like (but tbh I never change this out). Currently wearing a gold flower inside the bowl of my ear and a 4mm prong-set white opal on the back. (closer-ups x (http://i.imgur.com/6JcVJ4Q.jpg?1) x (http://i.imgur.com/YJxpeyG.jpg?1)) Before I bought the flower I wore the opal on the front and a little 2mm metal ball on the back, also super comfy. Another option is flat-back style labrets (like neometal threadless if you can get your hands on that?). Seamless/twist-apart hoops might also be comfy if you're not into studs?

Ooooh that's what it is? Those are really nice. I don't have stretched earlobes tho. Those are really lovely, I've actually considered getting the flower piercing myself like two weeks ago. I passed because I forgot my wallet lmao. But yeah, those look really nice especially with your hair!

I'm going to give torrin's #30daysofhairstyles challenge a go too, although I'm going to be a day behind (for my time zone) so I can watch her videos the night before I do them.

So today's the French braid, which I'm kind of crap at. It doesn't actually look too bad from the side or back (at least if you don't look closely), but it doesn't look great from the front. But I'm home doing laundry and cleaning today, so I'm just going to go with it. And I bunned the tail to help hide the pooch at the bottom where I can't seem to get it to hold tightly. (Any advice on this? I tried crossing over the last bits I added in to opposite sides, but it still went loose. Maybe I just need more practice?)

Haha yep, I have problems with regular earrings and I wanted to wear stone and pretty glass so I stretched up. I'll probably stretch back up again at some point, but for now just maintaining where I am. Good luck with jewelry searching! (:

Back to the topic at hand, I'm sitting here looking at this list and trying to plan out my wash days in advance; I don't wash on the same schedule as she does and I want to make sure I have clean-enough hair for certain styles and dirty/grippy enough hair for others. There's also several styles I would want curls for and I'll need to wet set my hair the night before for those.

hobbitloccks I've been wearing a lot of LWBs lately too; I'm hoping to break myself of the habit this month. Though I also bunned my braid about halfway through the day, just better to keep it out of the way sometimes.

Dante It's probably just a matter of practice and getting the tension right when you do the crossover trick - I had to re-do my first try after I totally failed to get the pooch contained. But then I also forgot to do the crossover trick both times. I find dutch braids muuch easier to get the tension correct on, but I just confuse myself doing it french.

Yep, I braided it in after all the rest of my hair was in the braid- you can actually see where the paranda starts if you look at the right side pictures, I didn't entirely get that bit covered up when I wrapped it around.

I think the point is more to do a different hairstyle every day of April, and that you don't have to follow the suggested styles if you don't want to (or can't!) wear them.

I was going to do a braided crown half-up but I tried three or four different things and none of them were working, so I did this instead: It's like three turns of a french braid, pinned down, with my front layers/bangs pulled through and pinned around it. I had like 6 pins in there but I took them all out an hour ago and my hair is still staying. It's humid ('bout to storm) and my hair has frizzed a bit so I figure that combined with the texture from the waves has kept it up. When I was trying to do it this morning it was too slippery to hold! IDK what my hair is up to!

Reyesuela- I like that hairtoy with that bun. I've seen those before but wasn't sure what to do with them. It looks cool!

I switched day 4 and 5 of TorrinPaige's 30 day challenge to better match my wash schedule, so I'm wearing a half up today (you can see it on my instagram (https://www.instagram.com/hobbitlocks/)if you want). I can't remember the last time I wore my hair down/half down the whole day, but so far so good (it's still morning where I am though ;))

Today's Dutch braids! I quite like this, took me a while to do though as I spent a lot of time trying things out after the initial braids at the top. It's really windy here today so hoping it hold up okay when I go out later.
I tried four different things for half-up day before settling on my final style; I really like what you came up with in the end though! And that ribbon is perfect in your hair, too.

-snip-

My day 4 hair up. I don't wear a lot of half ups any more, just find it annoying to have hair out at work. As much as I expect tomorrow's dutch braid to take me ages (French and Dutch braids are hard for me), I am looking forward to havmy hair out of the way.
Super neat style! I struggled wearing mine down on half-up day as well; it was really windy outside and just humid enough to give me a bit of frizz. I bunned my tail today just to keep it out of trouble.

Oh, I never thought about using one of those toys over an oblong bun - If i ever get one of those I'll have to keep that in mind. Really neat way to style it!

My first ever Dutch braid for day 5
http://i68.tinypic.com/35bcylt.jpg
I spent about 40 minutes doing it (well, redoing it) until I thought my shoulders were doing to give out, and I bunned the bottom mostly because of the rain but also partly as I didn't want to have to do any more braiding!

I don't know if I've got it in me to do a combo braid tomorrow, it just looks way too far beyond my abilities.

April 6th, 2017, 06:26 AM
If you can French braid, you can do the combo braid. You could start the French braid behind you ears/half way down your head so it won't take as long or be so tiring?

Here's my combo braid for today. Bunned because I want my ends out of the way today.

Days 6 and 7 done. Both were minor fails - I tried all the fishtailing on Thursday and didn't get a neat, tight result like I wanted. But it looked complicated so it's alright. Todays' suggested style I did not have enough hair to do as intended, so I had to modify it, and even that was off and uncomfortable to wear. I ended up wearing a modified chinese bun, but with rope braided tails and I kept out a bang section to 'swoop' into it (although minor fail there too, LOL). It's comfy and a new style to me so I'm alright with it.

Day 7 vintage updo. Really not my cup of tea, although I tend to like vintage styles. And I don't think tomorrow's style will be great for me either but I'll give it a go. Probably will oil it in the morning prior to washing tomorrow evening, so will want buns to keep it up anyway.

Today's didn't work great for me either. It looked okay from behind, but pretty stern front on. Clean hair here requires a softer look. I posted on Instagram though and redid in a cinnamonbun with some Dutch lace in front. I kinda want to go try the combo braid again ... if I spend another 20 minutes in front of the mirror this morning my husband might have a fit!

I missed a few days, but I'm back on the train now. I'm enjoying the braided regency bun. I also don't like a center part on myself so I did a side part with a lace three strand braid on one side and just a three strand braid on the smaller side of the part. The braids aren't exactly the same size, but I don't think it's that obvious, at least not in this picture (https://www.instagram.com/p/BStpjt_hduf/?taken-by=hobbitlocks).

Tomorrow's bun is a little too floofy for me to wear to a meeting I have, so I'll probably trade.

Aw I'm sorry it didn't work for you! I was honestly surprised mine held up as well as it did, considering my hair is also super fine and slippery. No idea if I'll be able to replicate it again... I expected a lot more sag than what I got (and it did sag, about two inches down by the end of the day despite anchoring it high just in case. Still looked nice though). I braided it tight to the scalp also, and pancaked the tail of it. The original style (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND5dJXnBs2k) is supposed to be pinned down all along the sides of the folded braids; perhaps you could try that and see if you can get a flexi to stay purely decoratively?

Kitty is adorable, but very sharp. And a terror to my hair, lol. :taz: Thank you!

Wispe that is absolutely elegant. How do you do that?

Basically this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND5dJXnBs2k) only I didn't have decorative pins and my braids are flat rather than thick and fluffed up like torrin's so I did it differently. Make a braid (in my case, a dutch braid, snugly braided at the scalp and pancake the tail), then fold it upwards rather than tucking it under. Double it up/sandwich the tail between your head and the folded part of the braid. (I used one bobby pin to keep my tassel in place) Insert flexi. Make sure the stick part goes through both the folded braid and the one on your scalp on both entry and exit points, and try to keep it centered. Pray it doesn't sag! (it did, but not immediately and it held all day anyway. My hair is too slippery for braids not to slip and it actually held up better than anticipated). If the toy is too heavy or it wants to sag you could try like I suggested above and pin around the edges like the original tutorial says to do, and use your toy decoratively. Good luck if you try! :blossom:

Yeah I had tried it out the night before on my sleep braid when I had the idea first and it totally didn't hold at all, I thought I was going to have to bobby pin it for hold (and that flexi was a large, so I thought it'd be too heavy for sure). Guess I lucked out; I totally don't expect to be able to replicate the look without bobby pins again (at least not consistently). I agree, it's totally worth finding a workaround if you want to wear a certain toy work even if it is only decoratively. I might prefer my hairtoy also holds the style but if I need to pin it to make it work, then that's what I do.

Just to throw it out there; this style might hold better with a paranda braided in there. And then you can have braidwaves the next day all the way to the ends... /gonna try this myself... sometime.

ETA: Today's hair is Sansa's hairstyle during the joust (plus bangs because I do what I want). I had to drive my brother in to school before I'd had a chance to do my hair, so I totally ended up out in public with my hair rolled up and lumpily squashed under a scarf. I'm going to pretend nobody actually saw me like that. Of course, now that my hair is done I'm not leaving the house again today, so I've paired this hairstyle with my rattiest pair of leggings. I'm totally nailing the whole look, right? LOL

These are nice! I'll be keeping an eye out for your version of the klassy 'do - I surprised myself with how much I liked it. I'd rather not have to use a bun form and elastics, but that's just me being odd. When the month is over I might give it another go with different buns as the base and see if any of them are big enough to suit while still leaving enough tails out to pincurl. Might need more length before I can ditch the bunform.

Since I didn't expect to like this bun I wasn't planning to post pics of it, but oh well. I like that having leftover curls means it's much easier to place and pin my sort-of bangs into an aesthetically-pleasing swoop. So here's day 14.

Last three days: pinned up dutch braids (I overstretched my wash day to have fresh hair for Easter), a french fishtail (after I accidentally caught my purse in my more elaborate updo and had to re-do as I left the house), and today's cinnabun. My hair hasn't been subjected to so many elastics in such a short period of time possibly ever before, and it's not entirely happy about it. Whoops!

The shanghai swirl looks great!

For day 19 my hair refused to hold a style (it literally slithered out after a few minutes... then out of the next 12 versions I tried). I ended up in a knot bun with my bangs rope braided back, and that held for... about an hour, before things started going loose again. Like whoa, hair! But then somehow while I made dinner I was able to throw it up into a pinless nautilus and it stayed for 4 hours, which was insane because I wasn't able to get my nautilus to hold pinless all this past month. ??? I don't know what my hair is up to lately.

I'm definitely giving this style another try when my hair is better behaved. Here's three of the tries my hair spit out. I will say 3-strand rope braids/twists hold better and are less expload-y than 2-strand rope/twists are, at least on me. I was so sad this style didn't hold up because I've been excitedly waiting to wear 3 strand ropes ever since I learned how to do them earlier this month.

Thank you! And wow, three strand rope braid - what type of dark magic is that? :magic:

I've never been able to get a painless nautilus to hold either, so how funny that your would do after being so slippy. Guess hair really does have a mind of its own!

Not as complicated as I thought it'd be - and it doesn't unwind/go slack nearly as much as 2 strands do so I'm happy.
Eh, pretty sure I need to clarify my hair since it's been a little odd lately. But if I do that I'll strip out some of the pink in my underlayer and I don't feel like re-dying it yet so I'm putting that off. Ah, priorities. 8)

ETA: Today I did a crown braid instead of the Madora because otherwise my braid tails are tiny where they cross in the front, and it's not my best look.

Nice, I have that same CMW pink twisted stick. Did you use and elastic as the base?

Rose water is such a pretty acrylic, no? Also, nope, I did a faux french braid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kOyGD_KOoA) at the base. I prefer not to use elastics in stick-held buns as I can never seem to hide them (as it is, you can see the gold hairband I used to tie the braid off peeking out)

I'm jumping in here in the middle, but I'm really enjoying learning a new style every day. I don't think I'm able to put a picture up, though, because I'm too new.

You can use a photo hosting site to link a photo. After 25 posts I think you can use albums on here. I'm mostly mobile so tend to use photo hosting as that's actually easier for me than the LHC albums when posting from a mobile. :)
