Sorry if this has already been posted/answered, I have searched but couldn't find anything. I've recently dyed my bleached hair dark violet with Brite Organix semi permanent dye and I hate how much it bleeds and fades with washing. I wash with cold water and a cleansing conditioner which helps a little. According to Google using vinegar (white or acv, doesn't seem to matter) as a rinse after dying and after each wash will help to lock in the dye and maintain the colour. So my question is, have any of you lovely ladies and gentlemen who dye your hair crazy colours tried a vinegar rinse and if so, does it work? Which vinegar and dilution do you use and did you notice any side effects? I'm reluctant to just go ahead and try it in case I destroy my hair lol. Please help!

You should check out the ISO colorful longhairs thread. It had many knowledgeable members.

I'm not sure if it helps maintain the color but it does make my hair feel nicer. I use a splash of white vinegar in a pitcher of water, twice, just to make sure I get all my hair saturated. I let it sit for about a minute, then give it a quick rinse. Any residual vinegar smell will go away once your hair dries. I've tried ACV; it didn't seem to work any better and white vinegar is way cheaper.
If you use too strong of a dilution it might be bad for your hair, but a weak dilution should be okay.
ETA: I do get quite a bit of color bleed while rinsing with the vinegar, but it doesn't seem to make it fade any faster. Honestly, I mostly use it for the other effects, rather than color retention.

Have you tried mixing some of the dye you use into your conditioner? I used to do that to help keep the colour fresher between dyes when I coloured my hair.

Thanks for your help ladies :) Thanks Miata, that sounds a lot better than using vinegar!

I know this is the case for clothes. If you're worried about the colors bleeding, put it in cold water or cold water + vinegar. It will stop further bleeding. I am not sure how this will work out for hair, though...

If you do try vinegar, skip the acv because it can give red tones to light hair. Stick with white vinegar.

I have dyed tips and usually use vinegar when I wash. But what helps most for keeping the colour from fading is obviously stretching washes as much as you can. I also add a bit of dye to my conditioner. And I try to use diluted shampoo or to wash with conditioner; harsh shampooing obviously strips the colour a lot.
