View Full Version : September 2016 - L-finity Bun

I've heard this one described as a different construction for a figure 8. I find it works well at nape. The first video I saw of this was made by Waitingsolong but that disappeared a few years ago so I made a video for it a couple years ago, which was surprisingly the only video that came up when searching for this bun. Hey video people!

I do a variation on this. When my hair was shorter I used it all of the time since it was the only thing that held some of the heavier sticks in my fine thin hair....

I love this bun! :D I wear it practically every day, but I just start with a simple braid instead of loose hair. I think it's very similar to Spidermom's (double-loop LWB) bun in terms of excellent weight distribution thanks to 2 loops.

Just in case, here is WaitingSoLong's tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fzn4gNWIVQ - this one goes above fingers rather than under and it might work for some people (I found this method a bit more secure for me with higher placement, less likely to slide on me and less bothersome on the neck...)

WSL also has a double-wrapped variation of this bun (good for very long hair that's hard to balance and stabilize with single wrappings): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3EcIu22znA

BTW, I noticed this bun is sometimes called "Mirrored Spidermom's bun": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llpyxs6d4o0 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqC7LYOqzhE

I've been doing this bun a few times lately. I twist mine because it won't stay otherwise

Unfortunately I think this is a fail on me. Wrapping around 1 finger and my thumb is too tight, 2 fingers and my thumb is secure but doesn't look right, and 3 fingers and my thumb looks right but is not secure enough for my liking. Boo.

It worked when I tried it last night just before bed, but today when I needed it to stay, it refused. I'll try again in a few days. Surely my hair can't just refuse to cooperate with this one!

I like it. I keep having to watch the video or I wrap it wrong... I'm also wondering whether I put the stick through the wrong bit of the loop. It stays though so

I did it!

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=24509&d=1473180380

I've only succeeded with a fork though -- so far with a stick it's either been way too tight or way too loose. I think I'll keep doing this one, so hopefully I'll figure it out with a stick eventually.

I wore this to work the other day (forgot to take a pic!) with my latest three prong fork, though I find sticks work pretty well with it too.

I only come down this way sporadically because I kept being put off by my slippery almost-thick hair being too short to do most of the monthly styles, but I'm glad I did this month because this works REALLY WELL! It's a bit of a head eater for me, though.

I've been shaking my head around trying to dislodge it but it won't budge, and it doesn't feel particularly tight. :disco:

If you find the trick, let us know. I too can get only forks to work.

I decided to try it with a stick this morning because one of my Ead sticks matches the dress I'm wearing really well and voila! :magic: It worked! My hair is cleaner (and therefore more slippery) than it was this weekend which may be contributing somehow? It's holding very well.

Wow, gorgeous L-Infinities, everyone! :crush:

It's so cool that so many folks can do this successfully! :thud: It's one of those buns that seems to require extra length for me, certainly past LWB manageability (after all, it takes quite a lot of length to create 2 loops with and then still have extra length left to wrap around the base with). But it provides excellent weight distribution thanks to that extra loop. ;)

I've been trying to add a third loop by wrapping over more fingers (and switching directions, as with the first 2 loops, of course) and using 2 sticks to hold down the loops, but that doesn't hold for long for me, sadly... maybe I just need more practice... :hmm:

This is so pretty style on all of you! Pretty enough that I needed to try it with my shorter hair! :D I probably didn't follow the instruction very well as I did this out of memory, after watching the video once a week ago, so it might not actually be L-infinity at all, ha ha. But I liked how it turned out to be! Might become my new favourite half-up bun!

Of course, it fell out 20 minutes later. And I've redone it again, I'll keep playing with it though! My hair is so fine, hard to hold.

Mine doesn't much look like Neko's, even though I followed the instructions, but whatever, it's pretty secure even with a thinner stick.

I thought this would be really nice with a rope braid, but it didn't come out quite right... I think maybe I have too much taper? Maybe someone else will be inspired to try it with a braid and have more success than me. :)

But I like the way it looks untwisted, although it somehow still doesn't look like it's supposed to. It's staying put though, so I'm calling it a win:

I like this bun! I don't have many buns that I wear at the nape, which I like, not to mention the horizontal nature of this bun means I can actually use some of my longer sticks!

Here was my first failed attempt this morning. It was more like a stretched LWB:

And then success(!):
