Baseball cap/hairstick bun success!

I participate in recreation where I need to wear a cap sometimes. I have tried many times to do the cap/ bun thing and have not been happy. I can do a side braid and be happy.

But I tried this out today and it worked! This is my UnderArmour ball cap with Velcro patch port in front. It is not fitted, but has the characteristic half circle opening at the back.

I put the cap on like I wanted first. Then made a very low nautilus bun. The middle and top of the bun overlapped the opening. Then I inserted the hairstick about 11:00 position, grabbing scalp hair in the open half circle. Hairstick moves down towards 4:00 position (capturing the cap strap as well as hair) and exits the bun underneath the level of the cap. A second hairstick can be inserted close, maybe 10:00 entry position.

I like it! Comfy and appealing to look at, I think.

I've had success doing a lazy wrap bun with a baseball cap -- I put my hair through the half moon opening and then make a lazy wrap bun with it, threading the stick through the scalp hair that is exposed in the half moon in back. I will try to take a picture of it next time I wear it. I like your nautilus!

One pro/con to this method is that your hair and the hat are now intermingled. You won't lose your hat so easily with wind gusts. However, if you need to remove your hat during a national anthem situation or prayer, it's gonna be a fail. Or at least wait until after that part to do the bun.

When my hair gets a bit longer, I'm going to aim to do the nautilus base first (with at least one stick) then wrap the remaining length coiled around the outside of the bun.

Well, in my version, you are not bunning with hair THROUGH it, you are bunning with hair over it. The hairstick does go through it, Starting through the scalp hair and under the cap strap.

To clarify, my hair is loose when I put on the cap. I grab the hair and bun low. The nautilus gets placed up over the hole.

I might also try a flipped Cinnabun or a braided bun with this method.

I have previously tried putting the hair through the hole first, and didn't like the result.

Although I just want to point out that this is not how you wanna put up your hair if you have to wear a cap for work in an environment where you have moving machinery where the cap might get stuck...

Oh no! That would be a bad deal, for sure.


In this version though, if a quick release is desired, just remove the hair sticks quickly and this a done deal. Wouldn't count on this for safety concerns, you are right.

I never liked the result after putting the hair through the hole... This way (coming up from underneath) for me is so much better.

I seriously may adopt this, because my bun is starting to get bulky for fitting under my wide-brimmed hat, even when I make something spread out horizontally like an L-infinity bun. Love the concept, and I can handle the idea of pinning the hat to my head. I'll just invoke my right as a female to remain hatted because the hat and my hair are pinned together. :D

What a great idea! When it warms up here I'll try that with some hats I own that have cutouts for ponies. Even with my sparse hair, at hip it's too much to work well going through the smaller holes. And then there isn't much area to anchor to. Thanks for sharing your brilliance, WD!

One question: is there any tangling from top of the bun overlapping on strap during athletic activities, or is it OK? (I just find that my hair doesn't like rubbing against any textiles (on collars, scarves, hats...), but I've never tried this bun-over-strap structure...)

Could use a DIY silk sheath for the strap, maybe.

It doesn't move much, but I am not being super athletic. Mostly hiking, or shooting. (Shooting instructor noticed and gave more than once a thumbs up on the deadly things she noticed I always wear in my hair haha. With that being said, this works woth a ficcare too, I just discovered).

My hair is not that heavy, and I have noticed nothing in terms of tangles with this method. But then again, it's oiled well at the moment.

That's a Quattro fork, and it used to have a stone topper but the resin holding the topper on doesn't like the heat in Texas so it came off!
