Hi hair-friends
So my hair is 2a/b and just meets the classification for iii (4.5 inch circumference when in a ponytail) I find that these two things combined give me a couple management problems but I'll just start with the one.
Tangle Teezers and boar bristle brushes don't work for me. The combination of short + dense bristles means that they just can't penetrate all of my hair, which I find then leaves me with a smooth-ish top layer but then tangled and ratted underneath, which is no good, obviously.
I use a wide-tooth comb for pretty much everything now, and that seems to work fine, but I would like to be able to oil my hair occasionally, but are there tools/techniques that I can use to make sure I can actually distribute the oil to all of my hair, and not just move it around the top layer? Is the solution just to section off my hair into thinner layers?

You might try a wood-bristle brush. Their bristles are spaced fairly far apart and will still distribute oil, just not as readily as boar. I don't remember the brand, but there is a German company that makes some really nice ones.
My bamboo bristle detangling brush has nubs on the end, which you will want to avoid. Just a plain rounded tip that won't grab and yank any hairs should work for you.

A BBB with nylon (not without) might help. But with 2 hair, I wouldn't go the route of a BBB. The wooden bristle brush suggested above is a far better solution. Also, I have iii hair and for me a TT is magic; yes you need to go through a few times, but it's worth it as it doesn't snag the hair like other brushes often do.
Also Denman brushes are quite popular too. I avoid them because a brush like that pulls at my roots. I have the wide teeth version and even that snags my hair.

I have iii too, and both BBB and TT have worked for me, but that might be because I brush my hair in parts. If I try to brush just from the top it would never work, I have to brush underneath separately. I also use wooden combs for oil distribution and they work wonderfully. I have one very wide toothed which I don't use for oil distribution, but I have one medium toothed and several thin toothed combs, and they all work well (cleaning them is pain in the butt, tho).

When I comb/brush at the end of the week, I separate the hair into two sections, and comb/brush with my TT separately. It works great that way. I have to go through with the TT a few times, but at least it doesn't tug at my roots the way most other brushes do. BBB drags and schleps, Denman outright pulls. A wooden bristle brush is OK too, it's up there with my TT.

Thanks for the suggestions, all! Maybe I will try and revisit my TT with hair sectioning and look into getting a wooden tooth comb!

There are also some brushes with extra long pins/tines. Maybe not BBBs but at least Tangle Teeser and wooden brushes (like Widu and Tek).
