View Full Version : August 2016 - Ammonite Bun

August 2nd, 2016, 01:12 PM
Saige posted a lovely picture of a herringbone/fishtail braid pinned up in a Cinnabun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=110540&p=3273787&viewfull=1#post3273787) and others have dubbed it the Ammonite Bun.

Have fun!

:hmm: Looks like I need to learn how to fishtail braid so I can participate in one of these monthly beauties!

Ammonites are my second favourite fossil! Alas, my attempts at making the base braid have all ended in tears...well maybe just tangles. I need a local meet so I can talk someone into braiding several feet of hair so I can try this one

Copying myself from another thread. Here are links to tutorials which show quicker methods for fishtail braids, a bit different than the original (and slower) method.

[...] quicker methods to do both normal and reverse fishtail braids? I love the methods, they speed up the process so much! Here are some links to tutorials:

Normal fishtail (quick method): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WeYwH9fk3o
Reverse fishtail (quick method): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTa4EA3qxrQ
Then there is the faux-fishtail, which is also quick and easy (yet also a bit messy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA0b30GLP7Y

Negative side of these, especially the two first ones, is that they are difficult to do at the back of the head, easy to do over the shoulder. So if one wants the braid to start at the middle of the nape, one needs to still start the braid with the traditional method.

I have ammonite sticks! This is a must-do!!!

I didn't realize the "quick" method was a method at all. I've been doing that this whole time I've known how to fishtail because it just made sense to do it that way instead of one section at a time.

Ohh that would be adorable! Make it so Mrs. Diva!

I wanna try this some day! :) Though it won't look as good in my hair since it's a lot shorter:p

Prepare for some picspam of a bun that may or may not resemble an "ammonite bun."

And then because I was unhappy with the pinned version, I tried to do a Jamie Leigh style bun with the fishtail:

The issue may have been my fishtail. I don't think it was fishtail-y enough. I'll have to retry.

Thanks for those links, Arctic!

I woke up early before a hike and decided I had ample time to fishtail braid! So hiking in an ammonite bun it was.

I'd probably need to pin each spiral before starting on the next to keep it flat.

Ammonite bun ? YAAAY !! You finally chose that name ??!!! :thud:

I used to be really bad and slow at fishtail braids, which is why i never really do them... until about like 3 years ago I started getting into dutch braiding and fivestrand braids.... now I cranked out a fish tail pretty darn fast and cleanly! Thank you hairstyle of the month, helping me realize that practice really does improve braiding performance!

I didn't really get the fishtail too look all that good in a bun, but that might be due to my taper and not enough length.

Time to up my braiding competency. BRING IT.

August 14th, 2016, 09:22 AM
My hair's length to thickness ratio is too small :c Someday though!

Ok - I've given it a go! Please excuse all the wispies - a combination of my hair just being like that and not being a very good fishtail braider! I try to control them, but they are having none of it in the current humidity.

It's very fine so it tends to vanish into nothing in a bun (Ninja bun!)

I think it works? Felt fancy! :)

I had never seen this awesome bun until I saw this thread. Hopefully this becomes my new go to bun when my hair gets longer!

Ponytail holder base lets me make it bigger and still stable.

*squee* The ammonite sticks!

August 15th, 2016, 11:59 PM
Here's mine. I personally do not care for it but since I rarely fishtail braid that's okay :p

August 16th, 2016, 06:24 AM
Here's my contribution! It was fun and easy enough to do even though it came out looking a bit messy around the top of my head.

August 16th, 2016, 03:01 PM
This is such a cool-looking and easy bun! I hadn't actually done a fishtail braid on myself in ages, and was surprised that it turned out the neatest I've ever managed. (Should've remembered to take a pic of that as well!)

Anyway here's my ammonite bun. I really like how my pink ends look in it, and it holds like a rock. I'm definitely doing this again, even though fishtail braiding is slow. :D

(apologies, this pic ended up huge!)

August 16th, 2016, 03:03 PM
kurainenkettu, that looks so great with your hair colour and length! Wow!

August 17th, 2016, 05:30 AM
Oh wow! All your buns look amazing with the thicker and fuller hair - I have hair envy!

And what lovely sticks!

I wish my buns could be less tiny, but it is not to be!

Peggy E, you should definitely give it a shot! You're stats say you are a ii, which is the same as me :) You can do it! :cheer:

August 19th, 2016, 04:53 AM
Sadly, I cannot cinnabun to save my life. I tried, with many, many pins, but it fell apart in a couple of minutes. :( So I bunned it like an LWB instead... definitely doesn't have the ammonite shape, though!

August 20th, 2016, 08:12 AM
Wow, I love how your hair looks! Cheers for the beautiful hairstyle!
