Manic panic or other not so permanent hair colors

So I was kinda wanting to go back to black hair for awhile, but I didn't want anything permanent. Would using the black work well over my chestnut brown hair?

I have read a couple of things online saying that manic panic ended up being a little
more permanent than some have wanted.

I never thought of that. Are they less damaging as well, because of course I was thinking about the damage factor and how the veggie dyes don't ruin your hair unless it was bleached first.

There's some true semis at Sally's that are nice and would wash out with a little more certainty than MP.

They are developer and ammonia free, so I imaging that they are pretty non damaging.
