Hi guys
I am a clothes stylist and for my shoots I usually have a hair stylist on set. Due to lack of funds I will on my next series of shoots not have the hair stylist. I am usually to pre occupied with the styling of clothes that doing the hair as well was daunting! Fortunately for me I have an intern who will be helping me with clothes side of things. So that gives me some time now to work on the hair to style for shoots. So i need some help! Most of my models have long straight hair. I have some with wavy hair but the models I will be working with have mostly straight hair. I would prefer not to buy electric plug in curlers and buy hair curling rollers instead. As they seem to be more accurate in making curls and wont use as much electricity on set. I have done some research on the different types and to my surprise there are quite alot! From Peco rollers - sometimes known as 'spoolies' to 'button' rollers. ribbon rollers, hot rollers and steam rollers to flexi rods, foam and velcro rollers. I quite like the look of the T3 Voluminous hot rollers and the Hot tools pro ionic hairsetter with 20 flocked rollers.... any one got any reviews or any others on heated rollers? thanks!

You will need at least a blow dryer, unless you want to meet that model the day before to put the curlers in. So you'll still have to use an electric tool. I'd go for the curling irons instead if I were you. Hot rollers also consume electricity as well as steam rollers, so I don't get that remark of not having to use electricity. :?:

No experience personally with this. I have heard on here of people using Caruso brand rollers. On this site you are more
likely to see people using heatless methods which take more time and may result in more inconsistent curls than what you will want.

Back in my heat styling, big hair days, I really liked these hot rollers from conair (http://www.ulta.com/more-big-curls-hairsetter?productId=prod6501485). But, you do have to plug them in. These came with a thin metal clip and it's the only kind of roller, heated or unheated, that didn't leave a mark in my hair, apart from velcro rollers.
If you really don't want to use electricity, you could probably mist the hair with water and then use velcro rollers, but that will give you more of a wave and flip than curls, at least in my experience.

And you'll need a few hours until it's dry - which may not be the best thing. :)

Well i thought at least I could charge them them at home as they seem to come in a power point stand . hair dryer is not so bad. I just like the idea of using rollers and not tongs .

Its not that i dont want to use ANY electricity , just depends where my shoot is .. but anywho thanks alot of the conair tip ... will check them out :-) I may even leave some velcro ones in for my shoot as I will be shooting at a salon for a 50's look soon so would be good and also at a laundrette , quite like the idea of women smoking with their rollers still in for the shoot

You have a chargeable blow dryer? That exists?

Hi, no i dont have a chargeable hair dryer, never said I did, I simply said that SOME of the rollers I had seen , you charge before use as some come with power boxes for individual rollers to sit in. So i said i could charge at home. Be great if there was a chargeable hair dryer! maybe there is ! :-)

If you don't want to use electricity I'd consider changing the hair styles you plan to do. Might be easier for you too and save buying equipment.
Eg you've already said about some ladies having rollers in. How about some others having ponytails with a big quiff etc.

Hi folks, thanks for peoples responses. As I have my next shoot coming up real soon, I thought I better get into gear and get some rollers! I love the do it yourself rollers and so I have been fixed about getting these. After lots of research , i have found there are many many rollers, for different style curls. I may choose to buy a selection or a couple of styles of rollers to experiment. i understand there is no way out of using electricity , it was just an initial thought of being able to buy pre chargeable items. seems you cant so its all good. As i mentioned i may be doing a 50's shoot in which case as its in a salon I would love to have the individual rollers to be kept in the models hair for the shoot. I found these cool Hot hair rollers for sale (http://www.canada.for-sale.com/hair-rollers). They promote good conditioning to hair using ionic technology, ceramic. I am happy with my find and thanks again for folks suggestions. Of course it could go wrong or it could go well! I guess with anything its trial and error. I know someone replied to my post with the fact that some leave lines in hair. But the shoots will be long body shots and wont be too close. SO we shall see what happens! I look forward to getting them ! I usually have a day on set or more. So time isnt SO much of an issue . I dont like to rush. The rollers I have picked are in budget and if they dont work then I know i can at least try some others out or get the curling irons/tongues. I will post some pics of the models hair to show my experiments and curls! cant wait! wish me luck!
