So, I had to get up [I]super early this morning and I knew I wouldn't have time to get my hubs to part my hair for me. Quick back story: I'm of the opinion that messy parts can make any style look less... Stylish? I don't know, I just prefer to have my parts be as neat and tidy as possible. Unfortunately, I'm pretty bad with making anything straight, whether it be using scissors or parting my hair. So, it's become something that hubs does for me. With his OCD, he can make any part look pristine! Mind you, sometimes it takes him more than 20 minutes to get it to his satisfaction (I'm not as picky but as he's willing to do it, I just sit patiently). Since I was getting up so early and he didn't have to, I had him part my hair last night. I had decided on 2 Dutch braids for today, which required a center part. To keep it separated (Who remembers that song?!), I slept with my hair in 2 funny buns. I thought I would share the pics and ask everyone to do the same.

Mine is a pile on top of my head with a scrunchie...maybe I will take a photo, but I'm sleeping in a paranda tonight so it might be a bit.

I think we *all* want to see the unicorn bun...

I also want to see this magical sounding unicorn bun, Wildcat Diva!

I just braid mine, as I find buns a bit uncomfortable to sleep in. Here's tonight's very boring, standard, loose braid!

Hey Wildcat Diva, where is this unicorn bun you speak of? I just plait mine but I don't tie off the ends, then put it in a sleep cap. Nothing to see here, believe me!!

Well you guys talked it up already. I hope you are not disappointed. It goes right where a unicorn horn would be (if I was a unicorn).

Please excuse the flushed cheeks. I blame the bulldogs who live in Colorado.

Thank you, school of fish. It's very kind of you to say.

I might add that action still happens despite the "elegance" of the bun. I must have other attributes or my spouse is just desperate.

When I'm lazy I just sleep in one or two regular braids but this is how I prefer to sleep with it.

A braid on top of my head in a paranda. I could never get a bun to hold over night and the paranda keeps my hair better in place than an elastic.

^ lapushka my thought exactly when I saw the photo. Those hair growing from the front hairline are very taut, and seem to support all the weight of the buns, which puts lot of pressure to those delicate follicles.

Here is my (lovely) style. Lol.

1.) I secure my hair in a low ponytail. I like to do a low one because I feel it acts like a "hook" in keeping the cap on my head, and covering my nape area. Otherwise, the cap will creep up the back of my head, exposing more hair.

2.) I loosely twist my hair up into a cinnamon bun, and put the cap on, letting the bun down in the excess fabric.

3.) To keep this hair from moving around, I tie up the hair in the excess fabric of the cap. It keeps my hair secure, and keeps the cap on my head.

I love this method. The only problems I have is the elastic band of the cap I think is rough on my hair. I plan on getting a better quality cap some day. Also, inevitably, some hairs poke out, so I plan on getting a silk pillowcase too. So, it's not perfect, but it's been a crucial step in protecting my hair.

Everyone who is wearing a ponytail or tight styles, should take into account that you move throughout the night and that creates a *lot* of friction and can cause breakage at the ponytail line. This is not like wearing a regular ponytail during the day. The rubbing and tossing and turning takes a lot of toll on styles like that. Please keep that into account. I used to wear a ponytail at night in my late teens, and got sorry because it created breakage at the band.

If you do have to wear a band, put it lower and not directly at your scalp. It's better that way.

I wear a single loose braid and flip it up onto my pillow. I tie the braid with a silk scrunchie on the end.

Mine is a loose nautilus bun high up on top of my head, held with a short stick. It doesn't get in the way as I turn from side, and I can count on one hand the number of times the stick has slipped out during the night. All my sticks are really narrow - chopstick-like-thickness - so I don't even feel it even if it does escape :)

The bun does loosen substantially throughout the night (my hair is super slippery) but it loosens without catching or pulling anywhere. Still, even on nights where I lose the stick the hair remains contained enough not to tangle - I move around in my sleep but I'm not a thrasher :D

Come to think of it, my sleep bun is just a looser version of my daytime bun - the few occasions that I do bun my hair, that is... ;)

I wear mine loose. You can see my mug in my blog with my loose hair. :face:

Years ago when I was growing out the first time I tried all kinds of buns and braids. I think the culmination of these protective style was a bun on top of my head with soft scrunchie (now would sub with spin pins) and covered with a scarf. However after I had been doing these night time protective styles for a while I noticed I had more mechanical damage at the underlayers of my hair and I also did not like how obsessive I had become with my want to protect my hair. So now I just wear it loose.

Oddly, the tossing and turning, while I'm sure is still bad for my hair, didn't cause too much harm most of my life. Before dying, I even used to just sleep with my hair down and loose without much trouble. It wasn't until I started sleeping with one of these babies...

...that I found my hair being SUPER dry in the morning. Lol. I sleep with it pulled up to my ears, so I'd wake up with a bird's nest around my neck and ears. I can't NOT sleep without the cuddly blankets pulled up around my face. Or, rather I just haven't felt like investing time into changing the habit. Comfort wins against hair in this case.

As for the hair ties, I mean, I keep them as loose as I can. I have scrunchies on hand too. I don't see them causing much damage for me personally. I don't have any splits or fly aways, or any other signs of damage in that area. The movement of my hair amongst fabric is where I really noticed the problem. Luckily when I roll from side to side, I rarely roll on my back. It's mostly just the sides of my head that get the most friction, and are also the hardest part for me to grow out.

I said earlier that I sleep in a loose braid, but I do sometimes sleep in other styles too. Crown braids are great for sleeping! Also my favourite travel styles for long car/plane journeys, as they're comfortable, light, secure, and I can sleep in them. :)

I'm boring: either a single braid with a scrunchie or twin braids tied with old pantyhose. I don't think sleeping takes away as much length as all the S&D I still have to do. I guess there's still old damage at the ends.

I'll do a whole assortment of things! Lately I either bun or have hanging braids. If I do a bun, I either bun it similarly to Llama's style, or I do Wildcat Diva's "unicorn bun" style :D. I have a lot of shorter hairs near my face, so I will often do a rope braid that pulls all of that in, I think it's called a lace rope braid? or a french rope braid? I'm unsure what the naming convention would be, but I do that toward one side along the hairline. I then sometimes transition from rope to three strand braid or fishtail braid at my nape, because that holds better than a rope does. Sometimes I get "fancy" and part my hair in the middle to do the rope-to-braid thing on each side of my head. Oh, and I don't tie the ends off with anything. It usually stays somewhat contained.

Me its just a tied back loosely with a scrunchie then a hair net on top of that..so when net is removed the hair is not tangled as its been held still by the scrunchie! i used to sleep with it loose but since my dog walked on it while i slept then its no longer an option..it really hurt!

I either sleep with it loose, or just smooshed up under a satin cap. I have a really hard time sleeping with my hair up, so just getting used to the cap has been a struggle. I will braid it if I oil it overnight, and just not tie off the braid.

I sleep with mine loose.
Three main reasons, the first being that I get migraines if I wear my hair up for any length of time. So it is almost always loose, day or night.
The second being that my worst damage is in the nape area, so exposing those hairs actually makes them more tangly, leading to more damage.
The third is sheer laziness lol, i tend to stay up far too late and then just fall into bed. I don't have a bedtime routine at all

I sleep with mine loose too, ever since I got that breakage (teens yay), I no longer tightly do anything with it at night (esp. not with elastics). I sometimes kept my ponytail from the day in, with lots of criticism by my mom, which I later responded to by keeping it loose at night when I saw the breakage!

Same here. I totally gave up buns, braids and sleep caps for sleeping. Lately I have been testing a cheap silky cap and I've been shedding more than usual. I never believed that hair could get "mould" from humidy, heat, hats or caps making hair fall out but now Im not sure. My hair gets super shiny in the next day when sleeping with my hair loose! Buns make my hair frizzy, I have created a thread about that and I got many suggestions as the ones I tried:i.e. silky caps and braids because they are pretty common in LHC but braids are uncomfy to sleep and silky caps make my hair limp and with some extra shedding...
Weird. So I've decided to keep sleeping with my hair loose as before. Good to know a fine haired person could reach classic with hair loose! :D

Sometimes loose, sometimes a sort of puff on top of my head. Sometimes a braid. Whatever feels comfy - I used to always sleep with a topknot but since BSL or so it stopped being comfy.

Used to do a braid from the top of my head, now I just do a plain loose braid secured with a little claw clip. The only downside - if it gets under any body part (mostly shoulder or back) the clawclip hurts. But no break damage of any sort. I do toss it over the pillow, but I guess I don't sleep still :p

I've tried a vertical disc bun the last few nights and really like it. I didn't have a sleeping style before (kept it open or in a ponytail or braided, depending on how I was wearing it that day) and I wasn't sure whether the bun and the hair pin wouldn't bother me, but I didn't notice it at all.

My hair's short as anything at the moment, so I just leave it be, but when it was long I just used to put it in a couple of loose plaits. That's my preference partially because of the pretty waves it leaves in your hair. :)

(just as a side note: call me daft, but I didn't even realise until about last year that plaits and braids were actually the same thing! Goodness I'm slow, haha)
