View Full Version : Ode To the Man Bun

It's my latest obsession and kind of goes along with a beard, sideshave and sometimes a tattoo (among other things) ... but not 100% of the time, haha. *drool*

Well, that's objectifying.

If one of the men on this board posted similar about a woman, there'd be a riot.

However, we have laudable buns on men here, like Silver Swirl TM, and trolleypup's various updos.

Of our men, who else wears buns?
Do you have evidence you are willing to share/link?

beard, sideshave, and maybe a tattoo also goes with "kind of really buff," which is the part that always gets left out of the description

And yes, I wear a bun some of the time, when I am wearing a bun for the same reason any other long hair does. :) Don't have many pictures of it, though. I wear it, but you can't see it in the pictures because it is on the back of my head. And how many pictures do people take of guys? haha

And I have the beard. No sideshave though, seems too annoying to deal with.

The sideshave though ... I have a soft spot for those ...

We usually watch our shows and bun and braid hair for the event at home.

Right now we are on a Game of Thrones kick.
Tomorrow we will each wear hair axes for the GoT episode "Battle of the Bastards."

Thanks Ed! Thanks Henne! He won't wear it out the house though yet except he did to go to a food drive through. He just said he is getting so hot here but he needs to figure out what to do with his hair... He did wear a hawser braid out the house and got compliments on it.

I don't really worry about it myself. And I don't think he cares.

I just asked him. He says "the hair or the beard?" I shrug, "either." He says "I don't give a ...."

As long as it's low key, I'm ok with it.

If it gets seriously sexual I wouldn't like it, but that's not we are saying here.

Finding something attractive is not inherently objectifying.

And it's a BUN. Not a "manbun." It is no different from any other bun, it does not need a special name just because a man is wearing it. As a feminist, I object to the idea that men cannot do things typically associated with women without giving them some "manly" name just to distance themselves from anything remotely feminine.

Touche! Also lolling at the idea of a burly manly man with long hair one day trying out a bun and being super impressed with the comfort and ease of the style then going out into public, being super self conscious, and declaring loudly it's not like the bun ladies wear because it's a MAN bun :wig:

I definitely wear buns from time to time both for practicality and a change of style. Here's an old picture I previously posted, maybe I'll get around to snapping a new one since it has improved a lot with practice and length.

Hmm Im ok with the girl comments somehow. What's wrong with being a girl anyways? I'm not a feminist boy supporter either, but feminine concept still carry a sort of negative connotation among "men" (guy embracing their femininity, we all have it). In spiritual terms it's great to have both concepts and such. I dislike the mainstream concept of what a girls must be or look anyways...... Basically people are twisted and I dont find my tastes girly like nor do I care.

Thanks Ed

Well I dont really like updos on me at all. But high buns are great because they dont make feel strict, like balding or short hair impression going on. Its a lot easier for me to do because I can actually see and adjust how big, messy or tigh I want it as opposed to low-mid styles. Yep sometimes I feel I look like a Teletubbie, but Im ok with it! :p

... and with your texture and your current lenght you should be able to do one and a lot easier. (My hair is the king of slipperiness) :pumpkin:

I like the high bun too. But I have to ask.... Doesn't it hurt, though, eventually? I can't do one up high without feeling like I'm ripping the hair right from my scalp. Same with high ponytails. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Too tight perhaps...

It's just two bands. Ponytail, split in two, bun one side, then the other trapping the first end underneath, then use a second band to hook the second end underneath. There might have been a visible angle somewhere, but it was probably on top where almost no one can see it because I am 6'3"

Besides I just feel like a human, not prototype!

I see males (of any age) embracing buns, even the tiny half ups, as a victory for any lengthening of hair. This includes pony nubs. I draw the line at clip on bunlets, however.

I have a couple variants of half up that use rather smallish buns.
I'm always wondering if I want a larger bun as the "half" up (partial up?) and thinner length remaining down or in a braid, of smaller bun, thicker remaining hair.
I usually give up and stack two at some point, anyway.

The is my very regular bun for most of the time my hair is up.

Grab the hair like a ponytail, poke the stick through against the scalp, figure 8 the ponytail under the ends of the stick a few times, then finish with a couple turns under the figure 8s. Holds by gravity, lasts hours to a day depending on activity. Drops all the way out when the stick is pulled. Old, old video, but it shows how it works.

Just tried this. AWESOME. My hairs not long enough to look neat, in fact, t's quite the mess. Also not sure how long it'll stay in, and I also used a wooden chopstick (that's all i have.. <hangs head in shame>.
But even with that, it amazing in that it doesn't feel tight, or hurt my scalp.

Can't wait til my hair's longer so I can wear it out.

Thank you so much for posting this.. Absolutely love it!!
