Is it just me or does everyone else get "how to grow you hair fast" videos in their suggestions on YouTube and watch them out of curiosity?

I find it humorous how many of these people are saying "oh don't use heat on your hair or it will stop growing!"... yeah, because that's totally how that works! And then they proceed to show a flat iron and curling iron, and this straightener brush, and this...WHAT

Or "I only use high-end products, I don't use low-end things like *snotty voice* Pantene, it just coats your hair!" ... yeah. That's what silicones do!! and high-end, or low end silicones will do that!

And lastly, "I take biotin and it made my hair grow four inches in one month!", if that's the case... you should really see a doctor, as that's simply not possible without an underlying problem. Ugh!

I can't help but laugh at these videos now that I've been on LHC so often... Hair is so individual that these "facts" (or myths as we call them here) are just...no. Please tell me I'm not the only who who audibly rolls their eyes at all of this.

Especially the claims on growth rate are getting more and more ridiculous, fueled by people who leave crap comments that "it actually worked" for them... Lmao bye!!
I simply click the not interested button if stuff like that shows up in hope to get these youtubers out my suggestions and get more of those that are actually interesting and innovative.
I guess we have a few LHC favorites that everyone likes, for example Torrin Paige who shows alot of buns and updos, BeautyKLove testing diy products and curling methods or those who educating people on ethnic hairtypes that are different from the advertisement "ideal".
I personally love to watch good coloring and heat styling tutorials although i don't need any of them ( i do use heat but there's inly so many new things i can do with a flatiron).

I watch the one about red oil lol, she says if you use my oil you'll have thick hair like me lmao and poor girls fall for it all the time.

For me, as a hairstylist, it all sounds even crazier. But what really makes my skin crawl is actually when there's footage of them violently brushing their wet hair with the worst kind of brush there is! It makes me shiver! :run:

It bothers me when I see those "professional" hair styling videos where they make a bun that could easily be secured with just a hair stick or two, but then they keep it up by using a hundred bobby pins

And don't forget the teasing and hairspray!

I saw a youtube tutorial by tresemme (I think that was it) for a french twist and that guy teased part of her hair with a comb so much that it looked completely matted. I actually gasped when I saw that. Who would do that to their hair? I can't imagine the nightmare it is to try and get those tangles out.

The model had really gorgeous red hair too, and by the look of her freckles and complexion it was probably natural. I can't imagine scrunching my hair to that degree. I still cringe when twisting my hair for cinnamon buns.

What surprises me is that some people's hair can really take that kind of abuse without causing too much damage.

It is amazing how much abuse some people's hair can take. I see girls here who straighten, dye, and wear their hair down on motorbikes. And they use narrow toothed combs. And they still have hair!

I've seen them. I don't call them gurus. Anyway I look at it as entertainment. I'm more interested in seeing the hairstyles. I'll ignore all the pills or food supplements claims. I'll also never be taken in with the "get my special oil mix/products", for super growth thing.

The first time I saw one I was a bit shocked at the amount of products used in what looked like a haphazard way. These products may not have been made to be compatible with so many different ones in that way. After that I saw these videos as being hilarious. I tend to look for more of the curly haired ones especially the tighter curls. It is a bit annoying to have to see so much attention paid to using stylers and gels trying to slick back the front edges in 99% of videos. I've seen some do a perfectly good hairstyle then pull out the front wisps of hair, gel and manipulate it into a pattern. Then there's the wash and gos, which are supposed to let the curls be and they still insisted on slicked edges on that style. Then later some of them will be moaning about the edges of their hair coming out and what miracle product their using to fix it.

Right!? It makes me shudder seeing how people do that with their hair! :shudder: I wish that my hair could tolerate that much abuse! And here I leave it out for a short time, and it seems to be a magnet for damage, and finds ways to get itself torn and tangled, even when I try my utmost to be careful, which if I left it out every day and under rough treatment, I'm sure it would be ratty, matted, and pitiful in no time. :rollin:

lulikrueger, yeah I see that on polish blogs in 'best brushes' articles too, they recommend these metal brushes. My hair dreads from just looking at them.

Yeah, teasing and securing with bobby pins is stupid. On the plus side, my hair looked like teased most of my life so it's kinda fun to see people trying to get my hair! I have anime character with teased hair in my av, heh.

Decoy, frekles don't mean anything, pale people with brown hair can have brownish freckles and when they dye/henna people think they're natural redheads, lol. I got some freckles in the past but thankfully got rid of them. Natural brown/blondette.

HairKay, I love sleek styles, actually. I was excited when I saw curly with tight curls doing sleek, low bun. Now I know I can do this while curly too. So I like sleek and combed back. But I try to change part and make loose buns. And I have loose hair around the house. Edges fine so far. I agree that natural hair channels overdo their hair, though... Too much product, complicated techniques, just too much fuss! I hate wash and go vids, they're not easy at all.

Guys, I always used fine toothed comb, it's best for my stubborn tangles. Tried finger detangling and it was just wrong. Now I'm afraid of even wide combs, huh. I used to wear my hair loose/ponytailed all the time and they grown to classic just fine but they were staticky and with splits on each hair. Maybe it's styling? With oiling or silicones they would look fine? Like hair makeup?

I do understand getting hair sleek for putting it in buns or a ponytail but not for a wash and go. You're right the term "wash and go" is a misnomer, my idea of a wash and go is exactly that, no putting layers of products, shingling, squishing, lifting roots, and blow drying with a diffuser.

I also find that some that say wearing hair up to keep retaining length is myth to be wrong. The ones I've seen have hair that is slightly above shoulder length unstretched so they haven't got to the stage of dealing with hair rubbing on shoulders and back. I think they should have left that opinion until they're dealing with it.

If I don't put them up I have splits, but I gain length. With ridiculous splits and even finer hair due to these splits. I assume that on even more fragile hair ends would break off... Overall I don't understand why people are against putting their hair up... It's amazing, hair don't get caught under purse strap and don't get into my eyes. It's even better than short hair since it doesn't get into my eyes. And bye bye ugly splitty fine hair.

I couldn't retain length until I started to wear my hair up. It was fine getting to BSL without doing so after that the hair would break off and there were a lot of split ends.

Yes, I'm all for putting the hair up as well. I started to wear it up around between shoulder & APL, I think... if I remember correctly. Because it got everywhere and that is something I just can't stand! Which is why I much rather have it long so I can *decently* put it up in a nice style, rather than have it short, flailing about and it being hard to put up.

This is exactly it, for me! Long enough and it actually stays out of my way and off my face because I just bun it or braid it. I don't have to worry about bad hair days because I slept on it wrong either. And it doesn't end up looking goofy if I let it airdry instead of blowdrying it (I particularly hate blowdrying).

I used to abuse mine with straighteners quite a bit... and when my hair got to it's "damaged terminal length", it looked like it had been to hell and back. I highly suspect that these girls who have long hair and do all of this abuse and whine about cones, are the ones drenching their hair in serum, not aware that most have cones... just so their hair doesn't look like a trainwreck. :shudder:

Yes, I think it's crazy. They say their hair grew 4 inches in a week by doing the inversion method. I don't want to say they're lying but maybe they are just seeing what they want to see.

I wouldn't mind putting my hair up more, I prefer buns. However, it's very hard to do because my hair is thin/fine and the bun is not as full as I would like. In the past I've used an elastic headband to make the bun look fuller but then I have to use bobby pins to secure the ends into a bun shape. I soon realized the bobby pins are not so good for my kinky hair as they get stuck and pull on the hair as I'm taking them out. So I don't know. I'm thinking about trying a sock bun.

That's the main reason I hate bobby pins- it's difficult to get them out without ripping out hairs. Of course there's also the poking-my-scalp thing.

I finally got to try spin pins and they are great, perhaps you can give it a try. You can get them at any retail stores like Target and Walmart for example the brand I know that has them is Goody but they cost 3 to 4 dollars for only 2. Last week at a craft store I found spin pins on clearance 1 dollar for a package of three, regual price 1.99, still cheap and they work great with my curly hair and they are sooo easy to use.

Not long before joining LHC I watched the popular videos that came up when searching for "How to grow long hair". I'm not gullible enough to believe 4 inches in a month or whatnot, yet still uninformed me thought nothing of brushing wet hair with common brushes, or of overhyped, expensive product recommendations without much of an explanation.
Ugh those expensive products I've bought that had noting to offer for my hair!!!

I guess it's a little too easy for an average person to reach misinformation if they're not ready to research more extensively.

I know, right?? "Take this magic pill and your hair will grow (insert ridiculous amount of inches) in a month!"

There's no magic pill for hair, for weight loss, or anything. Everything takes patience and perseverance... but in this instant gratification world, we expect that popping a pill will do the work for us.

I'll admit, I do take biotin. But not for my hair to grow, I take it for my nails to be stronger!

This is exactly what I was thinking of! I saw a girl on YT doind a Hairfinity "review" and she claimed over 4 inches of growth in only a month of taking their over-priced Biotin. She went on and on about their "special formula of vitamins and minerals" for over 10 minutes. I bet she hadn't even read the ingredient list. I decided to watch more vids on Hairfinity and most seemed as ridiculous as the first.

The only hair "gurus" I subscribe to on YT are TorrinPaige and LaDollyVita but I enjoy those other, nonsensical vids for entertainment purposes.

It's simply uninformed to a point where it becomes hilarious. Girls comparing growth like they lied in elementary school about how many gazillion of riches their daddy is wealthier than anybody else.
It cannot work, like you can't rellace an entire night or a few nights of sleep simply by drinking coffee. Same illogical concept.
If there's a deficiency due to lack of nutrients or absorbtion of these, getting back to normal and healthy is once thing. But shooting past that times ten just an impossibly stupid claim aka clickbait. Or maybe some are just not very educated on what an inch looks like in the first place.

Definitely some of this. Plus, it's not hard to be really inconsistent in measuring if it gives you the result you want. I think there's some seeing-what-you-want-to-see going on.

Some of them do, a lot of them don't. It's illegal here too, but they do it anyway.
For me, by the time I hit APL, riding a motorbike with my hair down (wearing a helmet) generated awful tangles, especially if I took it on the highway. And I actually figure that overall, wearing a helmet probably helps to prevent some of the tangles. I hate to even think about it with my hair past waist now. Braids are such an enormous help.

And I actually figure that overall, wearing a helmet probably helps to prevent some of the tangles. I hate to even think about it with my hair past waist now. Braids are such an enormous help.

It's so dangerous...
I've seen some driving without a helmet in Spain...
My son wears a helmet on his bike like all children under 10 or so do here... Can't even imagine him driving a motorbike without a helmet.

My hair gurus are "LisaFreemontStreet" and "PinupDollAshleyMarie"
They make wonderful 50s looks, damaging their hair to the max, but I love the styles and the fact that they still have hair amazes me.
I'd never do this to my hair again, now that it's so long, but 3 years ago I used to curl my bangs under with a flat iron and put tons of hairspray on it and give me victory rolls... I love how the styles look even though I know how damaging it is.

Thank you so much. I'm so happy you like the recs. I might have missed a few here and there, but these are channels that posted recently (in the last number of months). I like to keep a variety of 2a-4c in there, and beautyklove is even straight haired. I have learned a lot even from women who weren't my texture but had nice routines going. So do look beyond your texture, everyone!

It's often the search terms that do it. I only sub to those women (and there's a man in there too) who have nice and well-informed advice on hair.

I don't really get the whole texture thing... When I CO I'm curly, from 3a to 3b/c. But when I oil heavily, shampoo it out and don't use condish I have hair like beautyklove! And when my hair are in a bob and shampoo only, without oiling, they're naturally straight. Then they start to flip when in long bob and when they're longer they poof out without any definition if I shampoo only, but curl when I CO. It's crazy! So I kind of ended watching for info for all textures.

My hair does odd things too, though I'll never be a curly, whatever I do. ;) :p It's fine, I don't have issues with it. It's nice to be a chameleon and change your texture out that much just by manipulating it differently! :)

For me, they are better, because spin pins aren't tight like bobby pins are. So they don't pinch hair. You just need a little patience sometimes to unscrew them.

Oh God, this drives me insane. Especially the hype on vitamins.. Though I see that a lot on LHC too. Everyone just wants a quick and easy way, but unless you're vitamin deficient, you won't be seeing an improvement.

But yeah, I can't do these "healthy hair" videos. Nope. I feel like most of these women have no idea what they're talking about and simply repeat what they've heard another YouTuber say, without doing the slightest amount of research. All they would have to do is peek through a cosmetology book to know what their "facts" are actually myths.

Add to that the amount of them that say you must trim every X amount of time so your hair will grow (6-8 weeks is a popular one). They give no reason for each of the trims. Now if they were talking about managing a lot of split ends or growing out damage or layers or coloured hair I'd understand. They just say this amount of trimming is necessary. A few might later explain why but many don't.

Waves are the best for summer, I see them everywhere... Pinterest, fashion collections. I have to admit I have weird feelings about my curliest texture. Big curls yeah, but tinies were bit of a shock. I think I look kinda weird in them. But Summer Kelsey from youtube looks great with them, so maybe I just need to learn to work with them.

Haha, HairKay, I hate these you must trim vids too. I always grow by stopping trimming completely, so yeah, huh.

Me too on the 'you must trim to grow'. I don't think I ever got past BSL or so before. I finally stopped trimming a couple of years ago, and what do you know, I'm past waist already and people tell me my hair grows so fast..... (1/2 inch/month).

I know what you mean, Wusel. I like to look at crazy colors dying and these japanese vids with back combed pigtails! And 'eyes like a doll' vids and gyaru vids (they flatiron) even though I use only natural stuff (henna, etc) and don't wear makeup. Ooh, and I love black eyeshadow, but it's so drying on already dry skin so I gave up.

Thank you, lapushka! If only they wouldn't dread while they curl... Some sections create tiny dready balls instead of curls, lol.

I tried no trimming thing on nails too, with mixed results. Some nails broke off but some grow and grow...

Just watched this...Half an inch, seriously? That's like the monthly hair growth average for most people. I am totally not buying this.

I never even knew this inversion method was a THING. I always oil my hair with my head inverted (Not because it "will make my hair grow", but because it will help me distribute the oil evenly. My longest layers tend to get very dry somehow, and I find I can oil them more efficiently with my head inverted like that.)

In response to the OP, coming from a health science background its my pet peeve when youtube guru's spout off pseudo-scientific ideas as facts. Especially when it's to promote or sell specific products or vitamins! I feel bad for the more loyal viewers who believe them and shell out money for the product du jour. But similarly I love watching youtube while doing my makeup and hair of a morning, so I end up watching a lot of hair related videos but as soon as they start talking about how hair 'knows to grow' when you cut it, or how you need a special herb or vitamin I skip right on haha :p

I looked at my recommendations today and there was one on how to get your baby's hair to grow. They had a picture of a young baby with hair about 3mm long then two months later when it's over an inch long, the usual average growth rate. For goodness sake no one needs to know how to grow hair. It grows anyway. There are some medical conditions that affect hair grow but in general most hair will grow. Now if this was about a child just past toddler stage with fine hair that keeps breaking off then it'd be something to address length retention.

One of my favourite videos I saw of hair 'advice' was another one of those clickbait "How to grow your hair overnight" videos and she honestly measured her hair dry one time, Then measured it wet . Proceeded to say how it worked because it grew maybe an inch. Not at all because it got weighed down by water

I think my only problem I have ever had was the girls always already have had long hair, and no actual documentation. Often these girls have had long hair, all their lives and kept it long young and then make a video about growing hair when they spent most of the growing.. growing. You know what I mean? I like seeing, progress. Thats why I joined the forums. YT guru videos are too much "instant gratification" for me to handle.

I must admit I watch most 'hair guru' videos for literally 'entertainment' purposes. I find them extremely humerous when I get told that the right hairspray can work wonders and that your hair will only grow if you invest good money in it and here's my favourite plastic vented brush which is broken but I love it. The only youtuber which I can relate to and learn from is STEPH ARIZONA. She is AMAZING. I swear she must be a member of LHC, watch just one of her hair videos especially the routine for her hair care and you'll see why, I highly recommend all her hair content.

I feel the same way. One of my favorite things about TLHC is watching people's progress be it growing out natural, gaining length, getting rid of bangs and layers, and so on. It's very satisfying to see someone reach a goal over time. Time is what makes things worth while--if everything we wanted came to us overnight, nothing would *mean* as much in my opinion.
I usually don't use youtube for hair videos unless it's something funny.

I understood after a lot of patience that each individuals hair is different. Cant help it. The least we can do is take good care of it

You haven't seen the latest spate of overnight growth videos. It's a hair mask using egg, grapeseed oil then when it's washed out coconut oil is applied and left in the hair overnight. They've been going on about a visible gained inch overnight. It seems to me this is all to do with hair's elasticity not hair growth. I know about them because sometimes they come up on recommendations. It does surprise me who actual decided to try it out because some I'd thought wouldn't fall for that.

Sort of tenuous link to this subject - I watched a program in the UK the other day called, ‘Be Your Own Doctor’.
They looked at all the crazy methods people are recommending on Youtube to help your health.

Including Coconut Oil mouth rinse to get rid of plaque – this does not work and created more plaque in the mouth.
They also tested out the already known process of chewing gum after a meal – this was proven to significantly reduce plaque.

And anecdotal evidence of mums on youtube stating that they turned their placenta into pills for only $200 and the pills were full of nutrients that helped them recover much faster
Whilst the placenta may have a lot of good stuff in it, the incineration process required to turn it into powdered pill form killed anything that was good in it except a very, small amount of iron (much smaller than the daily recommended amount).
It may have had a placebo effect, but you’d be better off paying less for some multivitamins / iron tablets to get the same placebo effect plus the actual possible benefit of absorbing nutrients. Better still just eat food with vitamins / iron in.

The point was people stick a lot of crap on youtube and I’m glad that this program was dispelling some of the myths.
I wonder if they will address things like biotin and pre natal vitamins for hair growth in another program – I think if there was a magical way to get instant super fast hair growth of 4 inches a month or whatever – everyone would be doing it and all hair salons would be selling it and then recommending hair cuts every 2 weeks – the fact is your hair just grows at the rate it grows. Looking after it and being generally healthy may help improve the health of your hair/hair follicles might mean a miniscule improvement – but I don’t believe there is some magical quick fix .
