I am a little under 4 months out now and I haven't made a final decision on my hair. In fact, I haven't even decided up or down! I was kind of toying with the idea of something very Rita Hayworth 1940s-y, but I would love some real people inspiration and ideas!

Thank you! If I had known how to put my hair in a bun then (I didn't learn until recently) I might have done that instead, since it was very windy, but I definitely didn't want to go through the expense and hassle of having a salon do my hair and this suited my needs.

I won't even bug you with pics of mine....it was almost 9 years ago and my hair was shoulder length. I did my own hair and I just did a half up with side swept bangs and a white lily silk flower. Not much different that what I wore daily....lol.

I spun mine up into a very quick side bun and held with mini claw clips. Glamorous! But the hair gods smiled on me and it looked GREAT and it was very easy to take down and headbang with later in the evening :rockerdud

Nothing special. It was only about shoulder to collarbone length at the time. My SIL-to-be rolled it on big hot rollers for me so it had a nice smooth curve to it.

Back in 1973 no one did much of anything special, unless you were a curly top.

So I washed my hip length hair the night before, and put it up in 3 soup cans overnight;the pebbles look...a ponytail on top of my head and split in 3 .

On the Wedding day it was down with soft wurls, parted in the middle and tucked behind both ears.

I just pulled out the photo album to check!
Given that it was put up by a hairdresser, who opened the salon on a Sunday, to do it, and had to cut my hair and thin it out to be able to get it all up two weeks before for the trial, I'm not actually that impressed looking back at how many ends were actually sticking out!
It was all pinned up with little curls sitting on the top. If my hair was currently that length now ( must have been bsl judging by the loose curls round my face) I could recreate it better myself I think!

Eta: I loved it at the time, and I still think it was really pretty, but you guys have obviously raised my expected standard for up dos!

Being the long hair fan that I am Id definitely say down or half down, Id like seeing the length in such nice pictures, plus, I dont think my face looks its best with it up (round face problems lol).

I washed and damp bunned in two buns (top half, bottom half) the night before, then took it down in the morning and let it finish air drying. Then, I used one of those metal one piece barrettes to pull back a small amount on top so I'd have somewhere to shove the veil. I also used a ton of hairspray so it would stay nice.

At the time, it was tailbone. Now I keep it closer to waist.

Tl/dr, I wore it mostly down and curly.

I also spent like a half hour the next day detangling it.

I always had this dream of a wonderful updo with curls and so on. But I made the mistake and listened to my hairdresser. She told me that this would not go with my dress. Every time I look at the photo I'm very sad. I had just annoying open hair, a bit over shoulder length.
But: We have only one photo from our wedding. We didn't make a photo session. And we will make real photos this or next year - 11 or 12 years after. And that time I'll get the hairstyle I want to have. A half up braided beehive and the rest of my hair open down half of my butt. Cannot wait until this....

I don't have pictures around to upload, but this is the picture I brought to my hair and makeup lady, and she did a fairly good job using it as a template for me.

It was essentially a soft, curly half up with soft curls and tendrils all over the place. The only adornment I had in my hair was a few white bougainvillea flowers tucked into the curve around the gathered part of the half-up, and a simple square veil (with lace edging) pinned into my hair just under the gathered hair. I didn't have all the crown like flowers in it the way this picture does. I also did not have my hair parted in the middle, I don't really have a natural part. It was just gently pulled back with all the shorter face framing pieces curled around my face. I chose this style because it appears to be a fancier/more romantic version of how I did my hair almost every day back then: a half-up peacock twist or loose bun with a beak clip.
My hair was MBL then, below BSL when fully curly, but not by a huge amount. My hair is naturally curly and I remember insisting passionately that she use no heat tools on me, because my hair ought to do a curly style just fine. The hair lady (who knows curly hair quite well) agreed, but said she would bring her heat tools *just in case* but promised up and down to not touch my hair with them unless *I* wanted it. The day of the wedding, after she did my hair, using only bobby pins and her hands, no brushes or combs or irons (unlike hairdressers who don't understand curls and have insisted on straightening and then curling my hair into whatever curly style i want and never just manipulating my natural hair), she asked me to take a good hard look in the mirror and think if some areas couldn't use just a little sprucing up. I hadn't eaten or slept properly for a week or two before the wedding, and my hair showed it. It was a bit lank and lacking bounce. So I told her honestly and a little grudgingly that I did think it could use a little help. She was extremely careful with my hair, just curling little patches of it here and there where a curl could use a little help, but not touching anything else, and it really did make everything look better to me.

I wanted soft curls with a slight vintage look, and I had a hairflower I had made myself that I was gonna tuck behind my ear. I had a very special dress and I wanted my hair to be more neutral, especially since it was BRIGHT red at the time (chemical box dye red).

And what I ended up with was... A huge curly mess. Honestly, before my man of honour did a miracle job on it with dozens of hairpins to push it down, it was DOUBLE the size of this. I almost looked like a redheaded version of Dolly Parton. It looked like a hairdo from the 80's. And I was 22 getting married in 2010.

And the hairdresser that did my hair was an old friend of my moms who had her own salon, I'd been going to her for years to do my hair and I was always happy with it. We had an appointment a weeks time before the wedding to do a practise run and then it got perfect. But I didn't bring the picture on the day of the wedding and apparantly she'd forgot what we'd agreed, since I ended up with... That... It makes me angry and sad to see the pictures now, I do NOT look like I wanted. My hair steals all the attention.

So moral of the story is: Make 100% sure you and your hairdresser is on the same page!

I did it myself since I couldn't find a hair stylist who was prepared to do anything with hair as long as mine. (Well, except for cutting it off but that wasn't really an option.) During the ceremony I had a veil attached to the top of the bun.

Oh yes, I so agree with making sure your hairdresser is on the same page! Also, if you have a reference picture you like, make sure to have it on you both at the trial and on the day of! I actually forgot my reference shot for a trial with a woman I did not go with. I have no idea if her lack of ability to do what I wanted was due to me forgetting my reference picture or just being completely on a different page to begin with.
(She was so completely on a different page than me. She also did my makeup and had some obsession with playing up the squareness of my face - I looked like a total stranger. She also insisted on me wearing pearl earrings to be borrowed from her and she put them in my ears for me!! I'm a massive germy and was grossed out at a stranger's earrings in my ears. I also thought it rude and intrusive to put them in herself - it hurt! and I am not a fan of pearls. She also insisted that my fiance not see me like that when it was my fiance's opinion of it that I cared about. Just all around a very bad match for me.)
Thankfully, I remembered the picture for the tryout for my second hairdresser who I did end up going with. And she did ask to see the reference picture again the day of, just to make sure she was going to do things right. I had it on my phone, and I had my phone on me, so that ended up not being a problem.

Don't have a picture as we went with film photography and I don't have a scanner. I did a trial with a hairdresser who curled the entire length with a curling iron and pinned the front back. It looked OK, but fell out quickly and ended up looking humdrum after a couple hours. Decided to go with my mom. She had all sorts of hair stuff since her mom ran a beauty salon out of her home. (Would have been great to use grandma's salon to get ready but she'd passed some 5 years before I got married). But my mom inherited some old-fashioned barrel rollers and a portable bonnet hair dryer. After doing some tests, we hit upon a combination of damp hair + gel + dryer time then post-styling hairspray that would allow me to sport curls until the end of the reception.

I ended up using the previously trialed salon to do my makeup; I wrapped my still-in-curlers hair in a scarf and drove with my sister to the salon. (She was going to have them do her hair while I got my makeup done).

Mom carefully unwound each roller, starting with the underlayers and only separating the curl into 2 or 3 clumps. Pieces around my face were pinned back a couple inches; simply bobby-pinned in place but the hair wasn't smushed flat to my scalp (so you could still see pieces of curled hair framing my face). I used this anchored hair to support the tiara and veil.

Mine was nearly knee length and very thick. I damp-wrapped it in a zillion socks the evening before to get waves/curls, and left it loose. The curls didn't last long, but I did keep waves the rest of the day.

I had mine curled at the bottom and then put up in a bun with the tips of the curls hanging out. It was beautiful, however the hairdresser totally killed the style by making the hair on the top of my had puffy. The picture I showed her did not have that and I did not ask for that... By the time I saw it, there was no time to fix it, specially cause I had a whole bottle of hair spray on it. I cried over it and can't even look at the pictures because it is so not what I wanted. Looks great from the front and the back but the sides look so terrible. So please make sure you and the stylist are in absolute agreement about the style before hand and check their work as it is in progress.
