Hey everyone, it's been ages since I've been on here. Just a question regarding dying my hair, I have hair I hennaed to a medium-light auburn, the 3" or so (may be much more than that O.o) of roots are an ashy brown. I'd like to get a dark blue (a bit lighter than navy) with purple color without bleaching or anything. First, I know the hennaed part may turn blue a bit more purple-y, but do y'all think it's possible? Second, which brand/shade of color should I get for good color deposit and staying power but not a lot of bleeding?

I do have a question regarding hair products too, but I'll make a separate thread for that :) Thanks!

You might be able to get purple but I doubt you'll be able to get blue. It'll probably come out muddy brown if you use a blue-based purple. Semi-permanent dyes will darken your hair, possibly significantly. My dyed hair is slightly darker than yours and purple semis make it almost black.

Adore and Pravana are good brands for color deposit and staying power and no rub-off, although all semis bleed when wet.

I have blue lagoon here, la riche directions. Also henna partially. Collect a bunch of shed hair at least before you do anything and test whatever you get on that first. I am going to do that and see what gives :)

A few years ago, I tried for purple over my medium auburn hennaed hair. This is how 3 hours of Adore Purple Rage turned out: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=10638&d=1398714401

There was definitely a purple sheen to it, but it was pretty black to the casual observer. Faded brownish and eventually washed out.

I remember one member, ages ago, while growing out henna used blue to tone down henna (orange), the combination was brown which macthed her natural colour pretty well.

I used Manic Panic Deep Purple Dream on my unbleached hair

I have to wash my hair nearly everyday and find it last 1 1/2 -2 weeks.

For me it went to a reddish purple. Faded to burgundy.

Thanks for the feedback. My semi-educated guess is that it's not really going to show up on my hair unless I do some lightening...and I'm frankly too lazy for that right now. haha. Colored hair extensions might be a better way to go then. :(

ignore the messiness, this was when my dreads were in their baby stage. I put blue splat dye over brown/ginger hair. This was back in 2014.

It might look blue, but definitely not the blue you want. Blue and orange are opposit to each other, it'll look muddy. If your hair is more on the red side, it'll be purple, so, if you do want a fashion colour without bleaching, just go straight for purple to avoid strange results.
I'm a hairstylist and I could guide you better if you had a clear photo of your hair colour.

I would do a test strand. It may look muddy, but it may not. I've done colors over other colors many times and never had any issues. I dye my hair a lot by the way! I would go with Special Effects hair dye. They are the most pigmented and longest lasting for most people. More expensive, but well worth it. But please, please, please, do a strand test to make sure you get a good color and the right color. :)
