View Full Version : June 2016 - Off Coiled Bun

Ok, this style comes with a request to either find or create a video tutorial demonstrating this bun! (There used to be and article, but it didn't survive the site migration.)

The Off Coiled Bun is similar to a cinnamon bun, but instead of wrapping each twisted coil around the last in a spiral, the next coil slightly overlaps the center of the last one. This bun takes many pins!

Here are some examples of Off Coiled Buns I've done. I hope they help illustrate my sparse description!

Before I try/fail at this, how many pins = many?

Is this Fox's tutorial the same? She calls it Tri-Coil Bun.

While I have not tried this bun, I usually use 4 bobby pins (preferably the bigger type) to pin a cinnabun, inserted from the "corners", if the bun would be a square. So I'd assume for 3 coils 12 pins should be more than enough. I'd assume 6-12 for hair that is not heavy, but I might be totally off.

I've accidentally done this, but with nearly BSL hair, I can only get 2-2.5 loops! My struggle, when trying to do this intentionally, is how to hold each loop in place as I keep going... do I pin as I go, or get it arranged and then pin? They each seem to have their pros/cons - I need at least one more hand.

neko_kawaii
June 5th, 2016, 02:41 PM
I do the first two coils and then pin. I start with my long spin pins and get as much of the overlapping coils as I can, adding any stabilizing pins as needed to hold stuff put for the moment, then once I've got it all up I go back and add more pins, adjust any that were temporary. In the last photo the finishing pins are just decoration, they don't add any needed stability.

This is a fun one! It looks a lot more complicated than it is. After two tries I think that it's easier for me to do all the coils first and the pin. It feels more stable if I make a round bun by coiling the line of coils (like doing a braided bun). Let's see if I can take a photo tomorrow, it's too dark now.

I took my first try with a rope braid :) Tomorrow I will do a more serious rendition. I just happened to have a rope braid to work with.

Wow Gossamer, is there 6 coils? Did you count the pins? I see you used the magic fairy pins :D

This is so elegant style, all the photos so far have been beautiful! The ropebraided version reminds me visually of "Arctic's Braid" I posted a tutorial for last year.

This is definitely one style I'd love to make when my hair is longer!

@Arctic: Looks like I got 5 coils, but that last coil is a composite of probably 3-4 coils just to get my super thin ends contained. For a first try, this isn't bad, gleaming magical fairy hairpins and all!
I didn't count, but i think I might have used 4 or 5 those pins plus 2-3 spin pins. Guess I'll have to count them when I take it down later!

OK, I tried this and actually made it stay briefly. With slick hair, I'll need more length and start with a braid which should hold better. Maybe around holiday time? It certainly does look elegant and festive. Really love the rope braid version!

Hooray, Gossamer! I was hoping someone with more coils would attempt this one and share pics. I count four coils in my last attempt and I know I stuffed quite a bit of thin length behind the mass before pinning along the bottom.

Lovely, Kendrix.

Thanks neko & lulikrueger!

So when I took it out last night, I counted 6 spin pins and 4 long pins. I had to add 3 spin pins to it over the course of the day because it sagged some.

I did it again today, much neater and more secure, and used fewer spin pins. Forgot to count while i was putting it up again, though!

Everyone's buns have been inspirational! :applause I can see how off-coiled bun is better name than tri-coil bun :D

I was inspired yesterday by this thread and made 3 cinnabuns off-center and diagonally, imitating this style. It doesn't look quite same because the way I sectioned my hair is visible, but it looked nice never the less. I wonder how long hair needs to be for this style? (I have lower ii hair myself.)

Kendrix, looks great!

Gossamer, that is stunning, the way you arranged the coils! Was is comfortable weight distribution for you? Looks like it would be!

Thank you lapushka, LTC, papayatree, hypersensitive, and Arctic!

Arctic, the way you describe doing three cinnabuns sounds really attractive looking. And you're right, it definitely distributes the weight well.

So... I've searched youtube using "off coiled bun" "off coiled updo" "tri coil bun" and "tri coiled updo" (and variations on coil/coiled) and haven't found any videos. Do I need to make one for this style? :)

I didn't realize you have twins to the earrings you sent me! I've been meaning to ask, but never remember when I'm at a keyboard, did you make them?

I had the volume up loud enough I kept thinking one of my kitties was talking to me. Thank you for talking to yours or I would have been sitting here trying to figure out where my cat was that it sounded so close but was not visible.

Yup, I need to wait a couple of months to get longer hair before I can pull this of. More then four spin pins could also bo a great idea until then. But I will show a picture of my less succesful attempt anyway.

You're most welcome! And yes, I made those earrings. They're not twins to your pair, but close. Pattern for the ones I'm wearing in the video: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sunburst-earrings, made with size 10 crochet cotton

Pattern for the pair I sent you: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/birthday-earrings made with tatting thread. I'm getting a lot better at tiny motifs, I think the green ones in the video are the first pair I ever made!

Flexis saved the day so the focus is off the coils.

Finally a hairstyle of the month I can actually do! They look pathetically small and puny, but I got it right, on the first try! Will post a picture when husband comes home XD

And now I have all this plans for if I can make a messy-looking bun by doing this with a very loose twist. Gotta try that out too.

aaand then i got spunky..because it IS way past midnight here. xD
This is a half up, divided well above my ears and started from either end so they cross as they shrink. It wasn't as drastic of a shrink, but i definately could have made 4-5 rather than 3...i ran out of bobby pins!!! i only had 2 per bun (13) just the corners! xD now if i can sleep reeeeally still, and only on my face i can wear this tomorrow ;)

The braided version with the beads turned out very nice!

I'm going through old hairstyle of the month threads, so forgive the bumping! This was so quick and easy! A tonne of bun styles just slide out of my hair but not this one as I get to pin each coil separately. Genius! It's currently feeling pretty sturdy with only three spin pins, one per coil. I also like how big it looks on my head :)
