View Full Version : Vague Hair Comment

I received a comment from a co-worker today when I was in the bathroom finger combing my hair.

"Did you get a haircut?"
"No..."
"Oh, it looks different today!"

:justy:

Maybe it's the fact that it's been thrown up in a bun 9 times out of 10 since I joined LHC, and today I decided to wear it down. I can't help but wonder if that comment was to imply that my hair looks shorter (please god no shudder:), or if it just has the "freshly-cut healthy" look (what I'd like to think, been taking much better care of it!).

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but that comment bothered me enough to put my hair into a bun.

"You know you're a long hair when..." much?

I would have been like, what do you mean different? Lol
But I doubt it looks shorter!
Although there are some days where I feel like my hair looks shorter... depends on how it is laying that day.

I feel like this speaks to how much other people don't really notice what's going on around them, ya know? Your co-worker probably just has no concept of what your hair actually looks like on a day to day basis but because you were finger-combing it, they looked at it and thought "oh! hair!... hmm....haircut? I bet she got a haircut!" Well that's what I would tell myself anyway. 8)

My intial thought is that you probably have babied your hair recently more than usual and therefore its bouncier and has a slightly different texture than what she saw before so she just assumed you got layers or something. I don't take anything negative out of her comment.

That's what I'm thinking as well. No one at work has seen it down for a whole day (I usually bun it after an hour or two when I'm at my computer designing). It's definitely changed, it's not the frizzy mess that it was before joining LHC!

It's crazy to think how quickly hair can bounce back from being mistreated.

Yes it's definitely the case that people are paying more attention to small changes the less you wear your hair down. Mine is up almost all the time. I sure have pleanty of friends and coworkers who have not seen my hair down even once and then the first time they see the first question i usually get is if in fact suspecting my hair to be at least partly fake because people aren't used to long hair that look like it's never been dyed and hardly has any damage.

It was a vague comment, but not to worry. People say silly things sometimes! While you know exactly what goes into your hair, not many others can appreciate it. I am a beverage manager at a big casino, and I know a lot of the regular guests. The other night, one decided to tell me that my hair was different than the day before, what did I do? I was at a loss. My hair routine was exactly the same for both days...I had no idea. So I just laughed and said, "Well, it proably looks different because I was wearing a collared jacket yesterday!"

Seriously, I still can't figure it out. I think I just laughed it off as a guy making a comment to be nice. Sometimes we want to say something but it just doesn't come out right :foot:

I have to say that I doubt she was thinking it looked shorter! You have lovely hair!

Think nothing of it! Honestly, these things shouldn't even bother you. I think maybe people just want to comment for the sake of commenting. If I let all this stuff bother me... gosh. Not that I get that many comments, but sometimes I do get ones that I don't like. Bigger fish to fry and all. :) But that's just my personal view on it.

Don't let it get to you! :grouphug:

For most people outside the long hair forums a change in hair automatically means either a haircut or a color change, therefore when she noticed your hair is nicer and thought something was different while the color is still the same, then it must be a new haircut... In most cases it would be a reasonable assumption, as the majority of people get haircuts every couple of weeks, but in your case it was a miss as you're trying to grow your hair...
Don't think anything of it, she was just trying to be nice :)

People are weird and unobservant. Last week, my boss had a day of meetings and didn't wear his usual baseball cap. He had a steady stream of people asking "did you cut your hair?" I must have overhead him being asked that at least a dozen times.

They probably saw your hair down and it registered as "head looks different -> haircut?"

I don't think she meant any harm.
