View Full Version : Who wears their hair down most of the time?

I have been really loving my hair and wearing it down 95% of the time since it's a bit cooler. Does anyone notice a difference in damage from wearing your hair down as opposed to up? I haven't yet but just curious as to other's experiences.

I wear my hair down all of the time. I'm pretty good at avoiding damage - I am careful not to sit on my hair, or to step on it.
I find that the biggest problem with wearing hair loose is that loose hair readily collects lint. Lint wraps around the hairs causing tangles. I haven't found a good solution to that. :hmm:

I do, but putting it up at this length causes more damage than leaving it down. Once I'm at a length where i can braid it'll probably change, but not much.
I like my hair down. ^_^

I use my hair down most of the time...when i french braid it i normally cant help doing some damage as i am not good enough yet to avoid pulling some hairs lol i dont know about the weather..but probably dry weather will damage more with loose hair

Well if you haven't by now I doubt I ever will! Being a curly, I only comb my hair with conditioner on it when I wash. If I try when it's dry I find it's really damaging. I am very careful about getting it caught on things and out in the wind I do wear it up.
I wonder if most of the damage people get from wearing it down IS getting it caught on things from not being careful or tangles or what? Thinking in print here. :D

I wear my hair down a lot. It's always down so it can dry on wash day and I usually will wear it down the next day as well. After that, I might switch to a braid.
I'd say my hair is healthy and I don't think my hair has been damaged by this and I'm usually very conscious of it. If it's windy or the weather is bad, I may bun it for a second or just sort of hold onto it and move it to the front and then let it back down when I get inside. I really like updos as well, but they usually end up hurting my scalp at the end of the day.

Yep this is my biggest problem also. In the summer I HAVE to wear it contained because of the heat but I often wear braids instead of updos. The longer it gets the more the updos tend to pull.

Thinking in print here. :DMost people I've talked with also experience tangles after wearing hair loose. The cause of the tangles seems to vary - finer hair will tangle on its own, whereas coarse hair like mine tangles mainly because lint wraps around it.
I need to pull myself away from the board and go to work. :D

I almost always wear mine down, because I like the way it looks and feels. The most I'll do is a ponytail at work, but since work is done for the year my hair will be down every day until spring.

Well now that is just WRONG that work would interfere with your personal time! ;) My hair is neither fine nor coarse really. BUT I do think the curls keep it from tangling as much too. Maybe I'll just have to see. When you come back how can you tell if lint wraps around it? Can you actually SEE the lint? I can't remember that. BUT then mine is only about 2 inches above waist, so maybe more later? Okay hurry and work and come back and answer me LOL.

I wear mine down most of the time. The only problem is tangles.....but my hair just likes being difficult! If it is a particularly windy day, and I am going to be out a lot, I will try to at least tie it back into a low ponytail, because the tangles get severe in the wind.

I tend to get headaches if I try to keep it up all day, except for braids. I haven't noticed too much damage, but I've also never tried putting it up every day for a significant amount of time to compare.

At your length, I wore my hair down most of the time. At this length, I can't. It knots up and gets into everything. Recently I discovered a bun that comfortably stays, so it goes up within 5 minutes of my feet hitting the floor in the morning and stays up all day.

I wear my down a lot.. not most of the time, because I've been lazy about washing and I don't wear it down unless it's first or second-day hair. But more than most people here.
It truly doesn't cause damage for me. My hair is clumped into curls and waves and covered in moiturizing leave-ins, so I don't get tangles. Even when it blows in the wind it doesn't tangle - I do get a halo though. It's only just past bra-strap, and I work all day sitting in an office in a leather chair.. I usually flip it over my shoulders so it doesn't get rubbed. It rarely gets caught or pulled by anything.. can't remember the last time it did.

I tend to wear mine down when it gets colder, keeps my head, ears and neck warm. I don't notice lots of damage from computer and phone work. But when I'm working around the house I put it up so I'm not dragging it through stuff and I usually put it up when I'm driving or carrying equipment to and from gigs.
However, I do find that a big barrette gathering about 3/4 of my hair just below the nape works pretty well at protecting my hair when I carry equipment (keeps it out of straps) but that really only works if we have just one evening gig. I like to show of the length and wurlies when we are working in evening clothes, so this works pretty well.
If I'm carrying equipment in and out of several venues and driving between them it's just better to put the hair up or I'll get it caught and rip the ends.
It's almost constantly up in the summer, we work outside in dusty, windy environments.

I am the same - the only time I ever wear mine down is if it is completely still outside (which is rare for Perth), and even then I have bobby pins in my handbag. I wear it out if I go out in the evening, purely because it looks good, but otherwise it gets in EVERYTHING. I get bad knots, and I find bits of leaf and lint in my hair hahaha. I also get really hot/itchy with it all over my back and face.

I wear my hair down a lot, too. I will pull it back in a bun or braid if I am working outside or doing something that is a danger to my hair health. But, most of the time, it is loose.

Yeah that might be a reason I don't let mine get too long if it starts bothering me to wear it down. What kind of bun?

I'm just now getting to the point of having my hair get into everything, but I have struggled w/ tangles and knots almost from Day One! Mostly on the tips or the neck hairs if I bun it up for bed.
I cannot leave it up for long because my scalp hurts. Thankfully, I do not get headaches w/ it up. I clip the sides up for meals and cooking.
I have large plastic hairpins that work very well to bun it up loosely, and I do that for bed, too.
But mostly, it's down. And into everything! It's thin, fine and flat on top, so I like to clip the sides up on top w/ a barrette, and I have varying success w/ these. They have a silicone sheath that covers the spring mechanism so they don't damage my hair, but sometime during the day they have to come out because they hurt.
I'm just beginning to get the tips caught between my back and the car seat or a high-backed chair. That's annoying, but so far, not damaging. I need to get better at preventing this situation. Should remember to pull the length forward over my shoulder before I sit down.
Jeeze, Louise, I'm beginning to feel like The Princess and the Pea! Everything hurts!

It's really easy and comfortable.
1) gather ponytail, hold with one hand, stick out 2 fingers of hand holding ponytail
2) wind 2 loops around fingers with the other hand
3) immediately after 2nd loop, go down between hand and scalp, under base of ponytail, and wrap remaining hair around ponytail base.
4) find the space between the 2 loops, press one loop right and one loop left
5) use stick or fork down through center of one loop, under base of ponytail, and coming out through the center of the other loop
This is the most comfortable bun I've ever tried, and it stays without sagging or pulling all day. I couldn't do it if my hair were much shorter, though. I only get 2 wraps around the ponytail base.

I never wear my hair down, so I'm not much good to this thread, but I just had to reply to this comment.
I think that this is really something you just get used to. Why? Because if I leave my hair down (aside from the other negatives, like getting it caught and the fact that I HATE hair in my face), I get headaches (metaphorical and physical, hehe). I guess it's just what your scalp is used to.

This seriously is the first time I hear about someone getting headaches with hair down.
I wear my hair down a lot because I always had a huge problem about the weight of my buns. I either can't do them right or they really do pull heavy. And one other thing is that my hair is coarse and it doesn't tangle that easily so why not leave it down. I used to wear it down very easily even with thigh lengthed hair.:)

I wear my hair down all the time. I've thought about this (sad, I know!), but for me, the sheer pleasure I get out of having my hair down (and growing longer) is what I want more than super-long hair. So I've figured that if I grow it very slowly and cut off half off what grows, then the damage won't be too bad.
I have virtually identical hair to you, CurlsGirl - well, not as thick, long or pretty, lol! But it's 2c/3a, my hair is now wurly and for years and years I just blow dried it straight and had a frizzy dry mop. I'm really loving the fact that I think my hair looks prettier as it grows and gets longer, and is allowed to be what it wants to be, so that may be why I want to wear it down?
Hmmmm. Plus, I find it warmer. I find my hair very soothing around my neck and shoulders, and around my face. Very sensuous and part of me. When my hair is up, I feel that I'm more exposed somehow.

Do bear in mind, I've worn it up pretty much all my life :) My mother made me tie it back when I started school, so it was always tied back most of the time, and from the age of about 9 or so (I'm now 15), I just wore it back all the time (ponytail). Certainly I haven't properly worn it down in at least 3 years.

YES! I have way, way, way more damage when I wear my hair down. If I wear it down even once in a while for special occasions I see a very significantly greater amount of splits. My hair got a zillion times healthier when I started permabunning it. I don't know if I just have really fragile hair or what, but that's just my experience.

I wear my hair down nearly every minute of the day. I do pull it into a pony tail when I have to do things like change really bad diapers or clean other toddler/baby/6 yr old bodily accidents.
I have the silliest reason for wearing my hair down too -- seriously it makes me feel like a princess.
My grandmother hates it. I sense jealousy. Possibly not but I do tell myself that every time someone suggests I cut it all off.

When you come back how can you tell if lint wraps around it? Can you actually SEE the lint? When I untangle my hair in bright sunlight shining through the window, I can see pieces of lint as the cause of the tangles.
The lint is invisible in normal lighting. Lint is much smaller in diameter than hair. :)

I wear my hair down and loose most of the time when I start my day. I don't like to blow dry it and if I put it up wet, it will remain wet all day and that makes my scalp itch. So I leave it down at least long enough for it to dry. If I shower in the AM, drying takes all morning, so I don't generally put it up until the afternoon.
After it dries or if I haven't showered, I may choose to wear my hair up if I am going to be busy doing housework or tasks that my hair might get in the way for or if I'm going to be outside where the wind will blow my hair. If I'm at work, it's usually down unless it's dirty. I do put it up if it's dirty.
I'd say my hair is down about 75% of the daytime. I always braid it when I sleep.

I tend to wear my hair up 80-90% of the time. I wear my hair down when its pretty clean and up when it gets a bit oily and doesn't look as good. Although I do have a habit of put it up when going out, just so I don't have to worry about it getting messy, even when clean. It does tangle a lot more when down (I find lints in my tangles too), so I'm sure the friction causing the tangles and untangling it does cause damage, but oh well. What's the point of growing out my hair if I can't wear it down once in awhile!

When my hair is up, I feel that I'm more exposed somehow.
I used to feel like that too (I'm trying to get over it). Things that have helped me wear it up more are fancy hair toys (I have a really pretty beaded flexi-8 and a stunning Graydog hairstick that I got from a swap) and the fact that I always seem to get compliments on my hair when it's up (usually on the fancy-ness of certain updos) than when it's down (other than the, "your hair is getting so LONG!"). :D

I prefer to wear it up if I'm leaving the house and down at home if I'm not doing cleaning chores - unless it's oily and needs a washing that I haven't got the energy for or the assistance in transferring in/out of the tub/shower. (remember - I'm handicapped).
I prefer to sleep with it loose, even though the cats play in it while I sleep (and sometimes wake me from pulling it in play or nesting in it) and I have to carefully de-tangle it in the morning. I just hate all sleep caps & scarves, usually... most especially in warmer months... and pull them off in my sleep. If I braid it for sleep at night, it tangles too badly when I unbraid it to comb it in the morning.
I used to wear it in a pony tail 99% of the time... but lately, since I've found LHC - I finally have mastered a few simple buns and other up-dos! And I've also rediscovered the joys of using all my long-ignored hair toys, plus a few new ones. :D :cheese:

I wear my hair up most of the time, but around the house at night I often let it down. Although I enjoying wearing my hair down, the last few inches of my hair are quite fragile and damaged. They're not too bad, but buns protect the ends from further damage, and help them stay moisturised. If I wore my hair down all the time, the ends would become too damaged and I'd have to trim, which I'd prefer not to do until I get to hip length.
When my hair is universally strong and healthy, and the old dye/heat damage is gone, I might wear it down more frequently - but I *love* wearing my hair up in buns, too.

I prefer my hair down. I do wear it up for work, and have discovered low buns don't give me headaches, and the less apparatus (scrunchies, pins, sticks, ponytail holders) one uses and the looser the updo is, the less it hurts. But I still prefer the look and feeling of loose hair.

I wear my hair down almost all of the time, but I can't say that I can really assess the damage because I haven't left it up long enough for me to notice a difference.
I'm really careful though, I move it out of the way of bag straps and whatnot, and if it's windy I put it up.
I really should try and do more updos.......

Well i am doing the wear hair up for a year challenge and the biggest thing I've noticed is less tangles. So when loose i got more tangles=more splits=even more splits= yuck hair!
Other then that i suppose wearing it down doesn't do as much if you are careful with it not rubbing against things or getting caught in stuff and such!

I wear my hair down most of the time. It is longer now, so when I have any housework or things to do at home that I am busy with, I do put it up to get it out of the way.
I ony wear it up to go out if it needs washing and looks oily but I do not need to wash it as much as I used to, so I can wear it down longer (up to a week) before it looks oily.
I grew it long to enjoy it and I enjoy it most, wearing it down. It is past bsl now but it does not catch on anything and I gently separate it with my fingers if it gets tangled, which is very rare. Catnip keeps it pretty well under control but lately I have been ignoring my hair and I have been stressed so I have been a bit rougher on my hair than usual. That is easily remedied with a thorough s&d.

I find it's important for my sanity to have it up when I'm at work or running errands with my kids. I also like to put it up to cook. (Learned that from 4-H.) I am glad I have to wear it up for work, because it makes me try more styles.
I love updos now because of two changes: I cut bangs in June that I love, and I finally have long enough hair to properly do most buns. Since my hair is so thick, I had to be at waist length to make most updos work for me. When I feel like enjoying my hair, I can wear it down and enjoy it, and when I don't I have a lot more options then I used to.
I also found that by avoiding haircuts for seven months, my ends are more uneven which helps my buns stay put. (I have straight, slippery hair.)
As I side note, I do get more complements when it's down. I like to wear it up all day at work/errands/housework, then go out with bunwaves. Since I've never had wavy hair--I feel so pretty!!

I wear my hair up most of the time. When it's down there are usually one of three reasons at work: My hair is drying after a wash, there's some mystical occasion where I feel like having it down for a while (event or whatnot), and combing it out prior to restyling it. Like EdG lint is an awfully frustrating thing I run into way more than I wish I did. That's a definite detractor in addition to my frazzled ends tangling up or the curls (which are separated since I comb my hair) that wrap around themselves and other hairs in odd ways. If wearing my hair down was easy to deal with at the end of the day it's possible I could do it more. I guess it's a good thing I find styles pretty fun!

I do too. I'm lazy. I french or do two dutch braids once or twice a week. I used to do more buns, but lately I'm been going to a lot of parties and situations where buns might fall out or just look too...old? boring? Plus I like the funness of having something to play with and flip around. I don't wear my hair up enough to notice more or less damage either way, but I'm sure I get more damage down. My hair tangles very quickly, esp in the areas where I have incredibly damaged bleached streaks. I also recently discovered feather extensions(I'm thinking about starting a thread on em, since I don't think we have one yet) and its tough to fit feathers into most buns, but its pretty easy to have them sticking out of a braid.

Me.
For me, I don't see the point in even having hair if I were to wear it up all the time.
I go through phases where I love trying new updos, or I'll wear them every day for a few weeks. I also understand having hair be something special, that you take care of just for yourself. But like you, scorpio_rising, I love long hair for the feeling of having it surrounding me all the time. As it gets longer though, I'll probably wear more braids to keep it contained and more protected.

I go through phases of wearing it down everyday. I have never noticed an increase in damage during those periods.

I've been wearing it down much too often these days :o Funny, because I feel that I look better with my hair up. However, I enjoy the feeling of it down, and it's easier (at this length anyways) to tuck it under a hat/hood when it's not in a bun.
Half-ups don't count, do they?

Honey39,.. you are so right about how your hair comforts you. I feel the exact same way. My hair never feels heavy or too hot, it actually keeps the sun off my back. It's soothing to feel it on my back as if it's protecting me, and hugging me. As someone else said, I cannot imagine myself without long hair. I wonder what that really means...and says about me?

I wear it down most of the time..Only when the weather is bad i do a ponytail and working out maked me put it up high. Else its get so sweaty.
Last summer it was already really hot with my hair down, it was not even waist length then so i'm curious about the feeling i'll have this year with (hopefully) tailbone lenght .
I only experience damage loose if my hair get caught in the handle of my bag..

I almost always wear my hair down. In fact, it's only since coming to these boards a couple weeks ago that I've started trying to wear my hair up, in order to combat breakage. I honestly had no idea that wearing it down caused breakage - I just assumed my hair's terminal length was BSL and it'd never grown any longer no matter what.
That said, I really prefer my hair down. My hair is pretty curly, and I don't get that lovely sweep of sleek hair back to the bun that people with straight hair get when it's up. My hair looks poufy and fuzzy up, and I feel frowzy like that. I like the sex appeal of it when it's down. I'm trying to make my peace with the up-do, but it's been a little hard.

I wear my hair down most of the time. For a long time, I used to wear my hair in a ponytail or a bun most of the time (I took dance classes for many years). And I don't see more damage for wearing it down. But I always get sure not to trap my hair into the zipper. I just want to add that when I wear my hair up frequently my hair is weaker (I mean I loss more hair).

I wear my hair down quite a bit. Since it's not very long yet I don't worry too much about damaging it, but as it gets longer I'll be adjusting the percentage of time I wear it up accordingly. I'm one of those types that just enjoys the feel of hair on my back and shoulders. :)
