View Full Version : Less orange henna? help!

I did full-head henna in a shade called red-brown on my bleached and chemically dyed ash-blonde hair. My roots ended up quite dark brownish red, but my lengths, which were bleached ended up very yellow'y orange red, and I don't like it all that much. My root colour is definitely closer to what I wanted.

I bought cassia after because I also don't want my hair to go too dark (which it has done previous times I've done henna). But now I'm thinking I should try amla to tone down the orange of my lengths?

My problem:
I want my hair to be more of a natural dark brown/red but not so dark that I would add indigo, I just don't want it yellow ginger.
So not too dark, not too orange, not too bright red. What should I do? Should I stick with just henna and it will darken even my lengths after more applications, or should I add cassia or amla or both? Or something else entirely?

My hair is naturally dark ash-blonde.

Just do another treatment with henna, pure BAQ henna (no indigo on bleach, please (will turn green)).
Avoid your roots!

Thank you. I'm trying this first, and then maybe I will do amla mix later if I'm not happy with the result.

Indigo doesn't mean that your hair will immediately go black or something. Mixed with henna it produces a warm rich brown. Check out Habioku https://www.google.sk/search?q=habioku&oq=habioku&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i65j69i60l3j69i61.2759j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 .

Several layers of pure henna will just make it go more red in my opinion and sounds like what you want is basically auburn.

I did the red-brown henna again, trying to avoid my roots. I didn't let it dye release and I added a little bit of cassia and mixed it with a bit cooled down boiled water (in my experience this makes it less orange) and some lemon juice. I had it in for about 1 1/2hrs, the last ten minutes I put the rest of the henna on my roots.
It's definitely a bit darker, but still bright orange, and I can see the bleach blonde when it's in light. Of course it hasn't had time to oxidise yet so hopefully the brightness will settle a bit.

I'm still wondering about amla. I've been reading about henna/amla and cassia/amla mix, but can't find much. Amla will make the henna dye more natural auburn-red I assume?

The brown is very pretty, but I don't want to add indigo because I did it once before and I don't want that dark hair, neither that brown. When my lengths are an okay colour I will only do my roots.

This is my hair now (before oxidation and in quite dark lightning, still wet)

I think it looks *great* now. Time to keep your mitts off. ;) I wouldn't mess with it too much anymore if I were you. Give the dye time to settle and oxidize and let it breathe a little before you decide to use the amla. I don't think you need it, but that's me. ;)

This! Leave it alone now!

It will get less orange in about 3 days.

It's been 5 days since henna now, and the orange has oxidised to a more natural Weasley-ginger colour, which is fine by me. I'll do roots only now, and if I tire I'll try amla, but for now I'm happy with the result.

Here is 1, pre-henna (lengths are yellow due to henna underneath bleach), chemically dyed ash-blonde and 2, result after two full-head henna in red-brown shade, second time with a little cassia in the mix.

Thank you!
In sunny weather (even indirect sunlight) I still think it's a bit bright, but I guess it's because of bleach underneath.

It looks so pretty! Are you still doing the henna now? My natural color seems to be pretty similar to yours, and I'd love to go back to red after using box dyes. It's nice to know I'll probably get good results when I take the plunge :)

You seem to be in a pretty good place, color-wise.
