View Full Version : Hair action shot in X-Men: Apocalypse

A hair action shot in one of the promotional photos caught my attention. I was surprised. It is rare to see any long hair in popular culture.

The filmmakers clearly expect the audience to suspend disbelief that a comic-book character would be fighting evil while her loose hair is flying around.
I thought I would post a link for the LHC. :cheese:

It looks like they are keeping Psylocke's character as close to comic book. That's how she looked when she first appeared in the comics. Her outfit is even more ridiculous. She's basically wearing a bathing suit. They are styling the characters according to how they looked in the 80s when the story takes place. Even Storm is sporting the short Mohawk from that era.

I read X-Men back in high school and the Apocalypse storyline is one of my favorites. After the train wreck that was The Last Stand I am very nervous every about this one.

This (http://static1.comicvine.com/uploads/scale_small/0/170/76397-82924-psylocke.jpg) is what she looked like when she first joined the X-men. She gets pants (kind of) but that costume is so '80s it hurts. (As opposed to Jubilee's costume, which is so '80s it's awesome.)

They retconned Last Stand in Days of Future Past, and basically pretended the abomination that was Wolverine: Origins never happened. Comics!

Anyway, female superheroes running around with long hair (long by normal people standards, not LHC standards; most of them are around BSL) worn loose is pretty standard in comics, so the movies based on those comics reflect that. See also: Scarlet Witch in Age of Ultron, Black Widow in CA2 and Iron Man 2, Storm's atrocious wig in the first X-Men movie...those are the only ones I can think of because not enough of the female characters have been adapted to live action, but it's also pretty standard for action shows and movies in general, to have women fighting with loose BSL hair.

I stand corrected.

I saw DOFP. It still doesn't excuse what they did.

Back on topic: long hair and capes are par for the course in comics. It doesn't matter how handicapping they may be in an actual fight. Elektra's in the second movie was hip length. You also can't forget Lara Croft. She really is a long hair! And the Angelina Jolie version had her at classic length. She started as a video game, but has her own comics too. She is also the only one who contained her hair. Granted not buns, but braids are better than flowing locks. And then there is the silliness that is Charlie's Angels. Especially the second movie where the hair had its own action sequences. I know not a comic book, but those hair action shots have to be acknowledged.

They're all silly entertainment. Once I looked up Wonder Woman. It was hilarious to see they thought this was a way to create a modern woman hero. How is it possible to use just bracelets, a small surface area to protect the entire body from bullets? Even if the bracelets omitted some sort of invisible body shield once activated it would make more sense. I just hope the weather is good with all those swimsuit type costumes or the heroes are immune to cold weather, lol.

The writers certainly don't let practicality get in the way.

I believe Laura Croft's braid was more a result of the limitations of video game hardware in the 1990s, rather than the need to protect long hair. ;)

Oh I know, it was terrible. But, I have read enough comics to ignore stupid and terrible storylines, and pretend they never happened, even if they were never retconned out (*cough* One More Day *cough*).

No Capes!

And let's not forget Thor's hair.

Probably, but they still kept it in the first movie, when they didn't have to. They certainly took some liberties with her hairstyle in the second movie; a classic-length ponytail does keep your hair off your neck and somewhat out of your face, but otherwise it might as well be loose.

I'd like to add that anime has some ridiculous long hair warriors and heroes. There's sword fights, some with serious injuries but yet no one gets an instant sword hair cut. They don't trip over their hair either. Many have hair that defies gravity

Probably.

But at least in the movie they had her "kinda" handling her hair correctly. I say kinda because sleeping with loose hair that doesn't tangle and let's you just out of bed with a weapon is beyond rediculous. Were those silk sheets? Oh! Let's not forget the hair flip in the shower!

The things you mentioned are the reasons why my actively fighting characters either have short hair or wear it in a braid/bun/similar thing... it's not even good-looking sometimes, but it's practical. Regarding the action shot... silly, but still awesome. And that's also my view on those films quite often.
Still thanks for sharing this and reminding me that we have something to do this week :)

I have been told to never watch legend of the seeker from the die hard Sword of Truth fan who was lending me the books in the series. And also that all novels in the series past Confessor need to be banished from this earth. I tried reading Omen Machine and am inclined to believe the previous claim after agreeing with the later. Awesome hair shot though, maybe I'll watch it just for the hair lol

This tickled my pickle too funny. And ladies lets not Corbett one important lesson learned from Helen Magnus in sanctuary hair stuck in lip gloss is so not super hero. So when fighting the bad guys put your hair up.
