View Full Version : I could not afford one, so I made one :D (Ficcare)

I've heard (and read) lots of things about ficcares, and how they hold one's hair in place, but i could never afford one (or at least the "you spent HOW much on *that* ?!?!?" lecture from my wife... :( ) So after some bathroom renovation left me with several pieces of old copper pipe... I decided to make my own (as far as i can tell it is the ~large size from the measurements), i am currently using a flat spring out of an old clothespin, hoping to upgrade to a coil spring from a mousetrap (slightly stronger, even though the current one holds fine)
planned improvements are - proper hinge pin (no drill bit), and make the back part a bit narrower (sometimes it's a bit troublesome to get to fit)

and some pics :) (including a couple of it in action ;)
Edit: a making of video series is here - (completed) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFtA5BxDkGASIrVqRN_XuhmyO6pZJwFmE

(Adding here too so you don't have to go to the end of the thread :)

Hey, that's pretty cool, especially with the flat spring! Does it have a good grip? The stiffness and grip of Ficcares is a large part of why they work so well for people.

(Ficcare, take note! Some of us like copper color!)

Thanks :) it holds fairly well, once i get everything mooshed around (seems to work better with flat-ish buns), at least i can jump/run around and it doesn't fall out (unlike the 2-prong forks i've been using)...

yeah, i noticed a distinct lack of copper-colored ficcares during my research... wonder why they don't make 'em that color?

Jeez, you are clever!!! That is awesome! If Ficcare don't start producing copper clips, you could have a new income producer :) That looks amazing in your hair and suits you so well!

If you do this again or change a spring, like you planned to, I hope you can take pictures/notes/video of the process, pretty please? :flower: By the way, if you are interested, we have a DIY Modding a Ficcare thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=117234) and an awesome Self-made hairtoy thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=131) on the LHC, and crafty LHCers would probably love your expertise! :D
Those are some incredible skills you've got! :bowtome: Congrats! :D

Also a lover of copper. If ficcare made one in that color I'd be all over it, crazy international shipping prices be damned -hinthintnudgenudge- ahem. Mad skills me_random!

edit: even better an etsy shop of your own creations! But would that be a problem with patents? Do you guys think ficcare would make a big stink about it?

I also love the copper! Every now and then, I'll end up just staring at a spring or hinge wondering how to turn it into a clip. Thank you in advance for your video!

ok, i've started a video series (from start to finish) of the construction of v2 :) (smaller, lighter, and with coil spring instead of flat spring)

That is so awesome!
I looked at your first video, and
1) it totally looks like something I could do! I'm thinking about digging around in the shop, because I'm pretty sure we have all the stuff laying around here.
2) did you film in our shop? -just teasing. But our shop looks very similiar, except with car parts everywhere!
