View Full Version : Evil Bangs

Originally when I gave myself bangs, they were just meant to be blunt and straight across my forehead. But, courtesy of a lovely cowlick on my left temple, they turned into sideswept, which I actually started liking - and that's exactly how they've always been...until today. I don't know what changed, but suddenly, they're back to that blunt, straight across lookand I'm not very pleased. I liked my sideswept bangs and no matter what I do, my hair refuses to go back to that shape.
So, here's what I've tried so far with no luck:
I've washed and dried my bangs three different times now. I used medium heat first as that's what I typically use to dry my bangs, but after that didn't do anything, I tried high and that did nothing but burn my forehead.
I pinned them back hoping that would "train" them back into their position and that only made them stick up.
I've even used a curling iron.
I haven't done anything to change my routine or style my hair any differently. I haven't even trimmed my bangs and trust me, they definitely need it.
So, why is this happening? Is it possible to have a cowlick and then lose it?

I would just use a hair straightener to retrain them to go the way you want them to. Good luck! :o

I'm just of the opinion that bangs are generally evil. They have the uncanny ability to look greasy while my forehead is flaking from dryness, for example. If they can mess with you, they will!

Trim them and see if something in the length is messing with the cowlick.
Trim them into side swept bangs and put down the heat.
The Naughty Mess says, "HAHAHAHA hot things never work that's so cute."
.....No one asked you, we are talking about normal hair not evil hair monsters. Go eat a claw clip please.

Given it is one day I'd see what happens over the next few days.
I have several cowlicks. Two right in the bang area (yay me ). I can tell you at times the main front me that is almost right in the center likes to pretend to hide. Then a few days later pops back up. I'm not really sure why. I would blow dry the hair in the opposite direction of the cowlick. I'm willing to bet the next time you wash it wil pop back into place.
Don't do anything drastic. Give it a few days.
And I agree bangs are evil! They can change your look, even add a youthful look but living in a windy area there's no way I'd make that mistake again. Despite the evil at times I miss the forehead cover.

Every time you trim bangs, you may be possibly changing the...dynamic...of the hairs. I trim short, blunt, full bangs on myself (and have for over a decade) and if I am not careful to consider the way the hairs in the layers closest to my forehead have been trimmed versus the top layers (if that makes sense!) then I can end up with a completely different shape. What can also mess with the shape of my bangs and hair is the way I comb my hair after a wash. Hope you figure out what's plaguing your bangs!!!!

Trim them... mine stops behaving when they're too long.

Is today especially humid or unusually dry? My hair tends to act differently depending on how much moisture is in the air.
Before you hack it off or anything though, I'd leave it for a few days and see if it starts behaving again (and pin it in the meantime).

I agree with everyone saying to trim them, mine get super evil when they're not that "perfect length". They're temperamental little things...

I find that roundbrush+medium or low heat (actually the ammount of heat does nothing but dry hair faster ime) does best.
Roundbrush in streight downwards motion = blunt bangs on forehead
Roundbrush in streight downwards motion AND THEN upwards and sideways = side swept bangs with ends pointing out.
For ends pointing in, I would do roundbrush down and then down and sideways.
Flat iron makes them too rigid and blunt if this makes any sense. I have to curl the ends ever so slightly to have a more natural look. But they move nicer with roundbrush.
I hope I am making sense here.

Either they do need a trim, or you've changed something in your product use, possibly?
Or, you trimmed differently?
Maybe grow them out. That'll be the end of it.
I haven't had a cowlick behave differently in all my life. ;)

No need to fear the hair straightener on bangs only! I use it all the time on mine, in fact you can even use it to curl the bangs in the direction you want them to go-- there are yutube vids on how to use a straightener to curl hair... practice makes perfect. I don't use a straightener on my whole head, just the bangs with a little hairspray to hold them in place.
Are you trying to grow them out now? If so, please don't cut them. You could use a small claw clip to hold them up and back off your face, Snookie style--use some hairspray to hold them up and away from your face brushed into a half up.
If you want to keep having bangs, then maybe the trimming bangs suggestion below will help, being careful to not trim too short. That is a fatal decision if you cut too short, imo.

Bangs are evil! xD I had bangs for years and they caused me so much trouble that I finally decided to grow them out. It seems like there was a certain length of side swept bangs that I loved and thought were cute, and I miss those, though I just could never keep them that way; they constantly were changing their mind. It was especially hard with my curl patterns, texture, and hair growth. I notice that my hair is never consistent in how it grows out in texture. I was looking at some of my shed hairs once, and I was amazed at how there was inconsistency in both texture and color throughout the whole entire length of the hair (for example: at the root the hair was lighter, in the middle much darker, then lighter nearer the ends, and then dark at the tips, which made no sense, and I have never used dyes of any sort, and other hairs had weird colors and consistencies like that). I don't know if it is normal or not, though I think sometimes hair does decide to grow out funky too sometimes for whatever reason (maybe it was relating to hormones for me). You probably don't have this problem, though thought I'd mention it. :) Like others suggested, I think that trying and trimming again might be a good idea to see if that helps. I hope you are able to tame your bangs!

I guess it all depends on whether you want to grow out your bangs or not. I am currently growing out some wispy bangs ...I just cut back into my hairline only a half inch or so but you would think I cut back to the center of my crown area. I am drying them now by pulling them over to the side and them back around my fingers.... then I am BBB brushing them back into my longer hairs. I wish I had not cut them in a couple of weeks ago, but I was lured by several long hairs in photos who look so pretty with wispy bangs.... oh well.. no sense crying over spilled milk. Drying them while twisting and stretching them over your fingers and pulling up and away from your face really does help for them to stay backwards if you want to grow them out. It does depend on how far back into your hairline they are cut.... If they don't stay back, then drying them with a blow dryer and then using a straightener to bring them over to the side will be a solution.
Good luck... to me too! I am growing mine out ... again! ugh....:couch:

I don't know if you can lose a cowlick, but you may have slept on it wrong or said something to them that make them flip out ;) bangs are soo frustraiting, but we keep trying..
if they need that trim, that might be all it is. Try that, and if they're determined, maybe learn to like them straight?

I can sympathize, I've had bangs forever and they are evil. Mine only behave when I hit them with the curling iron, otherwise they form stupid looking "horns" on each side of my eyeglasses. I'm in the process of weaning off of them and growing them out, at least most of them anyway. I may have to keep a thin fringe just due to how I look without any bang at all. Overall, I am so sick of them though, and really detest them.

Instead of hating on your bangs, use them as a practice tool for when you reach longer lengths. I practice braiding on them and I think it has helped me cope with the shortness of the rest of my hair.

Yep. And with a cowlick, a very stubborn middle part + wurly hair Ive completely given up on them. Getting them is doomed to fail from the start.
How did it go, OP?

I love my bangs, but it took a while to train them and train my hairdresser to do them!
I have something going on with my hair which means I have more bounce on one side so she has to cut them on a slant so that they look even.
If my hair needs washing and when its in need of trimming you can sometimes see the slantedness, so I have to blow dry with a round brush to get them to fall how I want them to.
I've tried straighteners but I usually make more of a mess.
I know it's a bit different because you don't want yours blunt but just to sympathise about awkward bangs :)

Well, it's good to know it isn't just me and that bangs genuinely are evil, evil little monsters.
I have since trimmed my bangs because, quite frankly, I couldn't see anymore and that seemed to upset them even more. Right now, our weather is a bit crazy, so my hair is on the extra-fluffy side, which might be another reason my bangs are deciding to take charge of my face.
If I owned a straightener, I would definitely give that a try, but the closest I have is a crimper from the '90's...and that's definitely not the look I'm going for, so it's out as an option.
A few have recommended I just grow them out, which I have considered in the past, but the funny thing is that having bangs actually makes me look like an adult. Without bangs, I can pass for a teenager and that's not necessarily a good thing when you're in your late 20's and trying to get a date...
Here's hoping the little demons start behaving themselves!
